Came to Believe Recovery UK (CTBR UK) is a not-for-profit organisation helping people break free from addiction through immersive residential retreats and online support. We’re looking for new trustees to join our team and help us build our organisation and reach.

Who We’re Looking For

You don’t need to have been a trustee before – although prior experience is welcome. We're especially interested in people with skills in any of the following areas:

• Business, operations or charity leadership
• Finance or bookkeeping
• Fundraising, bid writing or donor development
• Legal expertise (especially charity or contract law)
• HR or volunteer coordination

If you're organised, thoughtful, and comfortable working as part of a small remote team, you'll fit right in. We're also keen to hear from people who have worked in community support, health and wellbeing, or have experience working with vulnerable adults in third-sector projects.

As a trustee, you’ll help guide the direction of CTBR UK as we continue to grow. You’ll:

We meet a minimum of quarterly online and keep in touch where appropriate between meetings. There’s no fundraising requirement or large time commitment.

Title: Economics Advisor – Missing People 

Summary 

Missing People is recruiting volunteers with expertise in economics to support the early planning of a project exploring the economic impact of missing episodes and the harms experienced by individuals while missing. This work will inform the development of a robust, evidence-based estimate of the cost of a missing episode and the socio-economic return on investment (ROI) of prevention efforts. 

As an Advisory Volunteer, you will provide expert guidance to help shape the scope and direction of this project. Your insights will help the charity identify key considerations, methodologies, and data needs - an area where we have limited in-house expertise. 

Description

Someone is reported missing every 90 seconds in the UK. Missing People is the only UK charity dedicated to reconnecting missing people and their loved ones. Our services include: 

• A free and confidential helpline, available 7 days a week, for missing people and their loved ones, 

• A specialist family support and counselling service, 

• Case publicity to support loved ones with sharing appeals,

• Specialist services for children and young people, and their loved ones, experiencing exploitation,

• Commissioned intensive support services for young people at particular risk, 

• Research, consultancy and training for professionals working around the issue of missing.

Our vision is that every missing person is found safe.

By supporting us to develop a compelling economic case for prevention, you’ll play a vital role in shaping how missing incidents are understood and addressed across the UK. We will use the information to influence nationally: sharing the figures with key decision-makers in government, policing, health and social care. This work will strengthen our case for funding essential services that prevent repeat missing episodes and support the development of more effective early intervention strategies.

We’ve already begun exploring this work but need additional external expertise to guide our planning and approach. As such we are recruiting new volunteer Economics Advisors. Advisors will be asked to:

• Attend and participate in monthly project planning meeting (1-2 hours via video call, scheduled flexibly on weekdays or evenings) for a period of 6 months.

• Review relevant documents and provide ad hoc advice between meetings (no more than 1-2 hours)

• Get further involved in the project with a weekly commitment, if desired – this is entirely optional.

What impact will you have? 

Your input will support Missing People to build a stronger case for prevention and change for missing people and their loved ones.

About the volunteer 

We are looking for volunteers with: 

• A strong understanding of data and working with complex statistics 

• Experience in economic analysis of social issues and public policy, cost-benefit analysis, or social return on investment (SROI) 

• Willingness to support and advise Missing People’s Head of Policy and Head of Research in understanding an area outside of our usual expertise 

• The ability to ask key questions, offer constructive challenge, and act as a critical friend to staff 

• Commitment to attend monthly meetings for a 6-month project period 

Shout is the UK’s only free, confidential, 24/7 text messaging support service for anyone who is struggling to cope. When people text 'Shout' to 85258, they are connected to a Shout Volunteer for a text conversation. Our volunteers provide a safe space for people to share what's causing them distress, while showing warmth and compassion.

Tasks and Responsibilities

If your application is successful, you’ll be enrolled in a training group. New groups start every two weeks.

Shout Volunteers receive 25 hours of free training in communication, listening, managing and assessing risk, and problem solving. The training is self-paced and done online. You’ll learn how to bring people in distress to a place of calm and practice skills that will be useful to you throughout life.

As we are investing in you throughout your time with us, our hope is that you will complete the training in a timely manner and look at this as a longer term commitment. The experience you gain over time is valuable and our goal is to have volunteers commit to 200 hours on the platform, which can take up to two years to complete, as we ask you to take one 2-4 hour shift per week. 

Our Volunteer Training Support team is here to support you, answer any questions and provide feedback during training and throughout your time with Shout. You’ll be joining an incredibly supportive volunteer community and have access to the resources you need to do your role.

As a volunteer, you’ll be supporting people in distress, so it’s important we see the skills required to do that while you are in training. While most trainees complete the training and go on to volunteer, not everyone will pass the training. If this happens, there are other ways you can still support us.

Selection Criteria

A Shout Volunteer is kind and compassionate, a good listener, and has the ability to remain calm when supporting people in crisis. You will also:

• Understand the difference between being friendly and being a friend

• Be aware of your own mental health and wellbeing

• Be open-minded

• Be supportive

• Be reliable

• Be discreet and able to respect confidentiality at all times

• Be accepting and non-judgemental

• Be passionate about contributing some of your time to a cause such as Shout

• Adopt a growth mindset, and be willing to accept feedback

Requirements

• You must live in the United Kingdom or New Zealand while volunteering. 
• You must be over 18 years of age.
• You will need a reliable internet connection and a private place to take your shift.
• All of your volunteering must be done using a laptop or desktop computer and Google Chrome.

It’s worth spending time thinking about the nature of the role, and whether it’s right for you. We support all texters, regardless of race, religion, sexual identity or issue. You will need to be comfortable addressing topics frequently discussed with texters (suicide, self-harm, depression, etc.) without compromising your own mental health.

• Have you recently experienced grief, loss or change issue/s? For example; someone close to you has been ill or has died, you’ve lost your job, your relationship has ended.

You should leave up to an hour to complete the form. As Shout is a text based service and we do not conduct in person interviews for our volunteer candidates what you write in your application and the strength of your references are how we get to know you. 

We appreciate when candidates take the time to write thoughtful, considered answers. We recommend you review your application with an eye toward things like spelling, grammar and punctuation. While some of our texters will occasionally reach out using more informal text speak, our volunteers respond in full sentences and double check their messages for accuracy before hitting send. 

Your application will be reviewed once we have received responses from both of your references. We ask for a personal reference and a professional reference. The personal reference can be a friend or colleague but the other must be someone who knows you professionally or has supervised you in some way. 

This could be a manager or supervisor from where you work or a teacher or educator from where you study. We recommend you choose references who are able to speak to your ability to fulfil the selection criteria outlined above.

We do not accept references from family members. This includes your partner or their relatives, your children, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents or godparents. 

Please allow up to a month for us to review your application and return a decision. 

If your application is approved, you can book your place on training. Training groups usually start every two weeks and spaces are available to book a couple of months ahead. While you are in training and before you are allowed on the platform we will carry out a background check.

As a Grassroots Organiser, you will change animal lives by:

• Organising events and actions in your local area
• These will include peaceful protests, public outreach, social meet-ups and leafleting.
• Ideally you will organise 1 event every 1-2 months
• We will provide you with all the support and materials you need, as well as covering relevant expenses
• Growing a community of advocates by promoting your events and encouraging others to join you, bringing people together for the animals to create change
• Joining us at national events organised by staff team
• Taking campaign actions remotely, such as writing emails, letters and social media actions

If you’re excited by the prospect of leading and organising effective actions at a local level, all while making a genuine difference to animals, this is the role for you.

You will be supported directly by THL staff members who will steward you throughout your time with us, including a full onboarding process to get you started. No prior experience is needed and we’ll give you everything you need to build your skills and take action.

There is no set time commitment for this role, all we ask is that you can organise at least 1 event every 1-2 months. On average, it takes around 4-6 hours to deliver an event (including planning and delivery).

DIY Skills Advisers (DIYSA) Volunteer 

If you’re looking for a varied, hands-on volunteering role that makes a difference in people’s lives while supporting clients to learn new skills, then look no further than this exciting role. 

Shelter’s DIY Skills Advisers (DIYSA) help people to gain fundamental DIY skills to build a positive future in their homes after a prolonged period of homelessness, turning a house into a home. They also help people to improve and maintain their homes, often preventing eviction. Referrals to the DIYSA service can be received from both Shelter colleagues and support staff from local partner organisations. 

The DIYSA team works with individuals, sharing their skills to enable them to participate in home improvements, teaching them how to paint, wallpaper, build flat-pack furniture and gardening. As well as support for individuals, the DIY Skills Advisers run workshops across the country to bring communities together and upskill those who attend, providing clients with energy saving advice, educating them around cutting costs and improving energy efficiency in the home. 

This role is an opportunity to make a real difference to the households we assist. You’ll be developing your own knowledge and skills to assist local people and households with a range of housing disrepairs and challenges as well as providing practical DIY guidance You will gain experience of volunteering within a recognised national housing charity, while supporting your local community. 

Suggested Involvement: The role is flexible, however due to the nature of the role, requires you to be available for the day, in accordance with the DIYSA’s diary. 

Availability: This volunteering opportunity will take place within our working hours, Monday-Friday, 9am – 5pm 

Location: Shelter Birmingham, 38 The Priory Queensway, Birmingham, B4 7LA, however this is a community-based role, visiting people in their own homes in and around Birmingham so travelling will be required.

Why volunteer with Shelter? 

A home is a fundamental human need, as vital as education or healthcare. But in Britain today, that right is denied to millions of people whose lives are blighted by homelessness, bad housing conditions, soaring rents, discrimination and the threat of eviction. The time for change is now.

As a DIYSA Volunteer, you’ll be supporting the day-to-day work of DIYSA as they provide advice, guidance and skills to households in Birmingham.

Volunteers are essential to Shelter’s mission to end housing injustice. We welcome volunteers from all backgrounds. The insights and life experience our volunteers bring to Shelter are valued as much as their contribution through volunteering. 

We aim to provide our volunteers with a positive experience. This is by prioritising accessibility and tailoring the advice we provide to the needs of the individual. We make sure our policies and processes are equitable, which means that no-one is unfairly disadvantaged while volunteering because of their background or identity. 

Main Tasks include 

• Working alongside the DIYSA to provide DIY repairs, teach households DIY skills,

• Accompany the DIYSA, visiting people at their homes, and assessing the repair/skill need 

• Painting and decorating 

• Gardening work 

• Flat pack furniture assembly 

• Fitting curtain rails and blinds 

• Hanging pictures and shelves 

• Supporting the DIYSA with the delivery of community-based workshops in skills such as drills workshops, gardening, energy saving practices and help around the management of mould. 

Skills and experience required 

• Your main role is to support the DIYSA and help them complete jobs in a timely and effective manner 

• You don’t need to have a background in DIY for this role. We are looking for a willing learner who has excellent communication and listening skills

• An interest in supporting and motivating people to make positive changes in their lives through acquiring new skills and interests

• A strong team player who can take on instructions to complete jobs to a high standard 

• Enjoys working with others and contribute to delivering an excellent service 

• Ability to connect with clients and contribute to the community 

• Willingness to follow Shelter’s policies, including volunteering, health & safety, equality & diversity, confidentiality & data protection

The Children's Book Project is a national charity on a mission to tackle book poverty. We passionately believe that every child should have the opportunity to own a book and have, in the last year, celebrated gifting our 1 millionth book! We are looking for some wonderful volunteers to help us in managing book sorting and packing with a range of amazing corporate volunteers at our three HQs in Birmingham, Leeds and London.

Befriend a housebound older person at their home near you in Coventry - any day or time, from 30 min/fortnight. You'll be carefully matched by shared interests & supported.

Befriending an older person in your local area takes just 30-60 minutes, fortnightly or weekly. It fits into your life, and you gain a new friend. You can learn more about Coventry life & history, and feel great that you've made a housebound older person feel less lonely. Volunteers and older people come from all backgrounds. They could take short walks, bake together, watch sport together, discuss literature, learn to crochet...

You will be carefully matched by your shared hobbies and interests, and logistical factors such as shared language, how close to home or work you'd like to be, and when you'd each like to chat. Support is available at any time, should you need it.

Visits can take place during evenings & weekends, though our most popular request is for daytime visits. We also offer telephone befriending. Volunteers must be 18+, but children can come along when accompanied. Dogs are welcome too!

Visits can simply include chat and a cuppa, or can involve going for a short walk together, doing crafts, playing games, gardening together, or watching sport. It's up to you!
