Role summary

As a Community Support Volunteer, you will play an important role in the Compassionate Communities programme by helping people talk about death and dying, grief and loss as well as raising awareness about St Helena Hospice services. We believe that breaking down taboos and getting people talking is key in helping communities support each other.

Your role will involve:

· Offering a welcoming, supportive presence and a listening ear to allow people to engage in meaningful conversations around topics such as incurable illness, caregiving, dying and bereavement. This may include signposting to relevant community support or care provision.

· Establishing contacts within the community and building relationships

· Supporting St Helena in informal sessions or larger events that may be held in community groups, charities, cafes or other organisations.

· Helping to promote Compassionate Communities principles and the work of St Helena in a positive, accessible way. See here for more information on our compassionate community principles Compassionate Communities | St Helena Hospice

· Connecting with St Helena staff and partners before and after events to give feedback and receive support

· Assisting with basic event logistics such as setting up spaces, offering refreshments, distributing materials, and collecting informal feedback.

Training & supervision

· Online mandatory training relevant to the role

· Compassionate Conversations training – online/in person

· Dedicated line manager for training and support with regular meetings

Experience & qualifications required

· Experience in a role involving interaction with the public, especially in a supportive or listening capacity

· Understanding of the importance of compassion and empathy when discussing sensitive topics

· Ability to maintain personal and professional boundaries

· Comfortable speaking with people from a wide range of backgrounds

Become a Community Discharge Support Service Volunteer and help someone get back on their feet when they come home from hospital.

What do Community Support Volunteers do?

Our friendly Community Support Volunteers visit people when they have come home from hospital, typically once a week for 4 – 6 weeks.

At a time when people are recovering and really appreciate a bit of extra help you could be supporting with shopping and light housework. But it’s often the company and encouragement of our volunteers that is appreciated the most as we check in and chat!

By doing this we help with recovery and reduce the chance of readmission to hospital.

You can also help from our office in Aylesbury  by making welfare and check in calls with our clients and helping to arrange these visits.

What is expected of me?

Community Support Volunteers are expected to visit each client once a week for up to 6 weeks.

These visits are flexible, based on your availability.

Our office support volunteers are asked to help for 1 – 2 hours a week.

Volunteers complete a short relevant training session and provide references.

We are seeking organised, reliable, and driven volunteers to support with our person-centred community mental health services. Volunteers will support group activities and sessions, and provide 1-1 support to community members.

Through free, accessible, and local activities, courses, and groups, we support members in building confidence, re-connecting with their communities, and progressing along their own path to wellbeing and recovery. Volunteers are vital to ensuring this support is personal, meaningful, and consistent.

 Community Support

The Community Support Volunteer role is part of Mind in Camden’s wider group services, including the Healthy Minds Community Programme and Phoenix Recovery Service. These services work with adults (18+) living in Camden who may be experiencing mental health challenges, isolation, or social exclusion. 

Healthy Minds is a community programme of free activities such as creative workshops, gentle exercise, walks, cultural trips, and social drop-ins. The programme aims to tackle social isolation by allowing members to build confidence and community through connection and shared interest. 

Phoenix Recovery Service is a day service supporting members’ mental health recovery who may have complex or long-term challenges.  The service is delivered in partnership with Camden Council and runs on a Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday at Mind in Camden. This is a relaxed social space where members chat, have lunch, and can get 1-1 support from staff and volunteers. 

All volunteers who apply must be willing to:

• Undergo a DBS check
• Attend a mandatory two day in person training on Monday 21st and Wednesday 23rd September 2026 at Mind in Camden
• Attend an interview (time TBD)

Mission Statement

Age UK Plymouth exists to care for and work with older people, those living with dementia and their carers in and around the City of Plymouth to improve their quality of life through the promotion of choice, opportunity and independence.

The Role

To support the Information and Advice Team in delivering free, confidential and independent information and advice services within community settings across Plymouth.

The Information and Advice Community Volunteer will assist Information and Advice Community Caseworkers in delivering outreach information and advice services to  people aged 50+ across Plymouth, with a focus on reaching individuals who may face barriers to accessing support due to deprivation, social isolation, poor transport links, health inequalities or digital exclusion.

The role is community-based and involves assisting Information and Advice Community Caseworkers in the delivery of outreach information and advice services within community venues across Plymouth.

Main Duties

· Assist Information and Advice Community Caseworkers in the delivery of community outreach information and advice sessions across Plymouth.

· Welcome and assist individuals attending outreach sessions, helping to create a friendly, inclusive and supportive environment.

· Support Information and Advice Community Caseworkers with client registration, appointment booking, administration and session set-up as required.

· Provide basic information about Age UK Plymouth services and assist individuals to access appropriate support.

· Identify individuals who may benefit from further information and advice support and refer them to an Information and Advice Community Caseworker.

· Assist with the distribution of information materials, leaflets and promotional resources.

· Support Information and Advice Community Caseworkers to engage with older people who may be isolated or experience barriers to accessing services.

· Record basic information and service user feedback as required.

· Promote awareness of Age UK Plymouth services within local communities.

· Maintain confidentiality and comply with Age UK Plymouth policies and procedures at all times.

· Attend training, supervision sessions and volunteer meetings as required.

· Work positively with staff, volunteers and partner organisations to support the delivery of high-quality services.

· Act as an ambassador for Age UK Plymouth and uphold the charity's values at all times.

· To comply with the Charity's Health & Safety policies and other relevant policies and procedures as contained in the Volunteer Handbook and operational guidelines.

· To undertake lone working only where authorised and in accordance with Age UK Plymouth's Lone Working Policy and associated risk assessments.

· To assist and participate in Age UK Plymouth promotional, engagement and profile-raising activities.

· To uphold and promote Age UK Plymouth's Equality & Diversity Policy and ensure effective implementation in all aspects of service delivery.

· To ensure the requirements of Data Protection legislation are complied with when carrying out the duties of the role.

· To undertake such other reasonable volunteering duties as may be appropriate to the role and agreed with the Volunteer Coordinator or Line Manager.

This is a flexible role, with the opportunity to volunteer either virtually or in your local community. We are looking for volunteers able to offer a minimum commitment of 2 hours per month. 

We’re looking for people who are passionate about Sense’s work to support disabled people with complex needs and who have a calm, kind and friendly personality.

Please note that you will not be providing care for the people Sense supports as part of this role.

Due to the nature of the volunteer role, we cannot accept applications for anyone under the age of 18.

The four areas of the role:

As a Community Champion, you’ll have the opportunity to take part in a variety of activities, organised into four main role categories. • Able to follow branding and messaging guidelines.
• Self-motivated and proactive in seeking opportunities. 

Fundraising researcher:

Help boost Sense’s regional income by researching available grants, partnerships and other local connections. Responsibilities include:

• Researching local grants and business partnerships.
• Researching networking events.
• Helping us to source prizes for Sense fundraising events.

Skills needed:

• Self-motivated, with the ability to work independently.
• Organised, ensuring new leads are accurately recorded and shared. 

Community connector:

Act as an ambassador for Sense, attending events across your community to thank supporters, and forge new partnerships.

• Attending cheque presentations, thanking our supporters.
• Giving presentations about Sense to local schools and community groups.
• Engaging with local businesses and groups, to forge new relationships for Sense.

Skills needed:

• Strong communication skills and enjoys public speaking opportunities.
• Well-connected in their local area, and love engaging with people.

Samaritans is looking for an enthusiastic and proactive Fundraising Events Admin Volunteer to support our busy Community and Events Team. Your support will help us raise the vital funds needed to ensure people can access emotional support whenever they need it most.

What is the role?

As a Fundraising Events Admin Volunteer, you will play a key role in helping our team focus on delivering successful fundraising events and supporting our incredible fundraisers. From managing enquiries to sending out fundraising materials, you’ll help keep everything running smoothly behind the scenes.

This is a fantastic opportunity to gain hands-on experience in events, fundraising, marketing, and supporter stewardship while making a meaningful difference.

• Support our Third-Party Events (TPE) fundraisers, taking part in events like London Marathon, Great North Run and Paris Marathon as well as fundraisers who take part in primarily virtual events, such as Dawn Walk and our Dog Walking Challenge.

Key responsibilities

• Support the Community and Events team to help us deliver our successful fundraising events and stewardship.
• Support our do your own thing (DYOT) and events fundraisers.
• Support with moderation and creating content to make our Stream for Samaritans, Discord server a warm and welcoming place.

• Enthusiasm and passion for community and events fundraising
• Excellent organisation skills and attention to detail
• Personable, approachable and able to develop relationships with a wide range of individuals

Time commitment

Ideally we would like the successful candidate to support us one day a week (Monday to Thursday), but we can be flexible with this depending on the work required within the team and the needs of the candidate

About the role:

As a community champion volunteer you’ll be supporting Sense’s fundraising team, playing a vital role in helping Sense to raise funds and awareness to support people with complex disabilities. 

You’ll engage with individuals, local businesses, and regional press to share our mission, organise events, and inspire others to take action. Whether you’re great at planning events, researching opportunities or connecting with your community, this role has something for you.  

This is a flexible role, with the opportunity to volunteer either virtually or in your local community. We are looking for volunteers able to offer a minimum commitment of 2 hours per month. 

We’re looking for people who are passionate about Sense’s work to support disabled people with complex needs and who have a calm, kind and friendly personality.

Please note that you will not be providing care for the people Sense supports as part of this role.

Due to the nature of the volunteer role, we cannot accept applications for anyone under the age of 18.

The four areas of the role:

As a Community Champion, you’ll have the opportunity to take part in a variety of activities, organised into four main role categories. You can choose to get involved in one or more of these areas, and we’ll discuss your preferences with you as part of the application process. Please note, we don’t expect volunteers to take on every area. Instead, we’ll focus on what interests you most and shape the role around your strengths and skills.

Event volunteer:

Support Sense’s Community Fundraising team by:

• Organising your own fundraising events in aid of Sense.
• Supporting and participating in fundraising events at your local Sense services, and shops.
• Supporting with fundraising admin, for example sourcing prizes for Sense fundraisers.

Skills needed:

• Creative, with fresh fundraising ideas and enthusiasm.
• Organised, with the ability help co-ordinate multiple aspects of an event.

Local public relations (PR) volunteer:

Boost Sense’s profile in your local community by:

• Writing content for local press releases.
• Building a network of local media contacts.
• Supporting regional output of national campaigns. 

Skills needed:

• Strong written communication
• Able to follow branding and messaging guidelines.
• Self-motivated and proactive in seeking opportunities. 

Fundraising researcher:

Help boost Sense’s regional income by researching available grants, partnerships and other local connections. Responsibilities include:

• Researching local grants and business partnerships.
• Researching networking events.
• Helping us to source prizes for Sense fundraising events.

Skills needed:

• Self-motivated, with the ability to work independently.
• Organised, ensuring new leads are accurately recorded and shared. 

Community connector:

Act as an ambassador for Sense, attending events across your community to thank supporters, and forge new partnerships.

• Attending cheque presentations, thanking our supporters.
• Giving presentations about Sense to local schools and community groups.
• Engaging with local businesses and groups, to forge new relationships for Sense.

Skills needed:

• Strong communication skills and enjoys public speaking opportunities.
• Well-connected in their local area, and love engaging with people.
