Purpose of the Role:

To support the delivery of engaging and inclusive academic sessions for newly arrived migrant girls aged 11 19 at the Baytree Centre as part of the Arrive and Thrive programme. The role involves assisting teachers in creating a positive and supportive learning environment, helping students with subjects such as ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) and Maths, and providing one-to-one support to those needing extra assistance. By offering guidance, encouragement, and structured support, the volunteer will contribute to the girls’ confidence, academic progress, and integration into formal education.

Main Responsibilities:

- Collaborate with teachers in delivering ESOL and Maths lessons.

- Provide one-to-one support to students, helping them overcome learning challenges and participate actively in lessons.

- Foster a positive and inclusive classroom environment where all students feel supported and able to contribute.

- Encourage students’ academic progress while promoting motivation and engagement.

Skills and Qualities Required:

- Strong academic background, ideally with GCSE or degree-level education in Maths and/or English, enabling competent academic support.

- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds and language levels.

- Patience and empathy to support students with varying learning paces and needs. - Enthusiasm for creating a supportive and engaging learning experience.

- Ability to work collaboratively with teachers and other volunteers.

- Adhere to Baytree Centre policies and safeguarding procedures.

Commitment:

- One session per week for at least two terms.

Key Responsibilities

Facilitating Peer Support Group Session/ Community Moderation

• Plan and facilitate group peer support sessions, ensuring all participants feel welcome and included.

• Foster a safe, respectful, and confidential space for sharing experiences and mutual support.

• Adapt session content and approach to meet the needs of participants.

• Contribute to moderating messages from our 24/7 Peer Support Community Platform (hosted on Discord). This is a daily task completed between PSWs.

Safeguarding

• Remain vigilant for safeguarding concerns during all interactions.

• Raise safeguarding concerns to the Safeguarding Team via completion of an Incident Log. Report any concerns promptly, following AuDHD UK’s safeguarding procedures.

• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of safeguarding policies and best practices.

Additional Duties

• Attend regular check-ins and training sessions with the Peer Support Coordinator.

• Contribute to feedback and improvement processes for the peer support programme.

• Support the wellbeing and development of fellow volunteers by fostering a positive team culture.

Essential Skills & Attributes

• Lived experience of AuDHD or similar neurodivergence  (desirable but not essential).

• Empathy, active listening, and strong interpersonal skills.

• Commitment to confidentiality, safeguarding, and non-judgemental support.

• Ability to manage sensitive situations and recognise when to escalate concerns.

• Reliability, punctuality, and good communication skills.

Time Commitment Estimate

• Running sessions: 1.5 hrs/session per week (including facilitating and possible safeguarding concern admin)

• Applicants should be available for at least one of the following Peer Support Groups: Mon 7-8pm, Tues 11am-12pm, Thurs 2-3pm and Saturday 9-10am. If you are not available for the groups but still wish to apply to be a moderator, you are welcome to.

A laptop and a quiet space to volunteer is essential.

How much time can you give?

A minimum of 2+ hours per week is required. We are flexible and like to work around you.

Do you like to learn?

We provide training for all volunteers that join us. Our peer support training is accredited.  20-25 hours of volunteering training is required and is self led online.

MAIN TASKS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

· To support the provision of the Airplay and Ben Club activities and workshops

· Developing relationships with young people in a safe environment

· Supervising children and young people in activities, workshops and discussion sessions

· Engaging in learning and play with younger children

· Working with children and young people to track their progress

· Data entry/light admin work may be required

YOU WILL NEED:
