Dementia Carers Count (DCC) is a national charity supporting and advocating for the millions of people across the UK who care for someone living with dementia.

Carers often feel invisible and overwhelmed, yet they provide essential, complex care every day. DCC exists to change that - offering practical and emotional support, amplifying carers’ voices, and campaigning for long‑term reform.As we shape the next phase of our strategic development, we are looking for three new trustees to bring expertise, strong governance and a genuine commitment to improving the lives of dementia carers.

What we are looking for:

• Finance & Investments Trustee
  We’re seeking a trustee with strong finance and investment expertise, including charity finance experience. You’ll help ensure robust financial governance, long‑term sustainability and effective risk management. Working with the Board and executive team, you’ll oversee budgets, monitor performance and support decisions that strengthen our financial position.

• Income Generation Trustee
  We’re looking for a trustee with expertise in income generation to support DCC’s growth and long‑term sustainability. You’ll bring strategic insight across areas such as fundraising, corporate partnerships and/or digital income, helping to diversify and strengthen our income streams. Working alongside the Board and executive team, you’ll contribute to shaping income growth strategy, offering challenge, guidance and insight to help maximise income and build organisational resilience.

• Strategic Impact & Growth Trustee
  We’re seeking a trustee who can help turn our strong foundation into greater visibility and long‑term growth. You’ll help us evidence our impact, communicate it confidently, and build partnerships and income that expand our reach. This role supports the Board to ensure our services remain high‑quality, sustainable and clearly understood by the public.
  Committee: Income Generation.

We would particularly welcome applicants who bring lived experience of dementia care, as this perspective strengthens our understanding of the challenges carers face and helps shape meaningful, relevant strategy.

Time commitment:

Around 12 days per year, including:

• Quarterly Board meetings (hybrid)

• Committee meetings (online)

• Strategy day

• Occasional involvement in interviews, events or Task & Finish groups

This is an unremunerated voluntary role.

Role of a Trustee

Our Board of trustees have shared responsibility for the overall governance, financial health and strategic direction of the charity, developing its organisational aims, objectives and goals in accordance with the governing document, legal and regulatory guidelines.

Important Information

About the role

As a Trustee, you will provide guidance, governance and final sign-off on major decisions on behalf of our membership. As Board members, our Trustees are collectively responsible for the governance of the organisation in line with the requirements of the Charity Commission. Trustees also contribute to the development of Medact's strategy and participate in a range of other activities to support the Director and staff with our work.

As Treasurer, you will monitor the financial administration of the charity and report to the Board of Trustees on its state of financial health to provide the board with the confidence and knowledge to better make strategic decisions. The Treasurer will ideally be available to work with the Executive Director and fellow Trustees between Board meetings to deal with issues which may arise. Key responsibilities include:

• Liaise with ED and Trustees to ensure the financial viability of the organisation’s strategy

• Advise on the financial implications of Medact’s strategic plan

• Present Medact’s financial position and broader context at Board meetings

• Support the Head of Finance with the production of an annual budget

• Ensure that the Board is aware of its financial duties and responsibilities and the need to comply with all legislation

• Take a lead in interpreting financial data to fellow Board members

• Provide oversight and guidance where necessary of accounts prepared for funders and  relevant statutory bodies

• Oversee the appointment of auditors and review on a regular basis

• Act as countersignatory on charity cheques and some applications to funders, approve payments on banking systems, and spending approval in accordance with financial management processes

• Ensure that all financial policies, procedures and the appointment of external financial advisors are reviewed on a regular basis

Acting as a Trustee is a voluntary role but reasonable travel expenses can be paid.

Essential:

• Good background in financial management and analysis, gained through paid or unpaid experience

• Able to communicate financial information clearly and to people with different levels of financial and data literacy 

• Knowledge and experience of finance practice relevant to voluntary and community organisations

• Knowledge of accounting processes, tools and procedures

• High proficiency in Excel/Google Sheets, Powerpoint/Google Slides for analysis and presentation

As Chair, you will support the Executive Director and staff to help build on our achievements and realise Medact’s vision. You will work with fellow Trustees to make up a strong and effective Board governing the Charity.

Who we are looking for

Our current Board brings a broad range of skills, but we recognise that we do not yet reflect the diversity of the health community. There are also specific types of experience and expertise we would like more of on the Board. In particular, we are looking for potential Trustees with one or more of the following attributes:

• Lived experience of an issue that Medact campaigns on, for instance the Hostile Environment, the health impacts of economic or housing injustice, the health impacts of armed conflict or UK security policies

• Experience as a frontline health worker of any sort, preferably current

• Legal and safeguarding expertise

• Fundraising expertise, particularly individual giving or major donor fundraising

• Human resources expertise

As Chair, you will be actively networked within the health community or broader social justice movement and highly experienced in governance or strategic leadership of a charity or NGO. You will have the skills to line-manage the Executive Director. And you will have the ability to advocate on behalf of Medact’s work, as well as helping to build the membership and public image of the organisation. 

We hope all Trustees will: 

• Share our vision for a fairer and safer world, and our analysis of the transformational change needed to get closer to it

• Approach Board discussions and conversations with the team with an open mind, able to listen to and genuinely engage with others’ views

• Display collaborative behaviours which promote harmony and good team working which supports Medact to be an effective, well-governed organisation

Previous experience on a charity board or in another governance role is useful but by no means essential. As well as fulfilling the duties of a Trustee, the Treasurer maintains an overview of WAND UK’s financial affairs. The Treasurer ensures that effective and appropriate financial measures, controls and procedures are put in place and reports to the Board at regular intervals about the financial health of the organisation.

Treasurer role

· Overseeing the presentation of budgets, internal management accounts and annual financial statements to the Board of Trustees.

· Ensuring that proper accounting records are kept, and that appropriate accounting procedures and controls are in place.

· Ensuring that robust and comprehensive financial policies are in place and being implemented, and supporting the development of policies covering financial reserves, and cost management.

· Monitoring and advising on the financial viability of the charity.

· Overseeing financial controls and adherence to systems, regularly liaising with the Director

· Advising on the financial implications of the charity’s strategic plan, including overseeing the charity’s financial risk-management process

· Ensuring that the accounts are prepared and disclosed in the form required by relevant statutory bodies, for example, the Charity Commission and/or the Registrar of Companies.

· Keeping the board informed about its financial duties and responsibilities and liaising with the Director to develop the financial understanding of the Board of Trustees.

What we are looking for

· A finance professional. A knowledge of charity finance is an advantage.

· A strategic thinker with an ability to balance risk and opportunity.

· Clear communicator with the ability to bring the financial information alive to non-finance specialists.

As a small charity, there will be times when the trustees will need to be actively involved beyond Board meetings. Terms of appointment

Terms of office

· Trustees are appointed for a 3 year term of office.

· After the 3 years of service a trustee needs to stand down and be re-elected by the Board if they would like to continue.

Time Commitment (Estimated at 1-2 hours maximum per month)

● Attending four Board meetings annually. Currently meetings are held remotely and in person at WAND UK’s office located at St Charles centre for health and wellbeing, Exmoor street W10 6DZ.

We are a small charity with a BIG vision and are looking for new Trustees to help us to remove the barriers Disabled people face. Community Action for Refugees and Asylum Seekers (CARAS) is a charity that supports refugees and asylum-seekers living in South West London, and helps them to play their full part in the community. Arriving as an asylum seeker in the UK can be a terrifying and disempowering experience. Difficulties with language, accessing services and overcoming prejudice are ever-present. We exist to help people seeking asylum overcome those challenges, and to help them rebuild their lives. 

We offer a range of individual and group support to improve the holistic wellbeing of people who have a forced displacement background, providing them the tools they need to build lives filled with value, meaning and purpose in the UK. Our activities for adults include currently include: ESOL classes; sports; women’s creative writing; women’s coffee morning, and casework. 

About the CARAS Adult Team: 

In the post-pandemic environment, CARAS is responding to the role of digital literacies in our programme delivery to learners of asylum-seeking and refugee background. In contrast to the UK essential Digital skills framework, we have built in language inclusion to create a participatory learning course for Essential Digital Literacies for learners who are new to reading and writing in English. The individuals joining CARAS are highly diverse, with different countries of origin, linguistic and educational backgrounds. We have observed over the last year that many CARAS community members have limited digital skills, particularly in regard to using computers. Community members have highlighted that computers are important for many individuals to achieve their educational and employment goals, whilst increasing confidence and independence. We have co-designed a digital skills program in partnership with CARAS community members to improve computer literacy and skills, focusing on basic computer literacy.

About Youth ESOL: 

Our ESOL project offers English language classes to young people at a wide range of levels. This provides vital skills, opportunities and social contact and is crucial for enabling young people to do well at school or college.

About the Role: 

CARAS is looking for Digital Skills Volunteer to support our face-to-face study programme for young people.

The Digital Skills group is in Streatham and is an important element of a study programme for young people aged 14 to 18 who are out of formal education. The timings of the digital skills sessions is as follows: 

• Tuesday evenings 4pm to 6pm 

Volunteers are required to attend one session per week. They are also welcome to come early and support ESOL classes before the Digital Skills sessions, where appropriate. 

The Tuesday Digital skills sessions focus on practical, accessible digital skills, such as, but not limited to: 

• Using computers, tablets, or smartphones confidently 

• Keyboard and navigation skills 

• Using email and online communication tools 

• Accessing learning platforms and online resources 

• Online safety and digital wellbeing 

• Using digital tools to support English learning, homework and study skills 

The aim of the Digital Skills sessions is to build independence, confidence, and digital inclusion, supporting young people to engage more fully with formal education and everyday life in the UK. Enrolments to the programme are based on rolling admissions, requiring adaptability to the changing digital skills needs of the group through participatory enquiry led by the ESOL teacher. 

The ESOL teacher will provide guidance, session plans, and tips for supporting learners with emerging English, including how to explain digital concepts in clear, accessible ways. 

Volunteers will typically work with 1–5 students, offering one-to-one or small group support and adapting tasks to different ability levels. 

Please note that ESOL classes do not run during school holidays, and we follow Wandsworth Council term dates.

Volunteer tasks and responsibilities: 

• Providing one-to-one or small group support during Digital Skills sessions 

• Supporting young people to use digital devices and software confidently 

• Helping to set up the classroom and digital equipment 

• Attending and contributing to volunteer debriefs after each session 

• Sharing observations on learners’ progress, challenges, and successes 

• Making use of any community languages if any, to support learners’ understanding 

• Working collaboratively as part of a team and helping to shape the project 

• Supporting young people to recognise and celebrate their achievements 

• Showing flexibility to a wide range of ability levels and confidence with technology 

• Following CARAS’ confidentiality, safeguarding, health & safety, equal opportunities, data management, and all other relevant policies 

Requirements: 

Essential: 

• Aged 18 years or older 

• An interest in education, digital inclusion, and supporting young people 

• Confident using computers, smartphones, or tablets 

• Currently resident in the UK or has asylum-seeker or refugee status 

• Able to provide five years’ worth of addresses and willing to undergo a DBS check 

• DBS and proof of residency are not necessary if you are a CARAS community member who is more recently arrived in the UK 

• Able to attend volunteer induction training (online) prior to starting 

• Able to travel to our community centre in Tooting (food and travel expenses can be reimbursed) 

• Non-judgemental and able to engage with young people from diverse backgrounds 

• Reliable and punctual, with a commitment of at least one session per week for a minimum of 4 months 

• Good communication skills, especially with people who are new to English 

• Willingness to explain digital concepts patiently and clearly 

• Ability to volunteer during Wandsworth term time 

Desirable 

• Experience supporting young people with digital skills or IT (formal or informal) 

• Knowledge of community languages such as Arabic, Tigrinya, Amharic, Pashto, Dari, Farsi, Kurdish, Somali, or Spanish 

• Experience working with young people, refugees, or learners of English in a work or volunteer capacity 

• Interest in using digital tools to support language learning 

Through volunteering with us you will: 

• Gain experience of English language teaching; 

• Meet new members of your local community;

• Learn about issues relating to refugees and people seeking asylum; 

• Work as part of a friendly, welcoming team; 

• Develop your skills and competencies such as literacy and phonics strategies for emerging learners of English; 

• Be able to access relevant training, including safeguarding training. 

• Be able to obtain a reference from us relating to your placement after 3 months of regular volunteering. 

To Apply: 

Successful applicants will be invited to a taster session at CARAS, following which they will have an informal interview with a staff member of the CARAS ESOL team and a community member. All volunteers must complete an enhanced DBS check for working with young people and attend training with us before starting. You will also receive training and support relevant to your specific role. These meetings and the induction training will be on a rolling basis, so apply ASAP!
