About The Outrunners

The Outrunners support young people to get outdoors, get moving, and build the futures they want - all through the power of running, movement and community. Our vision is a London where everyone is included and no one is left behind. 

The young people we work with have incredible talent, creativity and energy - but they don’t get the opportunities they need because of deep structural disadvantages, whether that’s racism, sexism or financial inequality.

We harness the collective energy of the running world to change that: helping young people to access fun and accessible running sessions. We help to improve their physical and mental health, their confidence, and their teamwork skills. But that’s just the beginning. The Youth Practitioners who work with our young people are not just coaches but trusted mentors and role models, helping to keep them on the right path. And our Outrunners Youth Hub is not just a room for bag drop but a specially designed space for young people to hang out before a session, play games, read comics, eat healthy snacks, or try to beat us at table tennis! We also use our brand partnerships to provide work experience opportunities, giving young people that all-important foot in the door and setting them up for bright futures.

We also run two unique marathon and half-marathon training Academies - there is a Youth Academy for young people aged 16-21 as well as a Women’s Academy for ethnically diverse women. We bring people together who have never run long-distance before, help foster a supportive community crew, and give them the skills, kit, coaching and confidence to cross that finish line and realise that they can do whatever they set their minds to - and that running belongs to them, too. 

Driven by young people themselves, we are building a community that moves together: removing barriers to participation in running and movement; building connections in London’s diverse neighbourhoods; creating pathways to help young people achieve their ambitions; and driving change to tackle disadvantage and make running truly inclusive. Last year, we supported over 1,150 young people across our programmes. 

In the 8 years that The Outrunners has existed, we have rapidly caught the attention of the running world and have grown quickly, thanks to the impactful support of major brands, races, the wider running world and the philanthropic and community sectors. We now have significant partnerships with Nike, Moju and Precision Fuel & Hydration that are taking us to the next level.

We have an experienced team, a growing basis of dedicated supporters, connections in the running and sports world, and a strong income pipeline for 2026/27.

About our Leadership Team and Board of Trustees

Leadership Team:

• Tyler Williams-Green
  Role: Founder and CEO
  Background: Tyler has 19 years of experience of working in the charity sector and is an experienced Youth Practitioner. He has worked with vulnerable young people helping to address a wide range of complex issues, from mental health through to housing. He has the lived experience of being a Black man growing up in London and currently lives in Hackney. He has been CEO of The Outrunners for 8 years. 

• Laura Murphy
  Role: Co-Founder and Strategic Advisor
  Background: Laura has 16 years of experience working in Marketing with a variety of audiences, including young people. She is currently the head of Brand, Marketing and Communication at Girlguiding.

• Daniel Burnand - Commercial Real Estate Partner at international law firm BCLP.

• Rachel Soloman - Head of Community Investment at Peabody, one of the largest and most established housing associations in the UK. 

• Lauren Baker - VP Financial Planning & Analysis Exec at AMC Networks with an Executive MBA and Big Four finance experience.

• Hamid Vaghefian - Communities & DEI Director and Social Community Engagement Specialist at London Marathon Events.

• Sam Browne - Co-Founder and CEO of Let’s Do This, one of the biggest running events onboarding platform.

• Simon Wharton - Retired Ex-CIO at BP and volunteer for several sports organisations.

Why do we need new Trustees?

We are at the next stage of our development and want to bring on board the expertise and skills that can support and guide our growth. With our strong partnership, increasing influence, and growing network of supporters, we have a major opportunity to grow our impact in the coming years. We currently have a broad range of skillsets from our existing Trustees, who have a wide range of professional backgrounds - including law, the charity sector, and sports organisation founders. As part of our ongoing development, we want to deepen the expertise of this dynamic team.

We want to ensure that The Outrunners are equipped to maximise this opportunity to support more young people and drive real structural change in the running world and beyond.

What do we need from our Trustees?

Trustees must be people with independent judgement, an ability to speak their mind, and a willingness to use their knowledge, experience and networks to support The Outrunners.

Although not essential, we are particularly interested in Trustees with either of the following skills and experience: 

• Experience navigating periods of rapid growth and scaling, including providing governance over the internal infrastructure required to do this sustainably, and managing the risks this entails.

Beyond this, the things we need from our Trustees are:

• A passion for shaping a different future for young people and having a positive impact in local communities.

• An understanding of the challenges facing young people in Hackney, and an insight into how The Outrunners Charity can best add value to supporting the future generations around us. 

• The ability to support and guide our organisation’s learning and impact upon the community around us and to think strategically and creatively about the challenges and opportunities ahead.

• An understanding of safeguarding policies and procedures that will ensure the organisation is rigorous in its processes, ensuring the safety of the communities it engages with.

• Good listening skills and the ability to respect the opinions of others.

• Good understanding of the responsibilities required of a Trustee.

• Willingness to undertake any necessary training which we require of you.

We are not expecting applicants to have all of these qualities, and expect that the best candidates will come with some others. But we hope that our Trustees between them will be able to cover all of these key attributes and more.

Above all, you need to have genuine enthusiasm and a commitment to achieving the best outcomes for the young people we work with by supporting and guiding our Chief Executive and The Outrunners’ passionate and committed staff and volunteers in their mission to better the lives of marginalised young people in Hackney.

Role Description/Responsibilities:

• Desirable - someone who has previous Trustee experience.

• Work with the existing board of Trustees and comply with the 6 main duties of being a Trustee which are:

1. Ensure your charity is carrying out its purposes for the public benefit

2. Comply with your charity’s governing document and the law

3. Act in your charity’s best interests

4. Manage your charity’s resources responsibly 

5. Act with reasonable care and skill

6. Ensure your charity is accountable

Time commitment expectations

Board members are expected to attend the four quarterly meetings and AGM, whilst also being flexible and responsive to unexpected changes. Our Board members are active ambassadors for The Outrunners Charity. This means attending and supporting events and taking opportunities to promote and develop the work of The Outrunners Charity through networks and contacts. We therefore ask that Board members commit about 2 days per year to The Outrunners Charity, on top of the four evening Board Meetings a year and an AGM.

The four essential board meetings are 3 hours long. Meetings are held at a date and time which is convenient for all, which is usually a weekday evening, and are held either online or in-person.

Minimum tenure for a Trustee is 2 years.

We don’t expect you to cover all the points about The Outrunners, or to respond line by line to this job pack, but we do want to hear how you will make a difference to our organisation and to the people we work with, if you become a Trustee.

Bright Futures UK is looking for passionate and engaging tutors to provide educational support to primary aged pupils in Maths and English and a fun, safe learning environment for young people living with long-term illnesses.

What will you be doing? 

• Run tutoring sessions online to support a young person. 

• Offer subject area knowledge and expertise related to KS1 and KS2 Maths and English. 

• Help to combat social isolation through fun and engaging tutoring sessions.

What are we looking for? 

• Subject Knowledge: Strong understanding of Primary Maths and English Curriculum.

Independent Visitor Volunteer

Our Independent Visitor Volunteers provide consistent and supportive relationships to children and young people in care, offering emotional support, companionship, and guidance through shared activities and time together.  The Independent Visitor plays a vital role in helping the young people build confidence and feel secure while enhancing their personal, social, and cultural development.

As an Independent Visitor Volunteer in England, you might:

• support the child/young person to experience enriching activities that contribute to their personal and cultural development 
• engage in activities such as pursuing hobbies, meeting for meals, or socialising in a community setting 
• listen to and support the young person, fostering a sense of safety and trust 
• help the young person develop social skills and increase their involvement in their community 
• develop a positive and lasting relationship, ensuring the young person feels valued and supported

You will need to be over 18 years old and be living in the UK. Please note that the Independent Visitor Volunteers generally volunteer at evening and weekends due to the children’s and young person’s availability.

Young Lives Foundation are recruiting volunteer wellbeing mentors (living in Kent) to support young people through one-to-one mentoring. 
 
Their mentors provide consistent, positive support to a young person, helping them build confidence, resilience, and life skills. No formal qualifications are required, and full training, safeguarding checks, and ongoing support are provided.
 
They’re looking for people who are:

• Reliable and committed
• Good listeners with empathy and patience
• Interested in making a meaningful difference to a young person’s life

The commitment is typically around 1–2 hours per week, for a minimum of 6 months.

Youth Leaders work directly with young people in St John Ambulance Badger Setts and Cadet Units. By organising a mixed weekly programme, this role will support the learning and development of young people into the next generation of health citizens. Youth Leaders also help young people develop their confidence, teamwork skills, self-discipline, and generally encourage them to strive to be the best they can be, as well as supervise and support other adult volunteers in their team.

You’ll get a huge sense of satisfaction and pride delivering an essential service. It’s great for you, great for your community and great for our nation, and it requires only a small commitment of your time. 

The Badger Sett currently meet on a Friday evening 1800-1945 at a School in Folkestone.

About us: GT Scholars is a social enterprise that tackles educational inequality by giving ambitious young people the support, skills and strategies they need to achieve their aspirations. 

We believe that all young people are gifted and talented, regardless of their background. We run a wide range of programmes that help young people achieve their academic and career aspirations, particularly those from less-privileged backgrounds.

What makes us different? There are many organisations that offer programmes to improve the life chances of young people. However, our programmes use a unique 3:1 model which means that we’re able to sustainably use our profits to provide additional places on our programmes, to young people from low-income homes. 

Our mission is to empower and develop the next generation of leaders and change-makers and we’re looking for workshop facilitators that are passionate about making a difference in young people’s lives!

Responsibilities: Facilitators are responsible for designing creative and interactive workshops for our young people, and delivering these workshops with our young people. We run some of our workshops online and other workshops are held in London. All workshops are held during the school holidays, in the evening and on weekends.

The workshop facilitator role is flexible and as part of your role, you may be involved in:

• Delivering and leading short workshops or courses, on behalf of GT Scholars (Online or offline)

• Designing engaging, interactive and educational workshops and short courses for young people and ensuring that the content is targeted to suit different abilities and capabilities

• Running your own bespoke workshops, eg. workshops in coding and technology

• Managing short activities and Q&A sessions during our workshops

• Working collaboratively with other event coordinators, volunteers, ambassadors, workshop facilitators and speakers at our events

• Following the agreed timings and content for workshops and courses

Person specification: 

As workshop facilitator, you will need to:

• Have passion, knowledge and experience in coding, computing and technology

• Have strong presentation skills

• Have strong communication skills

• Be personable and able to confidently communicate with people from a range of backgrounds and professions.

• Be passionate and committed to tackling educational inequality

• Be punctual and organised

Availability: Workshops will run during the day on school holiday dates, on Saturdays or in the evening (5pm-8pm).

Additional information: We will need to conduct reference checks and you will need an Enhanced DBS for this role as you will be working directly with children. We can process this for you or you may submit one if this is less than 2 years old.

Rate of pay: This is a self-employed role. You must be aged 18 or above. Facilitator sessions range from 2 to 6 hours. The rate of pay will vary based on the budget of the funder.

Detailed description

Mentoring within One YMCA is delivered through the youth team and volunteers. Young people aged 13-19 years can access the service which provides support and encouragement for young people to work towards their goals.

Mentors and mentees are paired based on experience, expertise and support needed.

This project will last for up to a year with each young person, with an average of 3-4 hours per month being given to the young person and their support.

Training for this role is due to commence on 22nd January 2025 (Time and Location TBC)

Pay: This is a voluntary role; however, expenses will be covered.

Key Responsibilities:

·To attend full induction training and complete all relevant child protection checks

·To arrange to meet with your mentee for 1-3 hours a month over a period of 12 months, in a public place.

·To prepare for your mentoring sessions with the purpose of progressing with their mutually agreed goals.

·To offer tailored support to your Mentee in areas such as confidence and resilience building, accessing services, careers focus and development. You may be working on a number of areas as the needs of your Mentee present themselves.

·To safeguard and promote the wellbeing of your Mentee.

·To complete feedback, monitoring and evaluation forms.

·To liaise with the mentoring coordinator for support in delivery of sessions where needed.

·To help identify the support that your Mentee requires, reporting any concerns you have to the mentoring coordinator.

·Completing regular reviews with your Mentee and mentoring coordinator.

·Any other reasonable task that is associated with the role.

Support the delivery of creative arts and crafts activities that encourage young people to express themselves, develop new skills, and build confidence. Volunteers will help facilitate activities such as painting, drawing, sculpture, crafts, and themed creative projects while creating a welcoming and inclusive environment. You will encourage participation, celebrate creativity, and help young people explore their ideas in a fun and supportive space.
