Role definition and Purpose

To support the CPA’s global Communications Team by producing impactful, original and eye-catching designs for both print and digital usage that support our programmes to improve healthcare outcomes for patients in more than 60 countries. The pro bono contractor will work with the Communications Team to create or format content in line with the CPA’s evolving Brandbook, having a chance to make their mark on the identity of this global organisation.

About CPA’s design philosophy

In our approach to visual design, we seek to create content in line with an aesthetic theory that can arguably be described as a form of digital neoclassicism in its aesthetic values. By this, we mean our designs embrace the best of the modern digital aesthetic popular in the Global North, making use of the colour blocking and some simplicity of the “vector minimialism” that became the foundation of the Corporate Memphis identity. We favour designs that lend themselves to accessibility, elegance and ease of visual navigation.

However, we also seek to recall the best of the Frutiger Aero aesthetic that dominated digital media from the mid-2000s to early 2010s in the Global North, and which in many ways lives on in the contemporary aesthetic choices popular in South Africa, India and South-East Asia. CPA’s aesthetic eschews both flat design and the dispersonal visualisations of Corporate Memphis for the three-dimensionality and emotional authenticity of Frutiger Aero. We add a maximalist flourish, playing with perspective, colour and boundaries in a way that helps bring our designs to life and make them relevant to our audience whilst still feeling fresh, clean and contemporary.

Key Responsibilities

• Professionally brand and format documents to the specifications of the Communications Lead and the Brandbook.

• In the future, the pro bono contractor may be asked to help contribute to an update to the visual identity of the charity.

Person Specification 

• Experience, competency using and independent access to advanced graphic design tools, which should include at least one tool on the list below, or an equivalent:

As our Grant Writer you will be responsible for identifying appropriate grant opportunities, and managing the grant development and proposal process from research to submitting grant applications with any supporting documents.

As our grant writer, you will:

• Identify appropriate sources of funding where we fit their criteria. 

• Write appropriately tailored grant/funding bids that meet funders’ interests and requirements and to write any additional documents in support of funding bids.

• Help develop a Trusts and Foundations strategy to help create and maintain strong and diverse income that meets Say Aphasia’s funding needs.

• Help us develop a case for support.

This role will complement the existing strengths of our Board, which includes leaders from business, civil society and philanthropy. We are seeking a candidate with deep charity sector experience who can bring insight and challenge to our work supporting frontline delivery organisations. The successful candidate will help ensure our strategic decisions remain grounded in the realities of the young people we serve and the charities that support them. They will play a key role in strengthening how we partner with our portfolio, and in championing systemic change across the education and employment landscape for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Charity Sector Related:

• Bring insight from your experience in the charity sector to strengthen Board understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing frontline delivery organisations.
• Champion the needs and perspectives of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, ensuring their lived experience remains central to our strategy and decisions.
• Support the Investment Committee with sector insight to inform funding and partnership decisions across our portfolio.

Role in Relation to the Youth Endowment Fund (YEF):

• Impetus is the legal entity accountable for the Youth Endowment Fund (YEF), which operates under the strategic direction of an independent Committee, chaired by an Impetus Trustee. While this trustee role does not sit on the YEF Committee, the Impetus Board retains overall governance responsibility for the Fund’s effective delivery, including safeguarding and financial oversight.
• The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of the public affairs landscape and the role of policy, funding, and government relationships in shaping large-scale initiatives like YEF. They will recognise the significance of YEF’s mission in preventing youth violence and the importance of influencing government decisions on future funding streams, including opportunities such as the Dormant Assets Fund. They will contribute to Board-level discussions with strategic insight and a clear grasp of their non-executive responsibilities.

Core Trustee Responsibilities:

• Attend quarterly Board meetings and occasional sub-committee or strategy sessions.

Essential skills and experience:

• Substantial experience in the UK charity sector, ideally with a focus on improving outcomes for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.
• A deep understanding of the operational and strategic challenges faced by frontline delivery organisations, including funding, growth, and impact measurement.
• Experience working in or with youth-focused charities, with a clear commitment to addressing the systemic barriers young people face.
• Proven ability to bring charity sector insight to strategic decision-making, particularly in support of long-term organisational partnerships.

Role Summary

As a Governance Officer, you will work closely with the Governance Lead to ensure strong governance practices across Roots Academy. Your role will focus on supporting governance frameworks, policies, and compliance measures to align with charity governance requirements and relevant regulations. You will also play a key role in embedding a culture of governance across the organisation.

Key tasks

Trustee Support

• Assist trustees with governance-related tasks and ensure they have access to relevant policies, guidelines, and resources.
• Direct trustees to appropriate regulatory frameworks, best practices, and governance training materials.

Governance & Compliance Support

• Support the onboarding process for new trustees, ensuring all necessary documentation is collected and securely stored.
• Assist in coordinating trustee meetings, including preparation of agendas, accurate minute-taking, and document distribution.
• Maintain key governance registers, such as the register of interests, policy register, and risk register, ensuring timely updates and compliance.

Policy & Risk Management

• Support the Governance Lead in developing and reviewing governance policies, including Conflict of Interest, Risk Management, and Whistleblowing Policies.
• Assist team leads in ensuring policies are implemented effectively and aligned with best practices.
• Help monitor compliance with Charity Commission regulations and the Fundraising Code of Conduct.

Embedding a Governance Culture

• Assist in raising awareness of governance principles across the organisation.
• Support the Governance Lead in organising training sessions or briefings on governance best practices.
• Help integrate governance principles into the organisation’s operations and decision-making processes.
