Theatre volunteer roles

We are a Theatre Without Walls, have imagination without limits and exist to make extraordinary, relevant theatre by, with and for contemporary Scotland.

As we continue our journey, we are seeking to recruit at least two Non-Executive Directors who share our passion for theatre and the arts to support our collective responsibility to develop our vision and our people.

In line with our strategic framework, one of our priorities in the coming years is the development of our artistic programme at home and internationally.

We know that to achieve this, we will need to find new ways of working and continue to diversify our revenue, optimising the commercial and financial guidance the Board can offer.

We are also looking to maximise our strategic communications in this current fast-changing landscape, and considering how evolving technology can best extend our programming and reach, engaging learners, supporters and wider audiences. We are excited by the prospect of Board members who can support the governance requirements of this journey.

We also welcome a diversity of voices around the table, reflecting the audiences and communities we serve. Applications from divergent and collaborative thinkers from all walks of life are welcome and we strongly encourage applications from candidates of colour, gender diverse and disabled people.

Role Description

The role of a Non-Executive Director Board member is to ensure that: The National Theatre of Scotland, as a registered Charity fulfils its duty to its beneficiaries and delivers on its Vision, Mission and Values.
The statutory duties of a Non-Executive Director Board member are:

• To ensure that the company complies with its governing documents - Memorandum and Articles of Association.
• To ensure that the company pursues its objectives as defined in its governing document.
• To ensure that the company applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objectives - the company must not spend money on activities which are not included in its own objectives, no matter how ‘charitable’ and ‘worthwhile’ those activities are.
• To contribute actively to the Board's role in giving firm strategic direction to the company, setting overall policy, defining goals and setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets.
• To safeguard the reputation and values of the company.
• To ensure the effective and efficient operation and administration of the company.
• To ensure the financial stability of the company
• To protect and manage the property of the company and to ensure the proper investment 
  of the company’s funds.
• To appoint the Co-Chief Executive Officers and monitor their performance.

Remuneration: The role is voluntary, so there is no salary or payment for being on the Board but expenses for travel may be claimed.

Location: Board meetings take place in Rockvilla, our creation space located in Glasgow, and we strongly encourage attending these in person whenever possible. However, we absolutely welcome candidates from all over Scotland and beyond and can facilitate online attendance if required.

Time commitment:We have four Board meetings per year and up to four Committee meetings depending on the membership of the Committee. Committee membership is not a requirement to be a Board member, but on this occasion, we are seeking to appoint at least one new trustee to the Finance, Risk and Audit Committee.

Board members are also expected to see as much of the company’s work as possible including performances (tickets are provided) and events and to occasionally represent the company at these.

Eastern Angles is seeking a new Chair to lead our Board, working alongside our CEO in delivering our vision and achieving our mission with our three principles of Grow, Nourish and & Wonder. 

The Chair provides strategic leadership to the Board, working alongside the CEO to ensure that Eastern Angles’ vision goals are achieved with a continued view to the community.

As Chair, you will be a primary ambassador for Eastern Angles. We are looking for someone who has a clear and actionable plan for how they will help us grow as a company, particularly in line with our values.

We are particularly interested in hearing from those with experience in governance and facilitating fundraising efforts, ideally in a comparable context.

The position is voluntary and will be a four-year term, with the option to extend for up to a further four years.

We are seeking an experienced professional to volunteer as a Contract & Compliance Advisor. This role is ideal for someone with significant experience in law, compliance, procurement, or contract negotiation, who would like to use their expertise to support a values-led charity.

Key Responsibilities

• Review contracts, agreements, and supplier documentation
• Identify potential risks, liabilities, and areas requiring clarification
• Highlight key terms, conditions, and small print in clear, accessible language
• Provide guidance on compliance, procurement, and contractual best practice
• Support staff to understand contractual implications (non-legal advice)
• Offer input on negotiation points where appropriate

Stepping Stones Learning and Leisure is a small, friendly charity based in Southwark, providing inclusive activities for adults with learning disabilities. We’re currently looking for an enthusiastic and proactive Drama Class Volunteer to support our weekly Friday afternoon sessions (1.30-3.30), held at St Faith’s Community Centre, Red Post Hill, SE24 9JQ (close to North Dulwich and Herne Hill stations).

About The Role

We're looking for someone with a background in drama to support our tutor in delivering accessible and fun drama sessions for a small group of adults with learning disabilities. Each year, the group works towards a production which is performed at our end-of-year Summer Show, making this a fun, creative, and rewarding volunteering opportunity.

As a Drama Class Volunteer at Stepping Stones, you will:

• Encourage and support learners during rehearsals and performances
• Help with setting up props, costumes and resources for sessions
• Participate alongside learners where appropriate
• Offer 1:1 or group support where needed to help participants engage
• Help cultivate a warm, inclusive atmosphere where everyone feels safe to express themselves
• Offer creative input and feedback

• Commit to volunteering one session per week for 3 x 10 week terms throughout the year. For continuity for our service users, we would like you to commit to volunteering with us for one year.

Volunteers will be supporting people in their own homes and in the community within Nottingham and Nottinghamshire and ideally, we ask all applicants to provide a minimum of 1 hour volunteering a week.

The companion service volunteer can choose to be:                                                           

• A companion within the person’s home

• A companion outside the person’s home

Examples of the type of support the service offers include:

• Supporting an older person/s hobbies and interests or simply chatting with them in their own home on a regular basis.

• Supporting with digital access & building confidence skills & motivation to access the opportunities of the internet.

• Supporting the person outside of their home e.g., by accompanying them on a walk, to the shops, to a café, garden centre, theatre or cinema or other social activities / community groups. 

• Where appropriate, supporting the older person to access other services through information and signposting or referring to the Companion Service Coordinator for support.

About The Role

We’re looking for positive minded individuals who can bring joy and some theatre to Ice Cream sales whilst on the move on our electric trike at Martin Mere Wetland Centre.

Become the face (and wheels!) of Martin Mere Wetland Centre – a mobile, bike‑powered ice‑cream experience that pops up where the crowds are. You’ll steer one of our fully‑equipped electric bikes, to delight customers with ice cold refreshments and Ice-Creams. Use your entrepreneurial flair to maximise daily sales. Expect plenty of sunshine, spontaneous dance‑offs with kids, and the buzz of being on the move. 

Volunteers are an essential part of the WWT team. You’ll get a warm welcome, including information on training, equipment and anything else you need.

• Customer-facing experience: Previous experience in retail, hospitality, or customer service is highly beneficial.

• Numeracy and basic tech skills: Comfortable with handling cash, using card readers, and potentially using POS apps.

Orpheus is seeking a creative professional to join Level Up, our mentoring programme for young disabled adults beginning their journey in the creative industries.

This role is an opportunity to support an emerging artist to build confidence, develop their creative practice, and navigate the industry. We welcome mentors from all creative backgrounds, including design, fashion, film, animation, theatre, writing, music, dance, and more.  On this occasion we are seeking someone with experience in fashion, retail, styling, and voice performance, particularly those specialising in character driven performances for animation, gaming, audio dramas, and related media.

Portland Charity has been operating for 75 years from a beautiful woodland campus in the heart of historic Sherwood Forest. We also operate highly regarded residential and day adult social care services, a multi-award winning community adult education programme and an active theatre and activities outreach programme. Every year we make a positive difference to lives of hundreds of disabled people and those with mental health difficulties.

Our trustee board play a pivotal role in keeping us at the top of our game and we are now seeking to appoint new trustees with specific expertise in one of the following areas:

• Legal services
• Adult social care
• People development and management
• Mental health support

Our Board meets 4 times per year and most trustees also support one of our sub-committees or working groups (Audit, Remuneration, Quality & Standards, Finance and Estates Planning).

We particularly welcome applications from people with lived experience (personal or family and friends) of disability and/or mental health issues. A personal induction, Governor Handbook, access to free training courses and buddying are all provided.

We welcome people with no previous, or limited, experience of a non-executive role. Out of pocket expenses can be paid.

This friendship group was started to provide opportunities for people with learning disabilities to make friends, go on monthly trips and overall have a lot of fun. You can help us make that happen!

An opportunity is available to volunteer at a friendship group for adults with learning disabilities No prior experience is required. Enthusiasm, willingness to learn, and a supportive attitude are what matter most.

1. Friendship Group

• When: Every Tuesday during term time, 1:30pm–4:30pm

• Ensuring everyone feels included.
• Encouraging individuals to participate and build confidence.
• Helping with practical tasks such as navigating meeting points, refreshments, and transitions between activities.
• Building rapport through supportive, calm interactions.
• Reporting any concerns or incidents to staff.

Volunteer Hours (Options)

This is a voluntary role.
Activities run Monday to Friday, and each session lasts 2–3 hours. Volunteers can choose the days and sessions that best suit their availability.
