Are you a committed Christian with professional investment experience who has a heart to see a new generation develop a vibrant faith in Jesus Christ?
We are seeking a volunteer with professional investment experience to join our Audit & Finance Committee, supporting the Board in its responsibility for financial oversight, governance and assurance.
This role would suit someone who has worked as an investment consultant, investment manager, or in a similar advisory capacity, and who can bring independent expertise to strengthen the Committee’s oversight of our investment arrangements.
Scripture Union holds investments of approximately £1.9 million (including a capital endowment of around £0.65 million) and a further c.£0.8 million held in cash or cash-equivalent deposits to support liquidity needs. These invested assets are managed externally by Rathbones through charity-specific pooled investment funds. Investment decisions are made in line with our ethical investment policy, which ensures that funds avoid sectors inconsistent with our Christian values.
About the role
As part of a broader remit covering financial reporting, internal controls, audit, risk management and compliance, the Committee also plays a key role in:
reviewing and approving our investment policies; and
monitoring the performance of the investment management, making recommendations to the Board where appropriate.
In this context, you will help the Committee:
monitor the performance of our funds managed by Rathbones;
provide constructive challenge on investment performance and reporting;
support the Committee in reviewing whether the current investment strategy and asset mix remains appropriate; and
contribute to providing assurance that there is a robust level of due diligence, oversight and governance in place.
This is not a fund management role. Instead, it is a governance role focused on independent scrutiny, challenge and assurance, as part of the Committee’s wider responsibilities for financial performance, control and risk management.
What you will bring
We are particularly interested in candidates with:
experience as an investment consultant, investment manager, or similar;
strong understanding of investment performance, asset allocation and risk;
experience of reviewing investment manager reports and providing insight at a strategic level;
the confidence to provide constructive challenge within a committee setting;
the ability to support non-specialists in understanding complex investment matters; and
a strong interest in supporting good governance and stewardship of charitable resources.
Previous experience of charity governance or committee membership would be helpful but is not essential.
Commitment
This is a voluntary role. The Committee usually meets four times a year with additional preparation time required to review papers in advance.
You will play an important role in supporting the Committee to fulfil its responsibilities for financial oversight, risk management and investment governance, helping to ensure the charity’s resources are managed effectively and responsibly.
Scripture Union is a Christian charity that exists to see a new generation with a vibrant faith in Jesus.

The UK Men’s Sheds Association is seeking a small number of new trustees, based anywhere in the UK. The role is voluntary (reasonable expenses are covered) but is an opportunity to be part of an engaged, effective and friendly Board of an important national charity.
While the roles are primarily as general trustees, there will also be opportunities to serve on one of our two formal sub-committees – Audit & Risk and People. We are also recruiting for a trustee to act as our Treasurer (a role-specific advert is on our website).
The UKMSA Board fulfils a governance function, ensuring we use our resources responsibly, and that we comply with our legal and regulatory obligations. As a trustee, you will play a key role in ensuring UKMSA’s sustainability and effectiveness, overseeing our strategy and governance, including ensuring we continue to operate to the public benefit. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to use their professional and personal expertise to make a meaningful difference to communities across the UK.
We welcome applicants from all backgrounds, and you do not need previous charity Board experience.
We regularly review the collective skills and experience of the Board members, and use this to inform recruitment. In particular, we are looking this time around for applicants who can bring significant charity or broader financial experience (not only for the Treasurer role but also to support our Audit & Risk function); experience of national or significant fundraising; and a background in HR or ‘people skills’. These are, however, not prescriptive and we welcome applications from anyone who feels they may have something to offer a medium-sized national charity which has significant impact which belies its size.
Our recruitment is also informed by our policies, especially our EDI and volunteering policies. While the Men’s Sheds movement itself has an understandable male focus, we are keen to maintain a truly diverse Board, both in terms of the protected characteristics under the Equalities Act and in terms of the diversity of experience and background our trustees bring. It is not a UKMSA policy per se, but we aim to maintain a balance of trustees who come from the Shedding movement alongside those who bring external perspectives. Trustees may be based in any part of the UK (we aim to have at least one trustee who is based in every one of the UK home nations).
We ask that all trustees explicitly sign up to their responsibilities, both statutory and regulatory, with a commitment to good governance and ethical leadership. We also expect a willingness to work collaboratively as part of a diverse and supportive Board, and as a constructive critical friend with the CEO and staff senior leadership team.
We are the support body for Men’s Sheds across the UK. We work hard to inspire and support the development of Men's Sheds.

About BABCP: The British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) is a charity and the lead organisation for Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) in the UK and Ireland. We are a membership body with around 27,000 members and as a professional organisation we promote, improve and uphold standards of CBT practice, supervision and training. Our CBT Register is accredited by the Professional Standards Authority. We were founded over fifty years ago, and have experienced significant growth in recent years, moving from a highly regarded special interest group to a professional association. We recognise the importance of high-quality mental healthcare that is evidence-based, and we help to protect the public by supporting best practice. We value diversity, integrity and professionalism – you can read more about our strategy and values here. BABCP is a registered charity and a limited company in law. We have a staff team of around sixty people and annual income in excess of £3m.
What we are looking for?: We are looking for one new lay person to join our Board as ‘Lay Trustee Director’, meaning you will be both a trustee of the charity and a director of the company. Our Board is made up of ten Trustee Directors who are elected from within BABCP’s membership and up to three Lay Trustee Directors. We are looking for a Lay Trustee Director with a proven track record of excellence in their field, who can bring fresh perspectives and experience from other professional sectors and walks of life.
You should:
· Be able to take important decisions using sound, objective reasoning and with good attention to detail.
· Be willing to ask questions and constructively challenge the status quo.
· Be able to think creatively and strategically, while being committed to operating with integrity.
· Have the capacity to devote time and effort to the role.
· Understand the responsibilities of the position.
· Not be barred from acting as charity trustee or company director (further eligibility declarations and checks will be required if appointed).
We particularly welcome applicants with skills and expertise in IT and/or Human Resources.
We recognise that skills and experience come in many forms, and that some groups have traditionally faced barriers in accessing formal opportunities. BABCP welcomes applications from those who possess the relevant attributes and experience drawn from all aspects of their lives and those who may have had a less traditional career pathway.
While we are looking to bring fresh ‘lay’ perspectives to our Board, if you are one of the millions of people who have direct or indirect lived experience of CBT and related therapies, you may find this experience helps to bring the value of this role to life.
What will you be doing?: As a Trustee Director you will, as part of the wider Board, oversee the organisational structures, systems, policies and resources in place to achieve the charitable objects of the Association. You will help ensure that BABCP exclusively pursues its stated purpose against a defined strategy and in compliance with its governing document and relevant legislation and regulation. You will attend our Board meetings, reviewing all Board papers in advance. You may also be asked to participate in additional committees or working groups focused on specific themes areas, taking into account your areas of expertise and interest where possible.
The role is voluntary and unpaid, though travel and approved out-of-pocket expenses will be covered.
How you will you make a difference?: There are very few in the UK and Ireland who are not affected by the consequences of mental health difficulties. By volunteering your expertise and experience with BABCP, you will ultimately be helping to improve the mental wellbeing of those nations and to protect the public who are directly or indirectly impacted by mental health issues.
