About CARAS :
Community Action for Refugees and Asylum Seekers (CARAS) is a registered charity that has been supporting refugees and asylum-seekers since 2002 empowering them to integrate and engage in the local community.
Arriving as an asylum seeker/refugee can be a disempowering experience. Difficulties with language, accessing services and overcoming prejudice are ever-present. As an organisation we are committed to work alongside refugees to overcome those challenges, and to help them build their lives.
We offer group support and targeted support work. We offer a range of activities including: ESOL classes; social and recreational activities such as youth club, drama, trips and family activities; educational support for young people; and casework and advocacy support.
Our values are at the centre of all our work:
• Kindness: CARAS will nurture all who are part of our community, helping everyone to develop their skills, talents, and interests
• Justice: CARAS will strive for social justice following a rights-based approach in all our work and challenging instances when rights are not upheld in wider society
• Empowerment: CARAS works alongside people, recognising and respecting their skills and strengths and striving together for better outcomes
• ‘With’ not ‘for’: CARAS will put the voices, opinions, experiences and needs of its beneficiaries at the heart of all that we do
About the Role:
CARAS offers advocacy casework integrated into all of its projects, ensuring that people who attend our groups can access support to address issues in a friendly and timely manner. A key part of the casework service is to help connect people to resources and activities that they need.
A key areas of need is digital access, either by smart phone or laptop.
People living in asylum accommodation receive £9/week making saving for items impossible.
Whilst many activities have returned to face-to-face delivery many have stayed online, not having a laptop impedes people’s ability to join English classes and social activities. People attending college face difficulties in completing college work without access to computers in the evenings, access to a laptop means people are able to take greater control over their independent learning. Smart phones make a huge difference in people’s ability to have contact with family and community across the world.
To meet this need we have built a partnership with a grant giving organisation, Acts435, to support people to get personal laptops.
We are able to refer 5 people at a time for grants to buy new laptops/phones. Once the grant money is received we purchase the devices for community members to collect.
We are looking for a volunteer to do these referrals each month and support people to purchase and receive their laptops and phones. This is an extremely rewarding role, interacting with lots of the CARAS community members and making a very tangible positive impact on people’s lives.
Tasks and Responsibilities:
- contacting community members who are on our waiting lists by phone to explain the scheme to them
- complete grant applications with community members
- monitoring the grant platform to see when grants have been made
- purchasing laptops online and liaising with community members to arrange collection
- completing monitoring forms with community members once grants are recieved and uploading to grant platform
- recording all referrals and work done on our case management system (lamplight)

About CARAS casework:
CARAS works with adults and young people of a refugee and asylum seeker background to find solutions to their problems. There are two separate sub-teams within the Casework team; young people and adults. We support adults to navigate the asylum system, understand their options, access benefits, connect with services and realise their goals. We are a non-specialist casework and advocacy service, so we work in close partnership with other local organisations to whom we refer people with more complex issues.
Using the empowerment model, our casework service embodies CARAS’ values of ‘with not for’, always striving to ensure people are armed with the information and resources they need to make decisions and take action for themselves.
About the Role:

Volunteer caseworkers have 1:1 appointments, either in person or by phone, with CARAS members. These can be related to a range of topics. We're starting a circular fashion revolution. Loom connects you with designers to upcycle your clothes. Using AI and machine learning, we're making upcycling easy, fun and accessible. In the UK it’s estimated we only wear 1/4 of our wardrobes. That’s 1.6 billion unworn items of clothing in the UK alone, mainly due to bad design, bad fit and poor quality. This is leading to a global crisis. By 2050, 150 million tonnes of clothes will be in landfill. In fact, the problem is so huge you can already see a textile landfill in Chile from space.
There’s no need for those clothes to be thrown away. There are tens of thousands of designers and seamstresses in the UK who can help repair, alter or redesign your clothes - saving them from landfill and giving them a whole new lease of life. But currently ordering custom made or upcycling your clothes is expensive and inaccessible. Would you even know where to start? Imagine if you could create your own tailor made wardrobe at the touch of a button. Introducing Loom. Loom connects you with designers to create bespoke or upcycled clothing. Tell us about an item you no longer wear, and we’ll give you ideas on how we could transform it. Or already have a vision of what you want to create? Tell us & our designers will bring your vision to life. Our technology uses AI and machine learning to match-make your projects with the right designers based on style, location and design. And our technology not only supports you but also our incredible community of designers. Loom is an all-in-one software solution to not only help our designers find more work, but also manage orders, payments & customer service, to help grow their businesses sustainably.

Agriculture is the primary source of income and food security for over 80% of the population in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo). Unfortunately, farmers in this region face numerous challenges that significantly hinder their productivity and overall well-being. These challenges include limited access to important information, inadequate storage infrastructure, transportation limitations, insufficient financial assistance, reliance on rainfall, and a lack of opportunities for training and skill development. As a result, over 7.7 million people in the DR Congo are currently struggling with severe food insecurity.
Our organization is fully committed to supporting farmers by providing them with the necessary knowledge, skills, and resources to enhance their productivity and meet the highest standards of quality. One of the primary focuses of our program is to offer farmers comprehensive training on the most effective agricultural practices. The Governors will work with the college senior management to ensure the college offers a broad based curriculum to maximise the teaching and learning experiences of all its students, with demonstrable outcomes. Sense College East Lay Governors will attend 3 full committee meetings a year, plus 3 extra meetings for their chosen sub-committee. Meetings last from 90 minutes for sub-committees and 2 hours 30 minutes for the full committee, Lay Governors will come prepared and engaged, having done the reading the prior and ready to ask any questions they may have. Governors of Sense College have a varied role encompassing a range of duties. Much of this is undertaken through participation in the full Governing Body meetings and Sense College sub-committees according to a governor`s experience and skillset, and through college visits.
Some examples of governor duties are below, noting that these are not exclusive:
- Reviewing, approving and monitoring the implementation of the Sense College 2022-2025 Strategic Plan

Befriending Volunteer
You can make a difference…Age UK Wandsworth is a small, local, independent charity that has been working with older people in the area since 1963. We rely on your support to keep serving the older residents with in the Wamdsworth community. We have a dedicated team of experienced staff and a large network of dedicated local volunteers. Our aim is to enable everyone to age well in Wandsworth. We would love your help to be able to continue to support older Wandsworth residents.
Our Be-a-Friend service is one of our longest running services, matching people over 65, who live alone and have limited social contact, with a friendly local volunteer with similar hobbies and interests. The volunteer and their new friend set up a suitable time for them to meet each week for a chat and a cup of tea, which could be during the day, in the evening on the way home from work or even on the weekends . If you would prefer to volunteer from home, you can also be matched with an older person for telephone befriending. For many of our matched pairs, this is the beginning of a firm friendship.
Befriending Plus
Befriending Plus is an extended version of the Be-a-Friend programme, for individulas needing help with life admin and small tasks as well as companionship. For Befriending Plus pairs, time spent together can include helping to use a phone or tablet, helping the client to organise their file, going out for a coffee or popping to the post office together. This support can help older people to stay independent at home for longer, as well as increasing their confidence to do these tasks when the volunteer is not there.
The client requests no contact from agencies or media sales.
