Become a Trustee with Berkshire Music Trust

Berkshire Music Trust is the lead organisation of the Berkshire Music Hub, and is a charitable organisation offering music learning opportunities to children, schools and adults across the whole of Berkshire.

We are currently looking for two new Trustees to join our Board and provide independent professional insight across two priority areas:

1.  Safeguarding Oversight: We are looking for an individual with professional expertise in safeguarding, child protection, or regulatory compliance, to provide rigorous oversight of our safeguarding framework and safer recruitment practices.

2.  Leadership & Governance: We are looking for a senior leader with a proven track record in strategic change, corporate governance, or legal contexts. You would be an active member of the Board, providing objective insight to help shape our long-term strategic direction.

Previous experience of music education or working with a charity would be beneficial but is not essential. We are committed to expanding the diversity of Board members, particularly as regards gender, age, disability, and ethnicity. Training can be provided.

The role:

· To help recruit people into the session and promote an overview of the group

· Attend the group and support people

· Share a group agreement at the start of each session, including respect and

confidentiality

· To respect peoples’ differences

· Report any concerns, including safeguarding that may arise in the group.

· Work closely with the group worker to plan and evaluate sessions

· Support people accessing the service to develop their own skills and interests

· Support the Group Worker with any tasks linked to the running of the group,

including planning, set up, and evaluation

· Potential to take the lead on facilitating groups

· Potential to develop new groups and shape the way these are offered to

people accessing the service

You will be helping your local community understand what a Read Easy group does; how local people can get the reading support they need; and how volunteers can help. There are two distinct forms of publicity, one requiring raising awareness by giving talks, putting up posters and talking to people generally about Read Easy. The second is using social media effectively to raise awareness and publicise your group. This role is commonly supported by other members of 
the team, with specific skills to offer.

You will be provided with the Management Team Handbook, policies, training/induction and guidance specifically needed for this role, including access to support from a Read Easy UK Regional Adviser, via your Team Leader. You will also be invited to Read Easy UK’s regional and national forums which gives volunteers an opportunity for networking with those from other

Read Easy provides free, confidential, one to-one reading coaching for adults who struggle with reading, through a network of volunteer groups. Read Easy groups are changing the lives of individual adults across the country by providing them with the support they need to learn to read, and in turn opening doors for them to all sorts of new opportunities in life. Outline of the IT Supporter role
It is amazing how much difference you could make to your local group by providing IT support, either remotely or in person. Even the smallest things like setting up email accounts, using video calling software and creating social media accounts can be a real challenge for some volunteers, so your expertise will make the world of difference to supporting your local group to help adults learn to read in your community.

● Knowledge and previous experience of fundraising is desirable, though not essential.

The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) gives old buildings a future - and we’re looking for an experienced strategic thinker and inspiring leader to be our new Chair of Trustees in our 150th anniversary year and beyond.

As Chair, you'll guide us at Board level, champion the SPAB Approach, attend meetings, support our activities and be an ambassador for the country’s oldest heritage organisation.

IAPWA is seeking an experienced HR Volunteer to provide strategic guidance and independent oversight of our people practices. This role is focused on supporting good governance rather than delivering day-to-day HR operations.

Working alongside the CEO and relevant staff, the volunteer will help ensure the charity's HR policies, procedures and practices remain compliant with UK employment legislation, reflect best practice, and support a positive and inclusive working environment.

This is an advisory role requiring a couple of hours per week, with flexibility around when those hours are completed. The volunteer will act as a trusted source of HR knowledge, helping the charity identify potential risks, strengthen governance, and continuously improve its people practices.

• Provide independent advice and guidance on HR matters to support good governance.
• Review HR policies and procedures periodically, recommending updates to reflect changes in legislation and best practice.

As a First Response Volunteer, you will help find those rough sleeping quicker, and enable Outreach workers to spend more time supporting those found to move away from the streets and get connected to other local services. First Responders play a crucial role to ensure people sleeping rough receive vital support. This is not a client-facing role and therefore is well suited to somebody looking for their first role in the homelessness sector. However, we do also offer development opportunities to develop your skills and knowledge about rough sleeping for those interested.

On shift, you and a partner volunteer will be given a list of people who have been seen sleeping rough. Your role is to identify those who are sleeping rough, and pass information about referrals to the Outreach team to follow up on – they will help the person find accommodation and link them into non-accommodation-based support for example around physical or mental health.

Shopmobility is a scheme that supports people to hire mobility aids during their visit to the city. We're based in Chantry Place (previously Chapelfield Shopping Centre) and we are looking for volunteers to help with all aspects of the day-to-day running of the shop.This is a great opportunity to volunteer, build your skills and meet new people! 

Role overview: 

 As is typical of working with the community, no one day is the same.  As such, the role may include, but is not limited to: 

• Opening the site ready for business and helping to prepare the shop 
• Closing the shop at the end of the day 
• Greeting customers and acting as a friendly, supportive and welcoming face 
• Supporting customers to work out what they need, and to hire the equipmen
• Keeping the site looking presentable and welcoming
• Handling cash and taking card payments
• Supporting people to sign up as Shopmobility members and to join Equal Lives as members

• Cleaning and maintenance of vehicles when they’re returned

Volunteering Arrangements 

 The site will follow the COVID19 safety guidelines and volunteers will be reimbursed reasonable expenses incurred whilst supporting us.

All volunteers are required to undertake our core training programme. This covers basic safeguarding and other key features, such as data protection.

New volunteers will have an opportunity to ‘shadow’ experienced volunteers and members of staff 

Potentially, depending on the candidate, there may be additional opportunities to participate in a variety of accredited training courses. Please ask a manager for further details.

Youth Helpers work directly with young people in St John Ambulance Badger Setts and Cadet Units. By supporting our Youth Leaders to deliver a sessions across our range of programmes. In this role, you'll support the learning and development of young people into the next generation of health citizens. Youth Helpers also help young people develop their confidence, teamwork skills, self-discipline, and generally encourage them to strive to be the best they can be, as well as supervise and support other adult volunteers in their team.

You’ll get a huge sense of satisfaction and pride delivering an essential service. It’s great for you, great for your community and great for our nation, and it requires only a small commitment of your time. 

Pursuing the role

Cadet Groups and Badger Setts meet on various nights across Kent, the average meeting time is between 1:30 - 2:00 hours per week. Training needs to be completed to undertake the role, this is mainly eLearning. Youth helpers can complete further training and become Youth Leaders once they have gained the knowledge and experience. There is also the opportunity to help at activity days, outings or residential weekends.

About the role

The Chair plays a pivotal role in guiding the Board and supporting the CEO, ensuring that governance is strong and aligned with the organisation’s values, strategic goals and founding Christian principles.

As a leader, the Chair shapes the culture, champions inclusivity and drives the strategic direction of the organisation.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for a values-led and collaborative leader who is genuinely excited by the opportunity to chair an ambitious organisation at an important moment in its journey. With a bold new strategy, strong foundations and a talented executive team in place, this is a compelling opportunity to help shape what comes next for children and young people across Sussex and Surrey.

You will be an experienced Chair or senior board-level leader, bringing a progressive, strategic mindset and a strong track record of creating the conditions for high-quality dialogue and sound decision-making. You will strike the right balance between support and constructive challenge, applying emotional intelligence to cultivate a trusted and effective partnership with the CEO and executive team.

You will demonstrate an active Christian faith alongside a genuine passion for our purpose and values, aligning personal conviction with organisational mission.

Time commitment - approximately one day per month on average.

This is an unpaid role; however, reasonable expenses will be reimbursed. The initial term of appointment is three years.
