Travel volunteer roles

We have an elderly client in Luton, LU1 who would like someone to visit her at home once a week, or perhaps fortnighly with a phone call in between visits. She moved to Luton from Scotland many years ago and spends most of her days alone at home which understandably gets her down.  She has a supportive daughter who works full time and a friend who drops by when she can. 

As her befriender, you will provide companionship: friendly conversation and a non-judgemental listen ear, to help make her day a little brighter. Your gift of time, and your companionship will help to break the monotomy of sitting alone at home and will give her something to look forward to. Meetings will be in her flat, or in the communal garden when the weather allows. 

You need to be reliable, friendly and caring,English speaking and a good listener for easy conversations.  You should also be able to commit to befriending for at least 6 months.  Its worth noting that most of our volunteers stay involved for longer, only because they enjoy what they do. 

Befriending is a very easy way to help someone who is struggling and can be very rewarding, in fact you might both look forward to your meetings and calls. It can also provide a great opportunity to gain practical experience of working with older adults in the community for anyone who is considering working in this field. 

We provide training before you start and ongoing support once you are matched, we also reimburse expenses for travel and refreshments. Two references are required and an enhanced DBS check will be processed.

Use your interest in tech to support independence. Sight Support Worthing (SSW) is looking for Tech Support Volunteers to help blind and partially sighted people get the most from their devices. Whether it’s setting up accessibility features, troubleshooting an app, or installing a smart speaker, your support can make everyday tasks easier and more empowering.

Role: Tech Support Volunteer

Role Description

Tech Support Volunteers provide one-to-one support to clients with their phones, tablets, computers, and other devices. Support may take place during tech drop-in sessions at our centre or via pre-arranged home visits for those unable to travel or using non-portable devices. The hours and time commitments are flexible depending on your availability, but we require volunteers to commit to a minimum of 3 sessions of 1 hour per month.

Full training and equipment are provided, and reasonable travel expenses will be reimbursed.

What You Will Be Doing

• Giving basic advice and support at tech support drop-in sessions
• Visiting clients at their homes
• Advising on assistive devices, apps, and accessibility features
• Troubleshooting basic issues with devices or connectivity
• Setting up smart speakers and other simple devices

Skills & Qualities

We’re looking for volunteers who are:

• Confident communicating in ways tailored to each client

Technical Skills

• Good general knowledge of phones, tablets, or computers

Strategic Oversight: Help deliver ORT’s vision to improve the quality of life for those living and working in Stepney and the Ocean Estate in Tower Hamlets. 

Community Impact: Support 10 year objectives i.e. the implementation of NHS/Public Health initiatives such as neighbourhood health and wellbeing, capacity building for the local Voluntary and Community sector, employment and skills and strategic expertise in housing and welfare changes.

Governance: Attend Board meetings (at least 4–5 times per year) and contribute constructively to decision-making.

Time Commitment & Location

Meetings: Held at the Harford Street Multicentre, E1 or online (hybrid) 

Duration: Meetings typically last 1–2 hours and preparatory reading.

Front Desk Volunteers will volunteer within the BCWA SPOC Team, who provide key support to all BCWA services. Volunteers will be a welcoming and friendly face for walk-in clients or clients coming to their appointments, providing relevant information and directing them to the right place. But most importantly, Front Desk Volunteers provide the initial first point of contact for BCWA clients. They help create the comfortable, safe space that is integral to the support we provide, whether that’s through a friendly chat, a cup of coffee or tea, or just being kind. The SPOC team is a busy, sometimes high-pressure environment – our volunteers are integral at our busiest times of the year to ensure our clients and services get the support they need.

Volunteering with our SPOC team on the Front Desk might look like:

• Being that friendly and welcoming first point of contact for clients accessing BCWA services.
• Understanding the reason for a client’s visit and ensuring they are directed to the right place.
• Navigating any relevant information on BCWA systems.
• Offering clients a friendly chat or refreshments and curating a comfortable and safe environment.
• Helping staff and service teams using the space and giving them any information they need.
• Being an advocate for BCWA!

As a BCWA Front Desk Volunteer, you’ll get:

• All the training you need to understand and be prepared for your role with us, so you can use your time with us to grow and learn!
• Regular check-ins and contact with our Volunteer Coordinator as an opportunity to catch up, reflect and feedback on your volunteering experience with us.

• share information

• assist people to request advocacy support by completing a form online or calling our contact centre 

All volunteering will take place Monday to Friday between 09:00 and 17:00.  You will need to be over 18 years old and be living in the UK. Please note that there is no opportunity to volunteer at weekends or in the evening.

All volunteering will take place Monday to Friday between 09:00 and 17:00.  You will need to be over 18 years old and be living in the UK. Please note that there is no opportunity to volunteer at weekends or in the evening.

Help support inspiring trekkers as they take on 13 or 26 miles to raise vital funds for dementia.

Trekking a marathon or half-marathon is no mean feat so we need volunteers just like you, to help give our trekkers as much support as possible on the day. This could be a cup of tea at one of our rest stops, a friendly word of encouragement on the route, or a triumphant cheer across the finish line.

As part of our volunteer crew, you’ll help give trekkers the encouragement and all important boost they need to keep going strong. We can guarantee that it means the world to our trekkers.

No experience needed, just bring your energy and enthusiasm! There is something for everyone, with roles based in the event hub, rest stops and along the route.

What’s involved

· Cheering trekkers and offering encouragement

· Handing out well-deserved medals and glasses of fizz

We believe that volunteering should not leave you out of pocket so reasonable transport costs are paid if you wish. Also lunch if you are volunteering for over a 5 hour shift.

We have volunteer vacancies to suit you, it might be meeting and greeting on the till and taking in donations? We need Merchandiser, Book volunteers, Clothing and homeware volunteers to treasure hunt through our many donations. 

Do you have an interest in stamps or coins? Vinyl? Vintage? you really dont need to be an expert, just have an interest.
