Volunteer Roles in Bristol
About Us
Mind in Salford is an independent, user focused charity providing vital services that make a positive difference to the wellbeing and mental health of local people.
We represent the voice of Salford in campaigning to dispel stigma and influence political, social and cultural change around mental health. We are passionate about promoting positive mental health and are committed to supporting local people living with mental health problems to get both support and respect.
We are particularly proud of the brilliant work we have done in recent years, especially continuing to provide outstanding advocacy and support throughout the Global Pandemic, and improving psychological wellbeing within the LGBTQ+ community through our innovative Radical Self-Care programme with Rainbow Mind.
We are delighted to be inviting applications for a Treasurer. This is an exciting time for Mind in Salford, as we have just recruited our new Chair of the Board and are preparing to launch a brand-new strategic plan that will focus on how we can have an even greater impact on the local community through our services and campaigns.
As Treasurer, you will join a dedicated Board of experienced and passionate people, shaping our vision in partnership with a talented Senior Leadership Team. We are looking for someone who is not only committed to volunteering their time and expertise to support our work, but that believes in our mission and shares our values.
Key Responsibilities:
· Support the Board in its oversight of finances and finance strategy.
· Collaborate closely with the CEO and senior leaders to ensure effective financial management.
· Chair the Finance Committee, ensuring effective reporting to the Board and that action points are monitored and taken forward.
· Monitor and report on the financial health of the organisation.
· Lead with inclusive values, ensuring a high-performing Trustee Board and Senior Leadership Team.
Who are we looking for?
· Experience in managing and overseeing the financial management of an organisation, ideally involving substantial budgets/turnover of £1m+.
· Able to demonstrate knowledge of good practice in charity finance.
· Experience working with or as part of a Board of Trustees or its sub-committees.
· Ability to lead with inclusive values, whilst providing challenge, support and feedback to ensure a high-performing Trustee Board and Senior Leadership Team.
Our Commitment to Diversifying our Board
In order for us to be able to help more people in Salford struggling with their mental health and wellbeing to get the support and respect they deserve, we need to continue to innovate and ensure an inclusive approach to everything that we do. This means having a commitment to supporting a diverse and inclusive Trustee Board.
The ACEVO and Voice for Change Home Truths report in 2020 highlighted a significant lack of representation of Black and Asian individuals in senior roles within the charity sector and the huge lack of opportunity for Black and Asian individuals to begin, develop and succeed in their careers in the sector, including as trustees. We would therefore particularly welcome applications from Black and Asian candidates, as well as those with lived experience of mental health problems.
We are committed to ensuring that people with a diverse range of skills and experience are encouraged to apply and contribute fully as trustees. We will strive to remove the barriers that prevent people from applying to become trustees and ensure that our application and selection processes are inclusive of and accessible to people with a wide range of skills and lived experience.

Wells Cathedral Chapter is seeking a colleague as Chapter Member and Chair of the Finance Committee to join them and the wider team in developing the Cathedral’s life as a place of worship and service, a heritage site of remarkable beauty, and a globally recognised destination for pilgrims and visitors.
Applications close at: 9 a.m. Monday 10th June 2024.
Location: Wells Cathedral Offices, BA5 2UE
About the City of Wells
Situated on the edge of the Mendip Hills in the County of Somerset, Wells is one of England’s most beautiful and compact cities. Built around the beautiful Cathedral of St Andrew, its picturesque surroundings include a charming market square and high street, the Bishop’s Palace, and the magnificent Vicars’ Close, Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited street.
About Wells Cathedral
Wells Cathedral deservedly has gained an enviable reputation for its lovingly maintained gothic architecture, world-class music, and its ministry. Underpinning the life, worship, and ministry of the Cathedral is a diverse organisation where a lot is achieved with modest resources. It oversees a diverse tapestry of activity:
- A world-class music foundation
- A works and estates department
- A team of virgers
- The Cathedral library and archives
- An education, learning, and outreach programme
- Finance, HR, and administrative functions
- Volunteer management
- Trading companies
About the role
The Chapter body is the custodian of the Cathedral and its precincts, and we are dedicated to the care and conservation of these wonderful assets, so they may enrich lives for centuries to come.
As a non-executive member of Chapter and trustee, your role will be critical to the leadership of the Cathedral.
As a member of Cathedral Chapter, the Chair of the Finance Committee will work strategically to support Chapter in ensuring good financial oversight and will work closely with the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Finance Officer to enable the effective financial management of the Cathedral. This will include developing a financial plan to align with any revised strategy, overseeing effective governance, budget planning, information management and reporting. In addition, this role has oversight of the Cathedral’s investment portfolio.
The Chapter is the Board of Trustees for the Cathedral, a registered charity, and has the ultimate responsibility for directing and overseeing its affairs – as a place of worship and a community of service, as a significant building and a heritage site of remarkable beauty, as a venue for events and as a globally recognised destination for pilgrims and visitors.
Members of Chapter come from a variety of backgrounds and seek to work collegially in their leadership and responsibilities as they take forward the ministry and mission of a Cathedral which has been servicing Wells and the County of Somerset for almost 850 years.
The objects of the Chapter are:
a) to advance the Christian religion in accordance with the faith and practice of the Church of England, in particular by furthering the mission of the Church of England;
b) to care for and conserve the fabric and structure of the Cathedral Church building;
c) to advance any other charitable purposes which are ancillary to the furtherance of the purpose referred to in sub-paragraph (a) or (b).
Who we are looking for
With considerable background in finance as either an executive leader or leader of a specialist finance function, the next Chair of the Finance Committee and Chapter Member will be committed to working with the other members of Chapter as they develop the strategy and plans to bring the mission and vision of the Cathedral to life.
They will understand the role of good governance and shared leadership in a complex organisation and will be able to contribute to the wider agenda of the Cathedral as well as lead on finance.
They will have wisdom and kindness in their leadership and enjoy motivating and developing the team around them. People from all areas of the organisation will find them approachable as they stretch thinking and share ideas.
They will be committed to learning and growing with other members of Chapter and personally as the Cathedral develops into its newly established charity status.
The ability to untangle complex figures and interpret them to others who may not be financially minded is key in this role. A strong financial background is essential, together with the ability to challenge and assimilate views to operate collegially whilst being mindful of the Cathedral environment and governance requirements.
Non-executive members of Chapter will be communicant members of the Church of England, or of a church with which it is in communion. Further information is set out in the Cathedrals Measure 2021 and from Rule 83(2) of the Church Representation Rules*. For any further clarification on these points, or should you have a query, please get in touch with Rebekah Abbott.
*83(2) In these Rules, ‘actual communicant’ means a person –
(a) who has received Communion according to the use of the Church of England or a Church in communion with it at least three times during the 12 months preceding the date of the person becoming a member of a body the eligibility for membership of which depends on a person being an actual communicant, and
(b) who either is confirmed or ready and desirous of being confirmed or is receiving Communion as referred to in paragraph 1(b) of Canon B 15A (communicant members of other Churches subscribing to doctrine of Holy Trinity).

It’s an exciting time for the Employers' Initiative on Domestic Abuse: momentum is growing, with heightened public awareness of domestic abuse following the pandemic, increased government focus, and employers increasingly recognising their crucial role in enabling employees to recognise the signs of, and seek support on, domestic abuse.
The Employers’ Initiative on Domestic Abuse (known as EIDA) is committed to equality, diversity and inclusion in our mission to empower employers to act effectively against domestic abuse.
Our aim is to ensure that all team members, volunteers, trustees, job applicants and the people we come into contact with are given equal opportunity and that our organisation is representative of all sections of society.
We want our board to be representative of our society and membership and particularly welcome applications from people with lived experiences of domestic abuse, people based outside the southeast of England and in the nations of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and from people with experience as a people manager or employer, large or small.
Who we are
We are a free-to-join members' network of employers and a registered charity supporting over 1,500 large and small employers to take effective action on domestic abuse. Our members collectively employ over 25% of the UK workforce.
Our mission is to equip employers to support their employees affected by domestic abuse and to share best practice with other employers.
We endeavour to bring about constructive change, leading to a society where survivors thrive, and where domestic abuse is not tolerated.
Our Trustees are volunteer board members who play a vital role in making sure that EIDA achieves its mission. As a group, they:
- Oversee the overall management and administration of the charity.
- Ensure that EIDA has a clear strategy and that our work and goals are in line with our vision.
- Provide support and challenge to the executive team, enabling EIDA to grow and thrive.
We are seeking up to four new Trustees to join the existing group of eight.
EIDA has a UK-wide remit with a membership made up of employers, and we want to reflect that across our Trustees.
Trustee duties
Trustees are the people who lead our charity and decide how it is run. We envisage the trustee duties broadly as:
- Support and provide advice on EIDA’s purpose, vision, goals and activities.
- Attend Board meetings, adequately prepared to contribute to discussions.
- Approve operational strategies and policies and monitor and evaluate their implementation.
- Oversee EIDA’s financial plans and budgets and monitor and evaluate progress.
- Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation.
- Ensure that key risks are being identified, monitored and controlled effectively.
- Review and approve EIDA’s financial statements.
- Provide support and challenge to EIDA’s CEO.
- Keep abreast of changes in EIDA’s operating environment.
- Use independent judgment, acting legally and in good faith to promote and protect EIDA’s interests, to the exclusion of their own personal and/or any third-party interests.
- Participate in periodic appraisals of the performance of the Board of Trustees, collectively and individually.
- Represent EIDA at external functions, meetings and events.
Who we are looking for
We are looking for people willing to bring energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the role, and who will contribute to the diversity of thinking on our board.
Whether you are an experienced trustee or are looking to take your first step at board level, we would like to hear from you. We ask for:
- Commitment to tackling domestic abuse and EIDA’s mission.
- Willingness and ability to understand and accept their responsibilities and liabilities as trustees and to act in the best interests of the organisation.
- Ability to think creatively and strategically, exercise good, independent judgement.
- Effective communication skills and willingness to participate actively in discussions.
- A strong commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion and EIDA’s core values of Collaboration, Empowerment, Versatility, Openness and Kindness.
- Time to commit to supporting the organisation, including attendance at Board meetings (2 hours, 5 times annually), virtual and in-person events (4-6 annually) and any sub committees.
- Ability to build and maintain a healthy network that promotes the aims of EIDA across the business community, to drive member growth, and to enhance EIDA fundraising activities.
- Some experience as an employer or people manager.
