Our vision is a world where everyone has the opportunity to read, and our mission is to offer people around the world who lack access to books the opportunity to read for pleasure, study and lifelong learning. Every year we work with our partners worldwide to provide over one million brand-new books which support or establish libraries in communities where people with barriers to reading and learning are at their highest.
The insight, expertise and commitment of our trustees are central to achieving our charitable mission. As we look ahead to our next strategic period, we are seeking to appoint new trustees to strengthen our Board.
This is an exciting opportunity to play a pivotal role in shaping the organisation’s future direction, supporting effective governance and ensuring that, together with our partners, we maximise our global impact.
We are particularly interested in individuals with:
- Expertise in international development and programme management
- Experience in librarianship, especially in international contexts
- Knowledge of global public education systems
- Lived experience of the communities where we work
Above all, we are looking for individuals who share our belief in the transformative power of books and who are motivated to contribute their skills and insight to a dynamic and committed Board.

Role title
Trustee
Role purpose
As a trustee of Community Resource, you’ll play a key role in guiding the charity’s direction and ensuring we stay true to our mission.
You’ll provide strategic leadership and oversight, working closely with the CEO and leadership team to help us achieve our goals and deliver lasting impact.
Trustees take part in board meetings and may also contribute to subcommittees or working groups focused on areas such as finance, risk, events, and safeguarding.
You may also represent Community Resource externally, helping to build relationships with partners, supporters, and stakeholders and attend inspiring events that celebrate and support rural communities across Shropshire.
Requirements
We’re particularly keen to hear from individuals with current or recent senior-level experience in areas such as law, business accounting, IT, cybersecurity, health, or entrepreneurship. These skills are especially valuable as we navigate growth and innovation.
However, we also warmly welcome interest from those with other relevant expertise or lived experience that could benefit our organisation and enrich the board’s perspective.
Location
Shrewsbury, Shropshire
Salary
Unremunerated, but reasonable expenses may be reimbursed.
Commitment
The board meets eight times a year, combining in person and online sessions (usually Tuesdays, 4– 7pm), including our AGM. Additionally, there is an annual trustee and leadership team away day.
Length of term
All trustees are appointed for an initial term of three years and are eligible to re-stand for election for up to a maximum of two subsequent terms.
Step 1
Submit your CV and a covering letter describing your rationale for applying and the skills you can bring to the role of trustee.
Step 2
Have an initial conversation with the CEO and/or Chair of the Board of Trustees.
Step 3
If both sides agree there’s a good fit, you’ll be invited to meet members of the wider board for an interview.
Step 4
The interviewing trustees will make a recommendation to the board regarding your appointment. You will receive a written response as to whether the board is proceeding with your application for joining the board and if successful, arrangements for your induction.

Share’s trustee team has responsibility for overseeing strategy and performance. Share currently has eight trustees, and is looking to recruit up to three more with the enthusiasm, skills and commitment we need to help guide Share through the next phase of its development. Trustees are supported by Share’s Senior Leadership Team led by the Chief Executive.
The full Board meets six times a year. Meetings are in person and usually take place in the evening, with the exception of an annual away day. In addition, Trustees will usually sit on one of our Board Sub-Committees which meet four times a year with meetings taking place virtually.
Who we are looking for
We strongly believe that diversity of thought and experience directly contributes to better organisational outcomes, and that the composition of the Charity’s leadership should be reflective of the diversity of Share’s student body.
Prospective Trustees must have a commitment to Share’s vision and values, and a passion for making a difference in the lives of disabled people. Share is keen to encourage applications from:
- Individuals with strong financial credentials, ideally a Chartered Accountant, who will sit on our Finance Sub-Committee
- An HR professional, who will sit on our HR and Safety Sub-Committee
We are particularly keen to encourage applications from groups currently under represented on the Board, including people who have lived experience of disability or of caring for someone with a disability, and those from minoritised ethnic backgrounds.
You don’t have to have been a trustee before – we are a welcoming, supportive team and will help you to succeed whether you’re a first-time Trustee or you have extensive experience.
