We are seeking a Finance Trustee to join our Board of Trustees*.  You will have:

• Strong senior-level knowledge of investment management (equities and fixed income)

About Us

The Thalidomide Trust is a unique organisation supporting beneficiaries, now all in their 60s, born with disabilities as a result of their mother taking the drug, thalidomide, during pregnancy. 

They are a remarkable group of people, who have achieved a great deal despite often living with extreme levels of disability, including limb damage, hearing and visual impairment, brain and sensory impairment and damage to internal organs.

Our beneficiaries have very complex and varied needs which are increasing as they age. We have gained an in-depth understanding of their evolving needs through our high level of contact with beneficiaries and our structured programme of three-yearly Holistic Needs Assessments (HNAs).

Commitment

• This is a voluntary role, but reasonable expenses incurred will be reimbursed.
• London / St Neots / Hybrid
• You should be willing and able to devote approximately 15 – 20 days (plus travel time) per annum to the Trust. Specifically, be available to attend three full day board meetings and one morning virtual meeting as well as Finance Committee meetings. There may be various projects, webinars and/or events throughout the year, and availability to remotely authorise transactions and documents on an ad hoc basis (with reasonable notice) is required.

About the lay trustee role

Lay trustee role description

Purpose of role: Lay trustees enhance the knowledge, expertise, judgement, and balance available to the Board of Trustees to ensure a financially sound, healthy, and legally compliant organisation. Their principal assets will be their knowledge and expertise, independence, and the confidence and ability to be a critical friend of the Association.

Responsible to: President (Chair of the Board of Trustees)

Key working relationships

• Other members of the Association Council
• Other stakeholder organisations such as the Royal College of Anaesthetists, and charity partners

Term of appointment:

Following a successful interview and satisfactory references, the lay trustee will be appointed for a three-year term commencing from the Annual Members’ Meeting in September 2026.

Time commitment

The Board of Trustees meets up to five times a year. The dates for board meetings are set 12 months in advance from October to September. Meetings normally take place on Fridays approximately every 8 weeks as either a half-day or full-day meeting at 21 Portland Place, London or via videoconference, but videoconferencing facilities will be available for all meetings.

Trustees are expected to attend each board meeting and to engage in communication between board meetings with staff and board colleagues as required.

Expenses

This role is voluntary and is unremunerated. Trustees will be reimbursed for their expenses for travel, hotel accommodation and subsistence when attending meetings. Expenses will be paid in accordance with the expenses policy. As this is a voluntary role, trustees are not otherwise compensated for their service.

Training

Training is provided for trustees to enable them to perform their governance duties effectively.

We are looking for a new member of the Canterbury Cathedral Audit and Risk Committee, which provides independent oversight of the Cathedral’s systems of internal control, risk management, and financial reporting. As a member of the Audit and Risk Committee, you will support the Chapter, the Cathedral's governing body, in discharging its responsibilities as a registered charity and steward of public trust, overseeing external and internal audit functions, and the mitigation of financial, reputational, operational and safeguarding risks.

This is meaningful work in a truly unique setting, and we are seeking a committee member who can combine professional expertise with a collaborative spirit and a commitment to the Cathedral’s evolving mission. We’re looking for Photographer / Filmmaker Volunteers to help us capture the heart of SUNSHINE — our people, our programmes, our impact, and the lived experiences of those facing loneliness.

What You’ll Do

1. Capture SUNSHINE Across London

Head out into the city — parks, streets, markets, neighbourhoods — to capture photos and film clips of loneliness or positive human connection that reflect London’s diversity, energy, and humanity.

2. Document Our Activities

Attend SUNSHINE Programmes and events to photograph or film real moments of connection, joy, courage, and community.

3. Build Our Visual Library

Create a unique, high-quality collection of images and short video clips that we can use across our website, publicity materials, social media, and fundraising campaigns.

4. Tell Human Stories

Help us visually communicate the reality of loneliness — and the hope, positivity, and transformation that SUNSHINE brings.

5. Support Our Digital Presence

Work with our marketing volunteers to produce short clips, reels, TikToks, and social-ready visuals that raise our profile and inspire people to join us.

As a community engagement volunteer you and your fellow branch members will create a range of activities to help spread the word about SSAFA within your community to ensure that that our Armed Forces community know that SSAFA are here to help and that we need the public’s support to continue offering our services.

This role is diverse and allows for you to focus on the areas that you have skills or interests in. The role has flexibility and can work around your other commitments.

Below are some examples of possible activities you can take on or be a part of as a SSAFA Community Engagement Volunteer.

What you will be doing

• Activity Organisers - Love planning? Help coordinate amazing events like charity dinners, carol concerts, and local fairs.
• Event Champions - Be the friendly face of SSAFA! Help at events, chat with visitors, sell merchandise, and spread the word about our work.
• Promoting SSAFA Services - Help provide a warm, welcoming presence at Veterans Breakfast clubs, cafes or hubs - offering information about SSAFA services and signposting as appropriate.
• SSAFA Storytellers -Deliver engaging talks to organisations and groups, sharing SSAFA’s incredible history and mission.
• Community Connectors - Collaborating with the Community Engagement Manager to establish a local network, promote SSAFA's services, and respond to community opportunities such as gardening projects.
• Fundraising Heroes - Whether it’s rallying local businesses, organising events, or getting creative with unique fundraising ideas, you’ll play a crucial role in keeping SSAFA’s support going strong.
• Administrators - Are you detail-oriented and love keeping things organised? Assist with branch and event administration, manage schedules and branch calendars, and ensure everything runs smoothly currently being undertaken.

The skills you need

• Be friendly and approachable.
• Confident to engage with the public, potential clients, volunteers and SSAFA colleagues face-to-face.
• Reliable attitude, staying connected with your Branch and/or Community Engagement Manager about your availability.
• Access to public transport or a car to get to events if necessary.
• Basic IT skills would be an advantage.

The impact you will make:

By supporting local and national fundraising activity, you will help ensure that NCI stations can continue to operate effectively. Your contribution will directly support the volunteers on watch who provide a crucial extra set of eyes along the coast, helping to prevent incidents and assist emergency services when needed.

What you will be doing:

As a volunteer station supporter fundraiser, you will be involved in your stations fundraising activities, including:

• Attending local fundraising events and community activities organised by your station
• Manning stalls at events, shows, and public spaces
• Collecting, checking, and emptying donation boxes in agreed locations
• Assisting with simple fundraising initiatives organised by your local station
• Helping to promote NCI within the local community and encouraging public support

This role is ideal for someone looking to gain experience, confidence, and skills while supporting a coastal water safety charity. Would be beneficial to be located near to an NCI station, or reasonable travelling disctance from a station. Would need to hold a driving licence for travelling to and from events.

• Enthusiasm, commitment and willingness to get involved

• Friendly, confident and approachable manner
• Good communication and interpersonal skills
• Reliability and a flexible approach to tasks
• An interest in supporting coastal safety and local communities

No previous fundraising experience is required – training and support will be provided.
