Volunteering for Sense

Our amazing team of volunteers help us run over 100 shops across England and Wales.  Every donated item that you sort, prepare and sell helps to raise vital funds to support us in our mission to make sure no one, no matter how complex their disabilities, is isolated, left out, or unable to fulfil their potential. Our shops are at the heart of local communities – sharing the work of Sense, and helping to secure support for our life changing work.

What your role will involve

There are a variety of tasks that you can get involved with in the shop, including:

• Welcoming and assisting customers, providing great customer service and a fantastic shopping experience
• Receiving donated goods from members of the public
• Sorting, steaming, tagging and preparing donated goods for sale
• Creating eye catching window and in-shop displays
• Keeping the shop floor well stocked, tidy, clean and organised
• Processing sales and serving on the till
• Promoting Gift Aid and other Sense fundraising initiatives
• Acting as an ambassador for Sense; promoting the shop and Sense in your local community
• Supporting with the recruitment and training of new volunteers
• Following new health and safety measures to ensure the safety of everyone

Job Overview
We are seeking dedicated and compassionate Volunteers to join our drop in group in Thame, South Oxfordshire that take place on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday afternoon of the month between 2 pm -3.30 pm . This role is ideal for individuals looking to make a meaningful impact in the community while gaining valuable experience.

The Say Aphasia charity provides support groups across the UK for people with aphasia; a language and communication disability caused by a brain injury like a stroke. Aphasia affects over 350,000 people in the UK but is little understood or known about by the public. It is the only aphasia charity set up by people with aphasia for people with aphasia; helping them to adapt to their new way of life and regain their independence and confidence.

Aphasia occurs due to injury to the brain such as a stroke. It affects access to language, resulting in difficulties following conversations, speaking, reading and writing.

Volunteers will support the running of the group with communicating, and will have the opportunity to utilise their communication skills and IT knowledge to take a register of attendance.

Responsibilities

• Provide companionship and support to individuals, particularly those living with asphasia.
• Assist in organising activities that promote social interaction and engagement.
• Communicate effectively with participants, ensuring their needs are understood and met.
• Help maintain a safe and welcoming environment for all participants.
• Collaborate with other volunteers to enhance the group.

Qualifications

• An understanding or knowledge in aphasia is desirable.
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse groups.

Help us make a difference in Bromsgrove for people living with aphasia.

Say Aphasia is launching a brand new support group in Bromsgrove and we are looking for enthusiastic, compassionate volunteers to help run it.

About the Group

Aphasia is a communication disability, usually caused by a stroke or brain injury, that affects a person's ability to speak, read, write, and understand language.

The Say Aphasia Bromsgrove Group provides a safe, welcoming, and relaxed environment where people with aphasia can meet others, practise their communication skills, rebuild confidence, and reduce the isolation that can often accompany aphasia. It is a vital lifeline for our members.

Group Details

• Location: Bromsgrove, Worcs, B61 0EP (Exact venue details available upon application)

What We Need from You

We are seeking reliable and friendly individuals who are:

What will you be doing?

To support delivery of the E‑Save app, you’ll provide essential administrative support to our volunteer‑led, largely remote organisation. 

You’ll help keep the charity running smoothly by supporting the board and key personnel with communications, record‑keeping, document updates, online meeting organisation, task tracking and maintaining clear, well‑ordered systems.

What are we looking for?

We’re seeking a UK‑based volunteer with at least three years’ administrative experience, including confident use of Microsoft tools. 

You’ll be organised, detail‑focused and able to manage your own workload. 

You’ll support meetings, maintain online files, update documents, manage data and contact lists, and provide general admin support to the Board, Operations Director and volunteer HR team as needed.

What difference will you make?

Your work will provide the operational backbone needed for the organisation to grow and deliver its ambitious programme. 

By ensuring effective administration and communication, you’ll help enable drive the  focus on environmental impact—supporting the delivery of the E‑Save app and helping bring practical climate action into everyday homes across the UK.

As a charity we can help thousands of cats each year thanks to the generous donations from our supporters. Raising funds is a key role in our charity, helping to raise the vital funds needed to help more cats and kittens in need.

As a fundraising volunteer, we will support you every step of the way to ensure your time at Cats Protection is a positive and rewarding one. Whatever time you can give really does make a big difference We have lots of exciting activities to choose from for example attending a fundraising event, fundraising online, promoting fundraising activities on social media, handling administrative tasks, or contributing to the development of new fundraising ideas. Whatever your skill set, this role could be perfect for you! 

What can I expect to be doing? 

As a flexible role, you have the choice to be involved in the following: 

• Face-to-face fundraising – organising or helping with our fundraising events, attending supermarket collections or local markets. 

• Distributing collection tins – popping collection tins into local shops and pubs and collecting them when they’re full. 

• Bringing new ideas! - We always love to come up with new ideas to raise funds for cats and we’d love to help bring yours to life. 

• Engaging with your local branches and Fundraising Hub and feeling like an integral part of the team! 

What are the benefits to you and the cats? 

You will have the opportunity to develop your knowledge though Cats Protection’s learn online system, providing you with the skills to thrive as a fundraiser.  You’ll also have the chance to meet new people and be part of a dedicated team of volunteers.

Are you passionate about sustainability? Do you want to make a real impact on household carbon footprints and promote sustainable living? Can you help us crowdsource our innovative E-Save app and outreach programme?

What will you be doing?

To support delivery of the E‑Save app, you’ll help recruit, support and coordinate our growing UK‑based volunteer community. You’ll provide administrative oversight for current volunteers, support ongoing recruitment, and help develop volunteer and HR processes.

 Over time, you’ll contribute to policies, engagement programmes, crowd‑sourcing initiatives, and local pilot volunteers.

What are we looking for?

We’re looking for UK‑based volunteers with experience in HR, volunteer management, or people operations. You’ll help lead volunteer recruitment, onboarding and training; develop HR and volunteer policies; support engagement and wellbeing; and maintain confidential records. 

You’ll need strong organisational and interpersonal skills, knowledge of safeguarding and data protection, and the ability to support a diverse, remote volunteer team.
