Our charity shop in the heart of SW17 7TW is looking for a friendly volunteer to join our team and help make our shop a huge success. Make new friends, have fun, and help us help more animals!

As a volunteer Charity Shop Assistant, you would join a small team working with the shop manager and 1-2 other volunteers to help make it a success and raise vital funds for animal welfare.

About Our Charity Shop

The shop plays an essential role in raising the profile of the RSPCA in our local community and funds for our branch so that we can continue our vital animal welfare work. Our shops sell a mixture of donated items, including clothes, books, bric-a-brac and collectables, and a selection of new items. We have positions available on the shop floor and in our stock room or you could volunteer to do a mixture of both.

Volunteer Charity Shop Assistant responsibilities

• Helping customers in the shop find what they need.
• Accepting donations of items and money from the public.
• Processing sales through the till and card machine, including Gift Aid.
• Sorting through donated items to determine what we can sell.
• Preparing donated items for sale by steaming and hanging and items.
• Merchandising stock on the shop floor.
• Creating attractive shop window displays.

What we are looking for in a volunteer Charity Shop Assistant

• Friendly volunteers who are confident talking to people.
• Retail experience would be ideal but is not necessary as full training will be given.
• We are ideally aiming for someone who is flexible and can offer an ongoing commitment.
• Good communication and numeracy skills.
• You will need to be aged 16 or over.

RSPCA Middlesbrough, Teesside & District Branch

We are looking for a Branch Trustee to help us manage the Middlesbrough, Teesside and District Branch. As a Trustee you will be a full and equal member of our leadership team, making strategies, decisions deciding what we focus on, how we raise and spend money, organising events, working as a team to improve animal welfare in our community.

WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING?

Trustees manage the charity. Like any organisation we get involved in people, finance and legal topics, making strategies and assessing which projects to support, tracking progress on animal welfare programs, working with local vets to offer more support out of hours, or making sure our volunteers are well managed and motivated. More importantly, we focus on raising funds, managing volunteers and spending money where it is needed to support animals in our community - YOUR community. So, whatever your background or skills there is a role you can play.

You will hold the organisation accountable, ensure compliance and be an ambassador, promoting the good work we do and encouraging our teams to continue their efforts to support animal welfare.

You may be an experienced Trustee or new to the role (we can help with training). You will have leadership experience gained in any sector and a passion for animal welfare. You will bring the ability to lead people, motivate teams and manage change. You will be able to understand complex topics, ask logical questions and be willing to hold an organisation accountable for fulfilling its responsibilities. You will be willing to roll up your sleeves and get stuck into the details, make decisions and speak up.

You will be a full part of the team leading this charity. Your voice will be heard and you will help guide the charity and decide its direction. You’ll have the opportunity to be part of a dynamic team, build something new and really make your mark. Together we can make a huge impact on animal welfare in our community.

Volunteer Opportunity: Squirrels Section Volunteer

Location: URC Baker Street, Alvaston
When: Mondays, 1 hour per week, 4.30pm-5.30pm

Do you have an hour to spare on a Monday and a willingness to make a big difference to young children? We’re looking for friendly volunteers to join our Squirrels team and help support our weekly sessions.

About Squirrels

Squirrels is the youngest section of Scouts, designed for children aged 4–6. Sessions are fun, active, and varied… from crafts and games to simple challenges that build confidence, teamwork, and curiosity about the world.

The Role

As a Squirrels Volunteer, you’ll support the session leaders during our weekly one hour meetings. Typical tasks include:

• Helping small groups of children take part in activities
• Offering encouragement and gentle guidance
• Supporting games, crafts, and simple challenges
• Helping create a safe, welcoming, and fun environment

You won’t be expected to plan sessions or lead activities, unless you’d like to! This role is all about support and teamwork.

Art Explora is a non-profit arts organisation that aims to share arts and culture with everyone - locally, nationally and internationally - and inspire new encounters between arts and audiences.

Arts at Home supports older people to access arts and culture by encouraging conversation and connection through art. We are looking for volunteers to participate in our "Arts at Home" sessions in residential care homes. In these sessions, you will introduce works of art of your choice and facilitate conversations around the artworks with residents. No prior professional experience is needed; we will provide you with the necessary training.

You will need to be able to travel to Birmingham locations independently (pre agreed local travel expenses paid).

Why do we need your help?

Food banks provide three-day emergency food parcels for people in crisis, working in partnership with organisations across the community. Drivers play a fundamental role in the running of the food bank, collecting food donations from a variety of locations such as supermarkets or churches across the local area as well as distributing the sorted donations from the warehouse to the local food bank centres. You will be given all the required training and provided with ongoing support and development opportunities. You will also have a main contact at the food bank throughout your time volunteering with us.

What will you be doing?

• Collecting food donations from collection points such as supermarkets, schools and churches within Brent

• Coordinating with the warehouse manager and supermarket community champions

• Delivering the food donations to the warehouse, located in Willesden

• Transporting sorted food from the warehouse across two food banks within Brent

• Regular loading and unloading of vehicles, helping your driver buddy

• Regular driving across the local area

The skills you need:

• Clean and current driving licence

• Physically strong and capable of carrying heavy boxes of canned foods

• Experienced and confident driver, you will be driving a small van around Brent

• Adaptable and flexible, sometimes we need to change your driving route or times

• Personable and committed, you will be the representatives of Brent Foodbank amongst our supermarket community

• You will need to follow the driving policy of the food bank

• You should enjoy being part of a volunteer team

• Have an eye for detail and be able to solve problems

What is a Publicity Coordinator?

Publicity Coordinators work with other branch volunteers to develop a Publicity Plan to raise awareness of SSAFA that reaches potential beneficiaries, volunteers, and funders.

Why do we need you?

We’ve been supporting the Armed Forces community since 1885. Our beneficiaries come from all walks of life and may have served in WW2 or in a more recent conflict like the Falklands or Afghanistan. We’d love the general public to understand what we do and how they can help us. We need to recruit volunteers that reflect our local communities and raise money to fund our work. Could you spare a few hours a week to help us raise awareness?

There are SSAFA branches throughout the UK and overseas who support local volunteers to deliver services to veterans, serving personnel and their families. Some branches are divided into smaller divisions to ensure the best local service delivery. Each branch has a team of volunteer caseworkers, support volunteers, executive roles, and fundraisers.

When would you be needed and where would you be based?

This role is about building awareness so beneficiaries know who we are and how they can benefit from and access support, promoting volunteer opportunities and encourage people to raise finds and celebrate success. This means that on occasions, you might need to be present at events. As part of your local branch, you might have access to an office, but you can conduct the administration part of this role form home.

What would you be doing?

• Working with other branch volunteers to develop a publicity plan.
• Publicising SSAFA events.
• Work with Marketing/PR staff at central office to develop case studies of clients and volunteers and ensure that SSAFA branding and messaging are consistent.
• Develop and maintain networks with local press, TV and radio outlets through providing press releases, interviews, case studies etc.
• Working with the Digital Team at Central Office to develop and maintain a local on-line presence for the branch via a website and social media channels.
• Keeping a stock of SSAFA publicity materials and distributing them
• Liaising with PR staff at central office or on-call in the event of a PR/press situation.
• Supporting local and national campaigns to recruit new volunteers.
• Being a positive ambassador for SSAFA including all sections of the community in awareness raising
• Adhering to SSAFAs policies and procedures at all times, including safeguarding, volunteering policy, equality, diversity and inclusion, health and safety, data protection and confidentiality.

The remit of this role may change over the next 12-18 months depending on the outcome of a trial currently being undertaken.

• marketing. Spreading the word about our fundraising activities, for example on social media and with the local press
• completing administration. Processing donations, sorting and recording donated goods, completing Gift Aid paperwork
• championing our work. Getting involved with developing new fundraising ideas and increasing community engagement
• photography. Capturing images of cats in care, cats we are helping, events and all things Cats Protection
• You’ll need to be aged 18+ to volunteer in this role. If you’re aged 16-17, you’ll need to be supervised by a friend, family member, or guardian over the age of 18 in order to carry out any fundraising activity.

This is a flexible role that can fit around your other commitments to suit you. You’ll be part of a team raising vital funds while having fun in the process!

What we need from you

This is a really flexible role. We’ll help you choose what you’d like to get involved with, making sure it benefits both you and the team, for example: 

• supporting the team to maintain high standards of cat welfare
• transporting cats to vet appointments or to new homes
• entering records for cats and cat-related activity to track the impact of the team
• supporting with cat admissions and matching cats with prospective owners
• ordering, collecting and delivering cat-related supplies, for example, food, litter, medical supplies
• communicating with the public, offering support with cat ownership or lost and found cats
• supporting the volunteer neutering team

Time expectation

Our Cat Welfare Support volunteers typically volunteer for two to four hours per week. This role is flexible and can fit around your other commitments.

Do you have a passion for African and Diaspora history and a vision for empowering communities through knowledge? Tell My Truth and Shame the Devil C.I.C. is seeking a dynamic Book Club Coordinator (African & Diaspora History Lead) to join our founding volunteer team. This role is central to curating, facilitating, and promoting a transformative learning space that nurtures understanding, critical thinking, and cultural pride for survivors, young people, and community members.

As Book Club Coordinator, you will design, manage, and facilitate a structured book club programme focused on African and Diaspora history, literature, and thought leadership. You will work closely with the Membership Director and Community Engagement Manager to ensure the club fosters critical reflection, inclusive discussion, and actionable learning. This role combines operational coordination, educational facilitation, and community engagement, offering a unique opportunity to impact knowledge sharing and collective empowerment.

Experience Qualification and Requirements

Essential / Highly Valued Experience

• Strong knowledge of African and Diaspora history, literature, political thought, and cultural movements
• Experience in facilitation, teaching, programme coordination, or group learning environments
• Excellent communication, storytelling, and group leadership skills
• Ability to engage diverse participants in respectful, inclusive, and meaningful dialogue
• Confidence holding complex conversations around history, power, identity, and resistance
• Ability to motivate participation and sustain group energy over time
• Strong organisational skills, including session planning and follow-up
• Ability to document discussions and translate insights into learning outcomes
• Experience working in community, grassroots, or culturally rooted spaces
• Commitment to collective learning, cultural integrity, and community-centred education
• Reliability, consistency, and a collaborative approach to programme delivery

Desirable / Can Be Developed

• Competence with digital tools for scheduling, virtual engagement, and content sharing (e.g. video platforms, shared documents, community spaces)

Qualifications

• Formal qualifications in history, education, cultural studies, or related fields are welcome but not required; equivalent professional or lived experience is equally valued

Main Responsibilities/ Key Duties

• Curate reading lists and learning materials: Develop thoughtful, accessible reading lists focused on African and Diaspora history, literature, political thought, and cultural movements. Select texts that reflect diverse geographies, time periods, and perspectives, balancing academic depth with community accessibility.
• Plan and facilitate book club sessions: Organise, schedule, and lead regular book club sessions in both online and in-person formats. Design session structures that support preparation, discussion flow, and inclusive participation. Create a welcoming environment that encourages shared learning rather than hierarchical instruction.
• Lead critical discussion and reflection: Facilitate informed, respectful, and challenging conversations that encourage participants to analyse texts critically, reflect on historical and contemporary relevance, and apply learning to personal, collective, or organisational contexts.
• Participant engagement and learning tracking: Monitor attendance, participation levels, and learning outcomes to assess engagement and identify opportunities for improvement. Adapt facilitation approaches based on participant feedback and group dynamics.
• Coordinate guest contributors: Identify, invite, and coordinate guest speakers, authors, historians, or subject matter experts whose lived experience or expertise enhances discussion and deepens understanding of selected themes.
• Digital collaboration and engagement: Work with digital teams to support virtual sessions, share reading materials, discussion prompts, and supplementary content. Encourage ongoing dialogue through online platforms between sessions.
• Documentation and programme development: Capture key discussion points, insights, and participant feedback. Contribute to reflective summaries and recommendations that inform future reading selections and programme development.
• Link to wider CIC initiatives: Align book club themes with broader CIC educational goals, membership programming, and community initiatives. Support the integration of learning into collective practice, leadership development, and cultural programming.
