Our East Dulwich Shop Volunteers are in the middle of it all, and there’s plenty to get involved with. You might be sorting and pricing stock, engaging with customers, ringing items through the till, creating fantastic window displays or keeping our shop floor looking organised.

It’s up to you how much you commit. We have volunteers who support for a couple of hours a week and some do more. Many people volunteer either a morning or an afternoon each week - this is something that will be discussed at the selection stage, after you’ve applied. We would also love to hear from people willing to volunteer on Sundays.

We are seeking new people to join our Board of Trustees to support the good governance of our charity. It is an exciting time to join us as we work to launch our new strategy from 2026; an important timeframe as we await a Government White Paper on SEND and consider how best to adapt our services to ensure we reach those who need us most.

Who we are

Founded in 1983, IPSEA is a leading national charity focussed on supporting families to ensure that children and young people with SEND receive the education they are legally entitled to. Since our formation, we have actively helped to improve the education experience of thousands of children and young people with SEND. We do this by providing free and independent legal advice and casework support, undertaking policy work and delivering training on the SEND legal framework.

Who are we looking for?

We wish to recruit a number of new trustees who are committed to our vision and values and who bring complementary skills to those of our current Board members.

Trustees are expected to gain an understanding of the organisation’s purpose, and to contribute their own expertise, ensuring IPSEA fulfils its objectives, and in accordance with our charitable objects and Articles of Association

Whether you’re an experienced trustee or wanting to take your first step at Board level, we are particularly interested in hearing from people with expertise and skills in one or more of the following areas:

• IT / Digital transformation / cyber security
• Volunteer management
• Local Authority / Education
• Disabilities

Please note: a lack of expertise in these areas does not mean that an application will not be considered.

Our Board should also reflect the communities we support. We would particularly like to hear from candidates from ethnic minority backgrounds, LGBTQIA+ people, under-served communities and disabled people, as well as those with lived experience of the SEND system, either as a child or as a parent/carer.

What we can offer you

• an in-depth induction programme, training and reimbursement of reasonable out-of-pocket expenses
• the opportunity to be involved in making strategic decisions and developing new skills
• the opportunity to apply your knowledge and experience to an important cause
• a buddying system for new trustees as you settle into the role

The expected time commitment is six trustee meetings per year (meetings are held on weekdays in central London or at IPSEA’s office in Takeley, Essex with the option to join some meetings virtually), usually one strategic planning/training day and some other ad hoc time for occasional meetings and events.

Selling womenswear, menswear, shoes, and bags to household goods, our shops can be found in the London villages and bring in vital funds for Save the Children.

Our Wimbledon Shop Volunteers are in the middle of it all, and there’s plenty to get involved with. You might be sorting and pricing stock, engaging with customers, ringing items through the till, creating fantastic window displays or keeping our shop floor looking organised.

It’s up to you how much you commit. We have volunteers who support for a couple of hours a week and some do more. Many people volunteer either a morning or an afternoon each week - this is something that will be discussed at the selection stage, after you’ve applied.

Skills and experiences we seek

We welcome applications from people with a wide range of skills and experiences. You don’t need any retail or shop experience as full training will be provided. What’s important to us is that you are a team player, open to learning and to follow our policies as well as be an excellent representative for Save the Children.

We know that our shop teams are stronger when they are inclusive and representative of their communities. Everybody can make a real difference. People come to us for all sorts of reasons, from all backgrounds, and we will do what we can to find a role that works for you.

What happens next?

After you’ve filled in an application, we will invite you for an informal trial shift. It’s a great opportunity to visit the shop, meet some of our existing volunteers and have a go at some of the tasks that you would be supporting with as a shop volunteer. Hopefully allowing you to get a feel for the role and make sure it’s for you. We also ask for a couple of references (these don’t have to be formal workplace ones, just someone who has known you for over 6 months and isn’t related).

Mary’s Living & Giving Kew has become a much loved destination for followers of pre-loved fashion and a community hub for the wonderful residents of Kew. Located minutes from world famous Kew Gardens we welcome lots of UK and international visitors too.

We've recently reopened our Islington Shop with a gorgeous new look inspired by the neighbouring film studios. Purpose of the Role

As a Non-Executive Director, you’ll bring your skills, insights, and lived experience to help shape our strategic direction and keep us accountable. You won’t be involved in day-to-day operations — instead, you’ll act as a critical friend: offering challenge, support, and specialist advice when needed.

Non-Executive Directors ensure that our governance is robust, ethical, and in service of the communities we exist for.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide Strategic Oversight:
  Contribute to setting and reviewing our vision, mission, and long-term plans. Offer constructive challenge and help the Board make informed, brave decisions.
   

• Champion Accountability:
  Hold the Executive Directors and wider team to account for delivery of agreed plans, compliance, and ethical practice.
   

• Safeguard our Values:
  Uphold our principles of integrity, anti-oppression, collective liberation, and queer joy in every decision and discussion.
   

• Bring Specialist Insight:
  Offer your unique expertise, perspective, or lived experience to strengthen our understanding of the issues facing our communities.
   

• Ensure Good Governance:
  Attend meetings, read papers in advance, declare any conflicts of interest, and participate actively in discussions and decisions.
   

• Act as an Ambassador:
  Represent Queer Beyond Belief positively and help build trusted relationships with our communities and allies.
   

What we’re looking for

We welcome people from all walks of life — you don’t need Board experience to apply. We’re especially keen to hear from people with skills, perspectives, or lived experience that are underrepresented in leadership.

You should:

• Share our commitment to collective liberation, anti-oppression, and queer joy.
   

• Be willing to speak up and ask questions that help us do better.
   

• Be ready to work collaboratively and collectively — no solo heroes here.
   

• Be able to commit time for meetings, preparation, and occasional ad hoc support.
   

Eligibility

• You must be legally eligible to serve as a company director in the UK.
   

• You must declare any actual or potential conflicts of interest.

We know governance roles can feel daunting. We’re committed to making leadership accessible — we’ll provide an induction, reasonable adjustments, and opportunities to build your governance skills.

This is an unpaid voluntary role. Reasonable expenses for Board work will be reimbursed when pre-agreed.
