We are seeking new trustees to help us bring greater awareness around harms caused by gambling, and greater support to the voices and knowledge of those who have Lived Experience of such harms.
As a registered charity these are unpaid positions yet the carry such important significance in helping raise the profile and impact of GLEN as a network for promoting the power of Lived Experience.
Literally millions of UK citizens experience harm each and every year due to either their own gambling or the harmful gambling of someone close to them. With new forms of gambling, many of which are not even recognised or regulated as being gambling, and new gambling products and markets arriving monthly, it is vitally important that the knowledge and understanding deriving from experiential learning is harnessed as fully as possible in order to help create a future society where individuals and families are spared the heartache and pain of gambling related harms.
As a GLEN trustee you will be able to help us ensure that we are on the right path to achieving this difficult goal.
All we ask is a few hours of your time each month, attendance at five board meetings during the year, and a shared commitment to our vision of making the UK a safe and harm adverse nation, a place where people can receive non-stigmatic support and respect for the harms they may have experienced due to gambling.

Job Role
We currently have three trustee vacancies. We are looking for people who would like to make a difference by improving the lives of vulnerable older people living in unfit, inaccessible housing that doesn’t meet their needs. We are especially interested in attracting people with knowledge and/or experience in one or more of the following: Health and/or Social care sectors, accountancy, employment or charity law, fundraising, cyber security, housing decarbonisation. What does becoming a trustee involve?
As part of the trustee role, you will be expected to:
- Attend, and prepare for, a minimum of six meetings per year.

PURPOSE OF ROLE
The Board of Trustees are entrusted to further the work of the Trust in accordance with its charitable objectives and to act as champions for the charity in the public arena.
The Board is responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of the charity, its financial health, the probity of its activities and developing the organisation’s aims, objectives and goals in accordance with the governing document, legal and regulatory guidelines, and its funding bodies, including lenders and investors’ covenants.
Trustees are Directors of The Whiteley Homes Trust, a Company limited by guarantee and governed by company law. Ultimately the Board is responsible for ensuring that the Trust is an effective business – efficient, making best use of its resources and treating all with whom it engages fairly.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Working with other Trustees, ensure that The Whiteley Homes Trust has a clear strategic direction, setting overall policy, defining goals, setting targets and evaluating outcomes against agreed targets.
- Provide constructive challenge to facilitate the achievement of strategic objectives, holding the Leadership Team to account for the delivery of The Whiteley Homes Trust’s goals and strategy.
- Establish a constructive and working relationship with, and provide support to, the Trust’s Chief Executive and the broader Leadership Team (LT).
- Ensure the sound financial health of the charity, and that systems are in place to ensure financial accountability and control.
- Ensure that The Whiteley Homes Trust’s finances, assets and reputation are maintained and protected and not placed at undue risk.
- Ensure that The Whiteley Homes Trust complies with its Memorandum and Articles of Association, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations.

We ask all trustees to commit to the following:

All trustees are expected to attend quarterly Board meetings and a trustee away day once a year. These are held during the working day, online or in person and involve approximately 2 hours in the meeting as well as preparation time.

If you are a first-time trustee, we will offer you a mentor to work alongside you as you settle into the role. On an ongoing basis, we provide trustee training on relevant governance topics.

Terms
Appointments are for an initial 3-year term, and trustees can serve for a maximum of 2 terms.
This is a voluntary role, but reasonable expenses can be claimed.

Who they are
Eastbourne Foodbank is a locally based charity dedicated to providing emergency food, toiletries, and baby equipment to individuals experiencing deep poverty and destitution. The organisation also operates an in-house Financial Inclusion team that offers specialist debt and money advice to its clients. This team recovers approximately £1 million annually for clients, effectively helping many to move beyond the need for foodbank support.
In 2024, Eastbourne Foodbank distributed more than 22,000 emergency food parcels, with over one-third of these allocated to children.
The role
Key tasks

Provide strategic oversight of Eastbourne Foodbank’s finances.

Chair the finance sub-committee, which meets approximately three times per year.

Ensure the foodbank maintains robust systems for budgeting, financial control, insurance, and reporting.

Keep the trustee board fully informed on the organisation’s financial position, overseeing all financial reports submitted to the board to ensure clarity and transparency.

Guarantee that financial reports are comprehensible, properly discussed at trustee board meetings, submitted in the appropriate format and on time as required by the Charity Commission for England and Wales, and presented annually at the AGM.

Following a review of our Board, we are looking for people who are committed to developing our services to the population of Derby City, South Derbyshire, East Staffordshire, Tamworth and surrounding areas. We are specifically looking for people with a finance, HR or legal background. Applications from women and individuals from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds are encouraged.
That is not the only criteria as the main element we are looking for is a passion to help us improve the lives of the people that we serve.
Practical Considerations
Evening Board Trustee meetings are held approximately every 12 weeks. We also hold sub-committees every 12 weeks. The total time commitment for a Trustee is at least 1 day per month; induction and training are provided, as is support from an experienced and knowledgeable Trustee and staff team. Trustees are not paid, but expenses are covered. A DBS (criminal records check) will be required.

Trustee Vacancy
Care Ashore is a charity with a long and proud history. Since the 1920s Care Ashore has offered living accommodation, respite breaks and support to seafarers in need. Uniquely situated on a 260-acre estate in Surrey, Care Ashore provides accommodation for Merchant Seafarers and former members of the Royal Navy, RFA, Fishing Fleets and others with a maritime link, and their dependants.
With around 60 current beneficiary residents, the charity offers accommodation in purpose-built properties. The support provided to beneficiaries is funded by both rent and the commercial activities of the estate which include fishing, camping, a social club and clay pigeon shooting, making it a unique and exciting place to be part of.
Following an ambitious commitment from the trustees to invest in the accommodation and services provided, Care Ashore is at the start of an exciting journey with the creation of a new Strategic Plan, to ensure fit for purposes accommodation and services are delivered to our beneficiaries and facility users.
The current Board has a mix of backgrounds and experience but wishes to strengthen the diversity further to ensure the needs of those they serve, along with the wider community are met. There are currently 3 board vacancies and ideal candidates will bring to the board experience in one or more of the following areas:

Trustees play a vital role in ensuring Airdrie Foodbank meets its core purpose by overseeing the management and administration of the charity and ensuring that the foodbank has a clear strategy in line with our vision and goals.
What will you be doing?
Trustees have collective responsibility for the governance of the organisation and for all decisions made by the Board. They set the strategic direction for the organisation, ensuring alignment to our values, and are responsible for setting organisational policy, defining goals, agreeing the financial plan, evaluating performance, and ensuring that strong relationships are maintained between the Trustees and the Management & Volunteer Team.
Key tasks:
- To manage the charity’s resources responsibly, including ensuring the charity’s assets are used only to carry out its purpose, avoid undue risk and not over-commit the charity.
- To ensure the board regularly reviews its structures, roles, relationship to staff and implementing changes if and when necessary.
- To develop a long-term strategy for the food bank with clear objectives which can be monitored and adapted.
- To work alongside the Treasurer and the board to ensure the organisation’s financial dealings are systematically accounted for and on time, independently examined (on income over £25k) and made publicly available when necessary.
- To ensure the charity is accountable, actively complying with statutory accounting and reporting requirements and the law.
- To ensure appropriate financial plans are in place for future budget allocations as well as looking after contractual agreements with external partners that award money for core costs and additional projects.
- To help promote the organisation to a wide audience of potential funders and beneficiaries and community stakeholders.
- To ensure the food bank has appropriate procedures to: comply with current legislation and good practice; including employment, health and safety, equal opportunities, safeguarding & GDPR compliance/data protection etc.
- To act with reasonable care and skill, giving your time, thought and energy to your role.
- To prepare for and regularly attend and participate in board and subcommittee meetings and any trustee away days.
- To provide ad hoc support to the staff team and volunteers from time to time.
- To act at all times in accordance with the foodbank’s trustee code of conduct.
Trustees may also undertake additional work for the charity between meetings subject to their availability and skill set.

We are looking for people who want to help their local community and work towards the eradication of food poverty whilst support the food bank to continue to provide emergency food to people who find themselves in crisis. Our ideal candidates would demonstrate:

The Vacancy
We are excited to announce that we are looking to appoint a new Trustee Treasurer to our well-established Board.
This vacancy has arisen as our existing Treasurer is progressing to a new position within the Charity Board and we are, therefore, seeking the ideal candidate to fill this position.
As our Treasurer, in addition to the general responsibilities of a trustee, your role will be to maintain an overview of the organisation’s financial affairs to ensure its financial viability, keeping the Board informed about its financial duties and responsibilities, and ensuring that proper financial records and procedures are implemented and maintained by the executive.
You’ll also build a strong relationship with our Finance Director, supporting in providing guidance as required.
The Treasurer provides invaluable support not only to our main Charity Board but also as the Chair of the Finance and Risk committee.
Qualifications/Experience:
Proven experience of operating at a Strategic Level, ideally as a Finance Director or similar.
Charity finance experience or understanding advantageous but not essential.
Application of sound judgement and collaboration with others is key to the success of this role.
Terms of office
- Trustees are appointed for a three-year term of office, renewal for one further term to a maximum of six years.
- This is a voluntary position, but reasonable expenses are reimbursed.
Time commitment
- Attending four Board meetings annually.
- Attending annual strategy and training days.
Committee membership
You will be required to attend two other committees in addition to the mainboard. This will require attendance at an additional 8 meetings annually.
