Chair
The Brent Centre is a long‑established London charity providing specialist psychoanalytic understanding, treatment of and research into Adolescent Mental Health. With a strong clinical heritage and a deep commitment to addressing social and economic inequality, the Centre supports young people experiencing complex and enduring mental health challenges.
We are now seeking a new Chair of the Board of Trustees to lead the organisation through its next phase of development, as the current Chair comes to the end of their term.
This role is unremunerated, with travel expenses paid
Time commitment: Up to 2 days per month remote/ hybrid (with quarterly Trustee meetings and ad hoc meetings in person)
Location: London (NW6)
About us
Founded in 1967 by a group of pioneering, internationally renowned psychoanalysts, the Brent Centre for Young People was established with a clear purpose: to transform mental health support for adolescents during the critical transition to adulthood, and to tackle the significant health inequalities that exclude many vulnerable young people from accessing the help they need.
We achieve this by providing age-specific, timely and effective psychoanalytic psychotherapies and practical support to at-risk young people struggling with serious mental health issues like anxiety, depression, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, and disordered eating.
We have developed a clinical model that puts adolescent needs and development at its core. Our unique approach maximises engagement and achieves deep-rooted and long-lasting change. With nearly six decades of experience, we have evidenced that this model works.
The role
The Chair will provide strategic leadership to the Board of Trustees, ensuring that the organisation is well governed, financially sustainable and delivering its mission with integrity and impact. Working closely with the Chief Executive, the Chair will help shape and steward the Centre’s long‑term vision, strengthen Board effectiveness, and support the organisation to respond confidently to a changing mental health landscape.
This is a governance leadership role that also carries an important external dimension. The Chair will act as an ambassador for the Brent Centre, helping to raise its profile, build relationships and champion the value of psychoanalytic approaches to improving young people’s mental health.
About you
We are seeking an inspiring and committed individual with the time and capacity to engage fully in this role. The successful candidate will bring:
- Significant senior leadership experience in a business, charitable, healthcare or public sector setting
- Demonstrable Board‑level experience, with a strong understanding of governance and trustee responsibilities
- Financial acumen and experience overseeing organisational sustainability and risk
- Strategic insight and the ability to support and challenge executive leadership constructively
- Credibility and confidence to act as an ambassador and external advocate
- A strong commitment to safeguarding, equality, diversity, inclusion and wellbeing
Experience of the mental health sector, or familiarity with psychoanalytic approaches, would be welcome but is not essential. We value curiosity, sound judgement and strong alignment with the Centre’s mission and values.

Voluntary position (reasonable expenses reimbursed)
Time Commitment: Four Board meetings per year, held in person, and four online Finance and Risk Committee meetings. There will also be ad hoc engagement with the Finance Director and Chief Executive, and one annual team day.
Our client is one of the region’s leading homelessness and social inclusion charities, supporting around 6,000 people each year to build safe, independent lives. For more than 50 years, they have helped people facing homelessness, poverty, poor mental health and social exclusion by providing compassionate, person-centred support that drives lasting change.
Our client is looking for a finance professional to join the Board of Trustees as Treasurer and help shape the future of a charity making a real difference within the communities it serves.
As Treasurer, you’ll provide strategic financial oversight, chair the Finance and Risk Committee, and support confident decision-making with the Chair, trustees, Chief Executive and Finance Director.
Person specification:
- Financial leadership: A proven track record of providing strong financial leadership and working collaboratively with senior staff, including a Finance Director.
- Financial expertise: Strong knowledge of financial management and practice, ideally with experience in the charity sector and familiarity with relevant regulatory frameworks (e.g. the Charities Act).
- Governance understanding: A clear understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities, and liabilities of trusteeship.
- Financial analysis: Strong analytical skills, with the ability to assess financial data, evaluate proposals, and understand their broader implications.

Trustees (Finance & Investment Expertise)
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Board of Trustees of the RCN Foundation, an independent charity that supports and strengthens nursing and midwifery to improve the health and wellbeing of the nation.
Since 2010, the Foundation has provided hardship, education, research and innovation funding to thousands of nurses, midwives, nursing associates and healthcare support workers across the UK. As the Foundation continues to deliver its ambitious strategy, we are seeking to appoint two Trustees with senior-level expertise in finance, accounting and/or investment governance to join the Board from April 2027. One of the successful candidates will also serve as Chair of the Income Generation and Investment Committee.
You will join a committed Board, helping to shape the Foundation’s strategic direction and ensuring it continues to deliver meaningful impact for the nursing and midwifery professions.
Trustee and Chair - Income Generation and Investment Committee
You will bring significant experience in finance, accounting, investment management or strategic financial oversight, alongside experience of chairing boards, committees or similar governance groups.
As Chair of the Income Generation and Investment Committee, you will provide leadership and oversight across the Foundation’s investment portfolio, fundraising activity and wider income generation strategy. You will support the Board in ensuring the Foundation’s long-term financial sustainability and will also represent the Foundation on the RCN Group Audit Committee.
Trustee - Finance & Investment
You will bring senior financial leadership experience, with expertise in areas such as finance, accounting, investment management or financial governance.
You will provide support and constructive challenge on matters including financial sustainability, investment performance, reserves and longer-term planning, contributing to the work of both the Board and the Income Generation and Investment Committee.
In addition, all candidates will demonstrate:
• A commitment to the mission of the RCN Foundation and supporting the nursing and midwifery workforce
• Experience operating at Board, Committee or senior leadership level
• Strong strategic thinking, judgement and decision-making skills
• An understanding of charity governance and financial stewardship
• The ability to engage effectively with a wide range of stakeholders
• A commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion
• Integrity and a commitment to the Nolan Principles of Public Life
• The capacity to commit approximately 15 days per year to the role
