CARIS Families (registered charity name CARIS Camden, charity number 1121919) is a small frontline charity that runs support services for homeless children and their parents living in temporary accommodation hostels in the London Boroughs of Camden and Hackney.
Families can find themselves homeless for many reasons. They may be displaced as part of the refugee resettlement process. They may be fleeing domestic violence or suffering the fallout of relationship breakdown. They may have simply found themselves priced out of the rental market and lost their home as a result. With affordable housing and social tenancies increasingly scarce, many children and their parents live in this state of limbo for years on end. The hostel, in effect, becomes the childhood home, making ‘temporary accommodation’ anything but temporary.
CARIS Families' frontline mission is twofold: to improve families' day-to-day experiences while in temporary accommodation and to assist them to move out of homelessness as soon as possible. We improve day-to-day experiences by providing hostel-based services for families that put back opportunities for children to thrive and that support parental wellbeing. At the same time, we casework with parents to progress their housing case so the family can move on into a settled home as soon as possible. In 2025 we supported 108 families and 146 children with play and learning opportunities, school holiday activities, family support work, poverty relief work and housing casework.
In addition to our frontline work, we contribute data and learned experience from our frontline work to academic research and political campaigning with the aim of bringing about reform of harmful temporary accommodation practises, and we support our families to share their lived experience.
Our turnover in 2024 was £238,555, with the majority of our income coming from trust and foundation grants, of which 4 are multi-year grants. We do not currently receive any statutory funding. Please find out more on the Charity Commission website at: CARIS CAMDEN - 1121919
Current context
We currently have a board of eight trustees and would like to increase the capacity of the board to match our growth, as we expand our hostel reach, family casework and public profile in the campaigns arena.
We have a Director, a staff team of six and a small cohort of volunteers who deliver our services within the family hostels and further afield. We have a broad support base with the significant impact and value of work recognised by our partners.
Roles
We have completed a Trustees skill audit and the following areas were identified as priority skills and expertise needed to support the development of our work:

Expectations for Trustees
Trustees play a vital role in ensuring the charity is well‑governed, sustainable, and delivering meaningful impact. As a trustee, you will be expected to:

Attend all Trustees meetings. Currently this consists of four meetings per annum, which generally alternate between online delivery and in-person in central London.

Attend at least one session of delivery with our staff team each year.

Who they are
Bookmark Reading Charity was established in 2018 with a clear and simple vision: that every child should be able to read. In England, one in four children leave primary school unable to read at the expected standard. Bookmark works to improve children’s literacy by fostering a culture of reading for pleasure in primary schools, with a particular focus on supporting children in the most disadvantaged communities.
The role
Bookmark Reading Charity exists to change children’s life stories through the joy of reading.
In a typical year, one in four children in an average class will leave primary school unable to read well. These children often struggle throughout their education and later in life and are at risk of becoming part of the seven million adults in the UK who face daily challenges with basic reading. Literacy extends far beyond books: it affects the ability to read road signs, safety instructions, job applications, medical prescriptions, and everyday communications. Children from disadvantaged backgrounds are disproportionately affected; four in ten children eligible for free school meals are unable to read well by the age of 11. Poor literacy is closely linked to reduced employment opportunities, poorer health outcomes, low self-esteem, and even reduced life expectancy.
Bookmark’s ambition is for every child to read.
As a leading reading charity for primary school children, Bookmark partners with schools to develop whole-school reading cultures and deliver one-to-one reading support. Through a flexible, volunteer-led programme, children gain the reading skills and confidence they need to have a fair chance in life. Bookmark has delivered the first year of its three-year strategy and is working towards partnering with 1,000 primary schools, enabling 500,000 children to benefit from a Bookmark literacy programme. Through the support of its Trustees, the charity aims to change the stories of the children who need it most.

Time commitment
Trustees are expected to commit approximately 10 hours per month. The Board meets four times a year, either in person in central London or remotely, with additional sub-committee or advisory board meetings held two to four times per year. Trustees may also be involved in specific projects aligned to their skills and interests and represent the charity at key events and meetings.
Trustees are appointed for a three-year term and may be reappointed. The role is unpaid, though reasonable expenses are reimbursed in line with the charity’s expenses policy.

Spurgeons is one of the UK’s leading children’s charities, supporting vulnerable and disadvantaged children and their families for 150 years. Inspired by Christian faith and our founder Charles Spurgeon, we’re here for all families. Together, we create family hubs where we’re needed most, with counselling, early years and family support. What will you be doing?
As governor, trustee and director, you will have an active role in setting strategic direction and overseeing the educational performance, management and financial health of the school and the charity.
We are particularly looking for individuals with a background in residential care or safeguarding as well as those who have experience in the areas of deaf education and finance. We will however consider applications from those with a passion for what we do who do not have any of these areas of expertise, and especially those with prior trustee experience, will be actively considered.
Most governor/trustees attend two or three meetings a term, generally Monday to Friday during the working day, either online or in person. Additionally, visits into school are organised on a termly basis. Each term of office is for four years and can be renewed twice.

Trustees are appointed by the Nominations Committee with representation from the Youth Advisory Board. Job Description
The Board meets 4–6 times a year for up to two hours, with an additional annual Away Day. Meetings are held both virtually and in person. We use an online portal to share papers and reports.
Trustees are expected to:

·attend up to two events per year
The time commitment is approximately one day per month on average, occasionally higher at key points in the year.

About the Role

Trustee vacancy - Youth Development / Education Specialist
The National Youth Orchestra (NYO) is appointing a specialist trustee to strengthen our Board’s insight into what helps teenagers flourish through exceptional arts and music opportunities.

The Safeguarding Trustee provides strategic leadership and assurance on all aspects of safeguarding across GFS. They ensure that the Board of Trustees fulfils its collective duty to protect all children, young people, and adults at risk who come into contact with GFS’s activities. Working closely with the Chair, CEO, and Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSL), this trustee champions a proactive safeguarding culture built on trust, transparency, and accountability. Key Responsibilities:
- Ensuring that the values and mission of GFS are upheld in all of the decisions and decision-making processes of the Board.
- Contributing actively to the Board’s discussions on the strategic plans for GFS and supporting the Leadership Team to implement them.
- Lead the Board’s responsibility for safeguarding and ensure statutory and regulatory obligations are met.
- Review, approve, and monitor safeguarding policies, ensuring they are updated regularly and effectively implemented.
- Provide assurance that safeguarding risks are identified, managed, and escalated appropriately.
- Offer informed scrutiny and constructive challenge to ensure safeguarding remains a strategic priority.
- Receive regular updates from the DSL and senior leadership, and report key issues and learning to the Board.
- Promote awareness, understanding, and accountability for safeguarding across the organisation, including among volunteers and trustees.
- Keep up to date with safeguarding developments, legislation, and best practice in the charity and youth sectors.
- Act as a visible ambassador for safeguarding, attending relevant committees, events, or training sessions as required.
Time Committment
- Board Members serve an initial three-year term and are eligible for reappointment for an additional term.
- Three Virtual Board meetings and an in person in either in Central London or a central city (meetings are currently held on Saturdays).
- Occasional strategy days, workshops or working groups. Quarterly Sub - Committee membership depending on skills and capacity.
- Regular liaison with the Chair and DSL (typically 3–4 times per year).

The Team Safeguarding Officer plays a vital role in building a strong safeguarding culture across our 16 churches. They are the key link between the central Safeguarding Team, local clergy and churches concerning safeguarding matters. They will have an overview of all church activities involving children, young people and vulnerable adults, working closely with Parish Safeguarding Officers to implement safeguarding policy.
The key aspects of the role are:
• Safeguarding point of contact: Respond well to safeguarding concerns or disclosures and, with the Team Rector or Team Vicars as appropriate, refer them to the Diocesan Safeguarding Team and relevant statutory agencies.
• DBS and training oversight: Ensure staff and volunteers have up-to-date DBS checks and safeguarding training recorded and monitored within the Safeguarding Hub.
• Promote good practice: Uphold Church of England safeguarding policies and guidance
• Trustee engagement: Keep the Team Council and PCC (Parochial Church Council) members informed about safeguarding developments and risks.
• Compliance and safer recruitment: Use online tools such as Safeguarding Hubs and Dashboards to support compliance.
The role of the Team Safeguarding Officer does not need to be fulfilled by one individual and instead could be shared, with one person taking an outward facing lead (e.g. named point of contact) and another focussing on administrative functions (e.g. managing DBS and training)

The Eve Appeal is the leading gynaecological cancer charity. There are five gynae cancers, which are womb, ovarian, cervical, vulval and vaginal cancer. Our aim is to prevent gynae cancers from developing in the first place, but if they do develop, we want to make sure they’re detected early so more people survive their diagnosis.
To make our goals a reality, we fund research in four key areas: uncovering the causes of gynae cancers, predicting a person’s risk of developing them, identifying how people can reduce their risk, and improving their detection and diagnosis.
We educate; we increase awareness and we provide free confidential and expert information through our Ask Eve nurse service.

The role of trustees and the Treasurer
Being a trustee is a rewarding role. Trustees are volunteers who bring their expertise to shape our strategy and direction, and help ensure we remain an authoritative organisation on LGBTQI+ asylum and immigration. They have overall legal responsibility for the charity, make sure our finances and resources are well used to implement our mission, and are required to participate fully in the governance of the charity. Trustees also play a role as ambassadors for the organisation and our work.
The Treasurer takes a lead role in ensuring Rainbow Migration’s financial affairs are conducted within legal requirements, accounting conventions and good practice to ensure the financial viability and sustainable development of the organisation. Time commitment
We are looking for people who can commit to being a trustee for at least three years.
Trustees meet on a weekday evening five times per year. Meetings are usually held on Zoom except in December when we meet in person in London.
Preparation for the meetings involves a time commitment of two to four hours for detailed reading of papers, which are provided several days in advance.
The Treasurer also chairs the Finance Subcommittee, which meets on a weekday evening at the end of each quarter. The present Treasurer prepares the primary financial statements and notes, from the underlying accounting records at the year-end, for inclusion in the Annual Report and Accounts; the successful candidate will need to decide whether to continue with this approach or if there is a suitable alternative.
Key responsibilities
Financial oversight:
- Support the Trustee Board to maintain a clear and timely picture of the financial health of the organisation
- Ensure the Trustee Board and management team fulfil all required fiduciary and regulatory responsibilities
- Keep up to date on developments in charity finance regulations and best practice
- Chair the Finance Subcommittee to oversee Rainbow Migration’s financial management, ensuring robust processes and controls are in place
- Ensure the committee develops a long-term financial strategy (including a reserves policy) for the organisation, with objectives which can be monitored
- Advise the Board on financial strategy, risk management and resource allocation
- Support the Executive Director and Operations and Office Manager to develop and improve financial policies and procedures
- Work with the Executive Director, Operations and Office Manager and Fundraising Manager to monitor budgets, cash flow and financial performance
- Oversee the production of clear and accessible financial reports to the Board and its sub-committees by Rainbow Migration staff, and lead discussions during meetings
Reporting:
- Ensure regular financial reports (i.e. management accounts, annual budgets, cash flow projections, etc) are accurate, comprehensible, timely, correctly formatted, and properly discussed and understood by the Trustee Board (as required by law)
- Ensure the timely preparation of annual accounts in accordance with charity regulations (UK SORP)
- Oversee the appointment of the Independent Examiner or auditors and provide overall oversight of the annual examination or audit process
Systems and controls:
- Ensure the charity has proper systems in place for budgeting, financial control, insurance, and reporting
- Ensure compliance with all HMRC tax requirements, as appropriate

About the role?

About you

You will be engaged and motivated by the work of VoiceAbility and be able to build strong relationships and have experience of working as a non-Executive director or Trustee; however, lived experience is equally important.
We are seeking to recruit Trustees who bring Expertise in Finance, Safeguarding, Human Resources, Commercial and Operational Delivery.
Time commitment
Approximately one day per month. Please note that this time commitment will be spread across multiple days and is likely to be cyclical.
There are four board meetings per annum. Board meetings tend to be online, but face-to-face, or hybrid meetings may take place from time to time. There would also be a commitment of two to four committee meetings per annum, a board strategy or development day and site visits. Each trustee will also belong to at least one committee.
