Founded in 1879, Together for Mental Wellbeing is the longest-established mental health charity in England. We work to ensure that everyone who experiences mental distress is valued, can live the life they choose and can determine their own future.
What we do
Together for Mental Wellbeing is a national charity that supports people who experience mental distress to lead fulfilling and independent lives.
We work with approximately 4,500 people every month via 70 projects throughout England, but we aspire to reach many more people through our recently refreshed five-year strategy.
Our services include:
- personalised support in the community
- accommodation based support
- advocacy services, including in secure hospitals
- criminal justice services, including in courts and probation services

The opportunity
We wish to add new trustees to our Board and have identified some recruitment priorities:
- We are seeking at least one individual with lived experience of mental distress who can draw on their unique knowledge and insights as to how mental distress impacts on people’s lives, and share their passion and enthusiasm to drive the aspirations of the organisation.
Our approach is for the individual to determine whether or not they have lived experience of mental distress. One person’s lived experience is no more or less important than another’s.
- We wish to increase the gender diversity of our leadership at Together; we currently have a high proportion of men.
Having completed a recent Board skills audit we also encourage applicants with experience of the following areas:
- Human resources and workforce planning
- Forensic psychiatry
- Public sector procurement/contracting
- Knowledge of health and wellbeing service providers from the Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) sector
- Digital development and innovation
- Auditing and risk management
- Financial management and accounting
However, all applications are welcomed and will be considered. We also recognise that people are often juggling multiple commitments and can offer flexibility as to when you take up the role.
We offer a full induction, along with ongoing training and development opportunities. Although our trustees are unpaid volunteers all expenses related to the role will be paid in full.
Typically trustees will attend around 10 meetings per year, occasional virtual attendance is possible, and be invited to events and visits. With preparation time for meetings this can equate to a commitment of 1-2 days per month.

The Board of HelpAge International has a rich tradition of Trustees who are driven by their commitment and passion to ensuring the rights of older persons are upheld across the world. Serving on the Board of HelpAge offers Trustees a unique opportunity to support and help drive this cause at a global level. The position of Trustee at HelpAge International board is non- remunerative, and all the work that individual Trustees devote to the charity is done on an entirely voluntary basis.
The statutory duties of a Trustee:
HelpAge International is a registered charity in the UK. Under charity law, HelpAge International Trustees have the ultimate responsibility for directing the affairs of HelpAge International, ensuring that it is solvent, well-run and delivering the charitable outcomes for which it was established. In law, the Board of Trustees of HelpAge International have three particular duties – compliance, care and prudence.
Key desirable skills:
HelpAge is now looking to appoint a UK based trustee with expertise in strategic financial management, budgeting and risk management in an NGO setting along with knowledge of UK charity financial regulations and compliance.
Other desirable skills are as follows -
• Trusteeship in an organisation of similar or larger size, together with experience in the implementation of best practices in UK and/or international corporate governance.
• Areas of expertise relevant to HelpAge International’s mission and goals such as gerontology, age discrimination, demography, health, income security, pension policy, climate change, human rights, and gender equity
• Public policy formulation and influencing techniques across parliaments and national assemblies.
• Service provision or policy development at a senior level to older people.
• International development and/or humanitarian assistance at strategic level, particularly planning and delivery of services, governance structures, and financial management.
• Experience working with/in/for networks.
• Active role in/links with academia.
• Influence and links with global humanitarian organisations/networks/policy makers.
• Links/connections with corporate sector and the silver/grey economy.

Time Commitment
The Board of Trustees meets four times a year. 3 of the meetings are for half a day every quarter and are held on line. The 4th meeting is usually a 2 day face to face meeting which takes place in a country where there are partner organisations or network members. Trustees may have to factor in significant travel time, dependent on the location.
Trustees typically devote more time than just the Board meetings; staying connected to the cause of HelpAge International, learning about it and advocating for older persons. Board Trustees are encouraged to be members of at least one Board sub-Committee. Trustees whose current careers are not already steeped in ageing issues often find it is useful to spend time outside of the Board and Board Committee meetings, familiarising themselves with and staying abreast of current population ageing issues.
Board Members are also ‘ambassadors’ of HelpAge International. As such, from time to time they may be called upon to represent the organisation in forums taking place in their region.
HelpAge International’s Support for Trustees
HelpAge International is committed to ensuring each Trustee is given adequate access to the information and tools s/he needs to be an effective Board Trustee. As such, HelpAge ensures that every new trustee is introduced to the organisation through an appropriate and supportive induction process.
In addition, senior staff members of the organisation are a valuable knowledge resource on ageing matters/issues, and the organisational culture is such that opportunities for interaction between senior staff and Trustees are easily arranged. HelpAge also actively encourages those Trustees who wish to attend specific workshops and seminars in order to improve their effectiveness as Board Trustees.

The Audit and Probity Committee reports directly to CIMSPA’s Board of Trustees and is a crucial part of our governance structure, overseeing our risk landscape. By ensuring that risk is adequately managed and that the organisation is governed with integrity, the committee guides CIMSPA’s strategic decision-making processes. Alongside this, the committee provides oversight, challenge and scrutiny across a range of areas, including our internal controls and our financial performance and management.

Nova is a charity that works with charities, community groups and social enterprises to help them thrive and continue their important work across the District. We do this by:
- Providing free specialist support on development and growth
- Ensuring the VCSE sector has a voice in decision-making
- Securing resources and funding for the VCSE sector
We have several opportunities open to join our Board of Trustees, including a Treasurer.
The Treasurer works closely with the Board, CEO, Finance Manager, and accountant to ensure our organisation’s finances are well-managed, transparent, and aligned with strategic goals. This involves:
- Guiding financial decisions
- Helping the Board understand and act on financial information
- Contributing to planning for the future, including budgets, reserves and exploring new incomes streams and enterprising approaches to strengthen Nova’s financial resilience
While previous experience as a Treasurer or Trustee is welcomed, it’s not essential. What matters most is commitment to Nova’s values, financial integrity, and supporting the VCSE sector.
As a trustee, you’ll have:

Harrison and Potter Trust is a Leeds-based charity supporting people to live well. We have almshouses on Lovell Park Road and Raglan Road, and offer safe and secure housing. What will you be doing?
As governor, trustee and director, you will have an active role in setting strategic direction and overseeing the educational performance, management and financial health of the school and the charity.
We are particularly looking for individuals with a background in residential care or safeguarding as well as those who have experience in the areas of deaf education and finance. We will however consider applications from those with a passion for what we do who do not have any of these areas of expertise, and especially those with prior trustee experience, will be actively considered.
Most governor/trustees attend two or three meetings a term, generally Monday to Friday during the working day, either online or in person. Additionally, visits into school are organised on a termly basis. Each term of office is for four years and can be renewed twice.
