Midlands Air Ambulance Charity is seeking to appoint the following Board positions – to enhance the skills, experience and diversity of our Boards, and to accommodate recent growth and governance needs:
(1) Two new Trustees for the parent charity’s Board of Trustees, Midlands Air Ambulance Charity.
We are looking for someone who:
- Has one of these desired specialisms (see Recruitment Pack for further detail) =
- Income generation - in particular, high net worth donors; corporates; commercial including sales and negotiation expertise.
- Healthcare - Pre-hospital emergency care expertise and/ or Care Quality Commission regulation experience and/ or NHS and health care commissioning experience.
- Has the time to commit to four in person Board meetings and four virtual committee meetings per annum as well as the annual in person Board Day, and any relevant events (annual basis).
(2) One new Director for the charity’s trading subsidiary Board of Directors, Midlands Air Ambulance Trading Ltd.
We are looking for someone who:
- Has retail sector experience, with charity retail experience desirable.
- Has the time to commit to four Board meetings, the annual Board Day and any relevant events (annual basis).
Our MAAC Trustees and MAATL Directors are volunteers and are highly valued for their contribution to the Charity. Becoming a MAAC Trustee or MAATL Director will provide you with the opportunity to use your professional skills and life experiences to make a demonstrable impact – helping us to provide outstanding helicopter-led medical services now and in the future.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Why we need your help
The Marie Curie Dementia Befriending service is provided by trained volunteers who offer one-to-one companionship and support to people with a terminal illness that have dementia and their families. The service would not be able to reach those most in need if it was not for the commitment and hard work of the volunteers delivering the service.
Befriender volunteers provide companionship and emotional support, practical support, short breaks for carers and help with signposting for information and support.
What we need you to do
Your role will include, some of, but not restricted to the following tasks:
- Complete all initial mandatory Dementia Befriender volunteer training, as well as any refresher training whilst you are a Marie Curie volunteer
- Carry out weekly visits with the person(s) you’re supporting, as agreed with the Volunteer Co-ordinator. This could be in a variety of settings, for example in a family’s home, in a care home or out in the community.
- Provide one to one companionship and support. For example - Offering a listening ear and spending time engaging in everyday conversation, activities or hobbies with the person you are supporting. Accompanying them to an appointment, social groups or taking short trips out. Helping with small daily tasks eg making tea or accessing the internet. Allowing carers to have a short break. Signposting to relevant local support services or finding out information as requested.
(This list is only an outline as support will vary according to the needs of those using the service. Dementia Befriender volunteers do not provide nursing or personal care, or offer counselling or advice)
- Driving clients to pre-arranged health or social care (eg to chemotherapy appointments or day therapy at the hospice)
- Follow all mandatory procedures that form part of the Dementia Befriending service. Examples include submitting written report forms, identifying and briefing a lone worker Buddy, and following procedures for lone worker safety.
- Keep your manager informed of any changes to the situation, or any significant happenings in connection to the person you’re supporting and/or their family, either in person or by phone
- Be reliable and committed to regularly spending time with someone and offering support
- Attend group events and training sessions for Marie Curie Dementia Befriender volunteers
- Attend individual sessions with your Volunteer Co-ordinator as required
- Represent the Marie Curie Dementia Befriending service positively to those using the service
- Support with Advanced Care Planning for clients
What skills or experience do you need?
- Commitment and reliability - able to keep appointments and volunteer for approximately 3 hours a week
- Patience, empathy and emotional stability
- An understanding of the importance of confidentiality
- Willing to be flexible to the needs of the individual
- Ability to operate within the boundaries of the role

Carers Trust Mid Yorkshire are a charity providing respite support to unpaid Carers; providing a regular break each week by stepping in to take care of their loved one for a few hours enabling the Carer to have some rest and relaxation of their choice. Community Driver
Community Driver Volunteers support the Actively Involved Team by driving people aged 55 and over or people under 55 with complex health needs, to various local locations.
Tasks: Community Driver Volunteers will drive our clients to nearby locations in West or North Kent using their own car. You could help with anything from shopping and social activities for clients with limited mobility. You are invited to join in on the social activities, although this is optional. Being able to get from A to B can be challenging for some of our clients who have health conditions or restricted mobility. As a Community Driver Volunteer, you will help support our mission to help clients live independently, and improve health and wellbeing. This role is really for those who enjoy driving, and are friendly, welcoming and supportive.
Date and time: This is flexible, we share a schedule of trips and you can select the ones you would like to do.
Place: Various – based around West and North Kent.
Transport: Own transport is essential. We will cover all travel expenses in your volunteering role.
Skills required:

What is Healthwatch?
Healthwatch Hounslow is an independent organisation set up to champion the views of health and social care service users. It strives to make sure that health and social care services are meeting local needs and to ensure that the public’s voice is heard regarding how local services are run. Healthwatch also makes sure that the public is informed on any plans to change those services, and in identifying gaps in services.
About the Role
Service evaluations are an integral part of Healthwatch activity, placing service users, patients and care home residents at the heart of assessing quality of service delivery. Effective observation of service provision and evidence-based reporting of the quality of care delivered in various settings is a powerful means of influencing standards. Healthwatch Hounslow volunteers have undertaken 'Enter & View’ visits to various publicly funded care settings and care homes to assess quality of provision and report on their findings.
A competent body of volunteer expertise is thereby being further utilised to assess other publicly funded services. The role of Healthwatch Hounslow as consumer champion in the Health & Social care sector is reinforced through its ‘Enter & View’ activity and reporting which influences commissioners when designing services or service providers as they deliver them throughout the borough.
Tasks
- Visiting and inspecting care facilities (remotely), completing surveys and a review of the facility.
- Attend bi-monthly planning group meetings according to availability

We hope to provide our placement students with an insight into the daily internal workings of the world’s largest humanitarian organisation. The student will have access to relevant in-house training and development opportunities during their placement. There also may be ad hoc opportunities to get involved in other areas of work where appropriate. You will be responsible for achieving specific work objectives, agreed with you, in a set length of time within one of the various departments across the UK. As you are recruited to support or complete particular objectives, you will have a real responsibility and place in the department, bringing some of your skills and experience to the role; you will also have the chance to develop workplace skills.

The British Red Cross is a volunteer-led humanitarian organisation that helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are. Placement Volunteers at the British Red Cross are highly valued for the skills and energy they bring. We aim to provide our placement volunteers with an insight into the daily workings of the world’s largest humanitarian organisation. The successful candidate will have access to relevant in-house training and development opportunities during their placement. Your role as a placement volunteer will help make a great contribution to the work of the British Red Cross. You will take responsibility for achieving specific objectives that are agreed with you within one of the various departments across the UK. You will have a real responsibility and place in the department, bringing some of your skills and experience to the role; you will also have the chance to develop workplace skills.

HOURS: This placement will be over 21 hours per week; Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Tuesday and Thursday will be in the Sheffield office. The volunteering hours are negotiable to balance your needs and what can be achieved in the role.
Bursary Scheme The British Red Cross offers a bursary scheme to those placement volunteers from low-income households. Eligibility will be determined through a separate application process open to all short-listed candidates. All British Red Cross volunteers are entitled to out-of-pocket reasonable expenses.
For this scheme we are defining low-income households as:
- Inside London: Living with family or partner £25,000 or under. Living independently £22.500 or under
- Outside London: Living with family or partner £18,500 or under. Living independently £16,500 or under
Young People and this role Our placement volunteer opportunities are open to people at different stages of their career, aged 15 or above. Whether you’re student, a recent graduate or someone with more experience looking for a career change, we would be happy to hear from you.
Anyone can volunteer with the Red Cross from the age of 15. An individual risk assessment, parental consent and safeguarding considerations will be required for those aged 15 – 17. Due to the nature of the activities specific to this placement opportunity you need to be 18 years or older.

The casework placement volunteer will work one-to-one with vulnerable asylum seekers and refugees to help them access suitable services. It will include but not limited to, undertaking sensitive and comprehensive interviews with service users to assess their needs and agreeing a plan of action with the beneficiary.
What you will be doing
- Support the beneficiary to access other services, for example from the NHS, legal representatives, and Social Services
- Maintaining effective client records using our data capture system including communicating effectively with the Home Office case owner
- Working effectively with interpreters
- Offering onward referral to relevant bodies as appropriate
- Providing one to one support to beneficiaries
- Undertaking sensitive and comprehensive interviews with service users to assess their needs
- Identify and respond appropriately to safeguarding and protection issues with vulnerable clients, including children and vulnerable adults.
The skills you need
- A good communicator and empathetic about the situation and needs of refugees
- Able to use emotional support skills in a calm and responsible manner
- Aware of conflict and migration issues and sensitive to cultural issues, including those relating to gender
- Personally resilient as you may need to deal with difficult or challenging situations
- Understanding of face-to-face client work and/or casework, demonstrating excellent communication and proven listening skills
- Able to speak good English; plus knowledge of a foreign language would be useful (particularly one used in the current local refugee population)
- Able to use emotional support skills in a calm and responsible manner
- Able to keep the beneficiary at the heart of what you do, supporting the Red Cross to understand service user needs and the difference our role makes
- Willing to adhere to BRC Casework Good Practice Standards
- Able to work alone with minimum supervision as well as part of a team
- Willing to uphold the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and adhere to the Society’s Equal Opportunities Policy
- Willing to complete a criminal record check

Marie Curie is piloting a Companions in the Community Service to support those in their last year of life in care/nursing homes.
The Service will complement the support already provided by the Nursing Team, and local community service, providing end of life expertise to patients and their circle of support. Whilst clinical and care professionals provide hugely important services, we want to ensure that those who have a life limiting condition and/or experiencing health decline have all the support they need to help navigate the practical and emotional journey.
Companions will be trained in a variety of end of life care support needs. The volunteer role will include regularly attending the care home and pro actively engaging with residents, hosting Life Cafes and having 'whats important to you' conversations.
The role will be based in a nursing home or care home in Surrey and the patient will be offered Companion support.

ABOUT THE ROLE
The role of the Volunteer Barber is an important one to the charity as part of our confidence-building and resettlement efforts.
The role will suit someone who is a trainee or qualified barber or hairdresser, who can commit to 6 hours per month at our Health and Wellbeing days across South West London.
The volunteer will be mindful of how much a new appearance can increase the self-esteem of someone who is experiencing homelessness or is being resettled by SPEAR. They will enjoy developing positive relationships with new people and will be willing to work outside of their own comfort zone providing haircuts at no charge to SPEAR clients.
LOCATION/S: Our Health and Wellbeing days are held across Richmond, Kingston, Wandsworth, Merton and Sutton Boroughs. We hold approximately one Health and Well-being day per month in one of the above locations.
The volunteer must have an enhanced DBS background check (SPEAR will apply for this on your behalf.)
