Make a meaningful difference
Volunteering can be a rewarding experience. As a small charity, we wouldn't be able to run without the support of our volunteers. If you feel you have time or skills to offer, we would love to hear from you.
Volunteering on the support service
Are you a good listener? Do you care deeply about helping others feel heard, safe, and supported?
We’re looking for six amazing volunteers to join our Support Service team at the Charity for Action on Spiritual Abuse. This is a meaningful role where you’ll support people who’ve been hurt in religious, spiritual, or faith-based communities.
What You’ll Be Doing
As a Support Service Volunteer, you’ll be part of a team offering emotional support and guidance to people who’ve experienced spiritual abuse, or who have been hurt in religious, spiritual or faith-based communities.
You’ll start by arranging an initial call to listen to their story and help them figure out what kind of support they need. If they want more help, you can offer up to five follow-up calls, spaced apart fortnightly or longer.
You’ll help people by:
Listening with care and compassion
Explaining what spiritual abuse is
Talking through their options if they want to report what happened
Working on some basic wellbeing strategies together
Signposting to other organisations who can offer more help
This role is flexible. We will decide together how many people you want to support each week, between 1 and 3 people. Then you can arrange to have those calls at a time that suits you. Each person you support can have up to six calls with you, depending on what they need.
We ask that you only arrange to have calls sometime between 9-5 on Monday to Thursday, so that someone is available to offer you a debrief if you need support straight away after a call.
What We’re Looking For
You don’t need to be an expert, but we’re looking for people who:
Live in the UK
Have experience or training in listening, wellbeing, or safeguarding
Communicate clearly and kindly
Understand how abuse in faith settings can affect people — through personal experience, supporting others, or training
Are emotionally ready to support others (especially if you’ve been through something similar)
Can work well in a team and ask for help when needed
Have access to a computer and a private space to make calls online
Have basic IT skills
What You’ll Get
We’ll make sure you feel supported every step of the way:
Full training and induction – delivered online on dates we agree together
Regular supervision and debriefs after calls
Opportunities to learn and grow
Feedback on the impact you’re making
A charity email address and access to Microsoft Teams for your calls
Ready to Apply?
If this sounds like something you’d love to be part of, we can send you a full role profile and a short online application form
Deadline to apply: Sunday 22nd November
We’ll be holding online interviews in late November to early December.
We’ll arrange training sessions during January and early February. The dates for training will be agreed with you with as much flexibility for your schedule as possible.
We are here to make sure that everyone who experiences harm in a spiritual setting receives high-qualty support.
The client requests no contact from agencies or media sales.
