The Maritime Archaeology Sea Trust is seeking a new trustee to support our exceptional Board of existing trustees.
About Us
MAST is a registered UK charity, founded in 2011 by maritime archaeologist and author Jessica Berry, to address the gulf in the way our maritime Underwater Cultural Heritage is protected in contrast to land-based archaeology. We are considered the foremost maritime archaeological organisation in the UK, providing full-cycle maritime archaeological services, from discovery, recording, excavation and conservation of the artefacts for the public to enjoy and understand. We exist to fill a long overdue void in our understanding of our nation’s rich maritime heritage, to ensure that there is a sustainable future for such sites, through archaeology, research, study and dissemination.
MAST is accredited to the Governing Bodies of the UNESCO Convention on Underwater Cultural Heritage 2001.
Desired skills and experience
- Strategic and business development
- Familiarity with the management of large projects
- Leadership skills, commercial acumen and integrity
- Willing to work closely with our fundraiser
- Has a strong network of business associates and the ability to build relationships with organisations and potential donors including high net worth individuals
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to represent MAST to government bodies, the public, stakeholders, and other organisations
- Previous experience of being a trustee is not necessary, but an understanding of the charity and voluntary sector will be an advantage
The role
- To work with fellow Board members to build on MAST’s reputational standing nationally and internationally, and to assist in fundraising for MAST’s Centre of Excellence in Maritime Archaeology and ongoing work
- To play a pivotal role in raising MAST’s profile and defining our long term future

The National Heritage Science Forum connects organisations involved in heritage science research and its practical application, for the benefit of society. Heritage science brings together the arts and sciences to help us understand, care for and preserve our cultural and natural heritage - from analysing paintings at the sub-microscopic level to addressing global challenges like climate change.
The opportunities
NHSF is seeking four trustees to join its Board at an exciting and transformational time. The positions available are:
- two general trustees
- Honorary Secretary
- Honorary Treasurer
You would join us at a pivotal time for heritage science in the UK, with NHSF playing a leading role in a dynamic research landscape that includes a recent £80 million investment by UK Research and Innovation to establish the Arts and Humanities Research Council-led Research Infrastructure for Conservation and Heritage Science (RICHeS).

You don't need previous trustee experience or a background in heritage science - we'll provide a full induction.

Crossness Pumping Station (overseen by the Crossness Engines Trust) is a unique and valuable museum of UK and world reknown telling the history of how the ambitious management of sewage transformed London as a city of growth and innovation in the 1860s and helped eradicate cholera. Preserved and restored by a group of enthusiasts since 1987, we are now entering a second phase of major restoration and we need visionary trustees who can help us achieve it.
This role is one of three we have created for experts in their field to help us implement a major programme over the next 5-10 years. It really is your chance to be part of our history!
As well as the usual trustee roles (outlined in the role description attached) the specific skills needed for this role include:
Role Objectives
- Acting as lead expert on the Board in relation to fundraising (eg grant funding, legacy funding, onsite donations, but not commercial trading/visitor charges).
- Advising on good practice and regulatory and policy issues in charity fundraising.
- Identifying future fundraising prospects and working with volunteers to achieve these.
Responsibilities
- Work with a volunteer lead/team on identifying future funding sources from grant-making bodies.
- Develop a fundraising strategy with volunteers.
- Develop corporate fundraising targets with other trustees.
- Investigate legacy fundraising and other visitor/member/donor opportunities.
Candidate requirements
Essential
- Proven success in heritage or similar charity fundraising.
- Good knowledge of the standards required by the Institute of Fundraising.
- Ability to develop fundraising skills in volunteers.
- Good knowledge of relevant stakeholders in the fundraising community.
- Excellent communication skills including with staff and volunteers as well as fellow trustees.
- An understanding of the importance of collaboration and problem-solving.
- Confident and proficient in the use of MS Office 365.
- Commitment to attend board meetings regularly and volunteer for other sub-committees as appropriate.
- Able to devote around 2-3 hours per week on preparing for meetings.
- Treating colleagues with respect and politeness.
Desirable
- Experience in the charity sector.
- Experience as a volunteer in a similar organisation.
- Experience in Digital, Marketing and Finance would also be useful.
