Who we are.
Share was founded in 1972 by a group of physically disabled adults who were facing barriers to work. We now primarily work with adults with learning disabilities, autism and mental health needs because this group still faces the most significant barriers to work, education and training and suffers from significant health and societal inequalities.
We are based in South London. We work out of two training centres, in Battersea and Brixton, a garden – in Tooting – and a community café and sports hub in Vauxhall. We provide a range of programmes, activities and qualifications aimed at supporting our students to live happier, healthier and more independent lives.
Our vision is to live in a world where disabled adults are genuinely valued and included, can make choices and have the freedom to achieve their ambitions. We currently work with 178 students each week, and also provide support for their families and carers.
About the role.
Share is seeking a Chair of our Board of Trustees, who will work alongside the Chief Executive, Senior Leadership Team and other Trustees to ensure the charity delivers its mission and vision. Supported by the sub-committee chairs, the Chair of Trustees ensures that the Board has oversight of the Charity’s governance and strategic direction.
Who we are looking for.
The Chair will role model Share’s organisational values of respect, support, ambition, kindness, integrity and inclusivity and be committed to reducing the social injustice disabled people face.
You will have a successful track record as a senior leader, with experience at board level (either as a Trustee or Company Director). You will be comfortable chairing meetings and events and will promote a collaborative team environment.
In addition, you will be a confident ambassador, able to advocate for Share’s work and the students it supports to a wide range of audiences.

- Time Commitment
Board meetings occur six times a year at 5:30 PM on the first Tuesday of even-numbered months in person. The Chair also regularly meets with the Chairs of the three Board Sub-Committees and the Chief Executive. Additionally, there are two away afternoons each year focused on strategic planning, held locally.
While the Chair is not required to attend the virtual sub-committee meetings, they may choose to do so.

Role Description – Honorary Treasurer
The Honorary Treasurer is a key voluntary post within Mountain Training England and the wider network of related mountaineering organisations. As a member of the Board of Trustees, the Treasurer shares the responsibility for overseeing the management of the organisation and implementing the strategic objectives of its members.
The Treasurer has an oversight role over all aspects of financial management, working closely with other members of the Board of Trustees to safeguard the organisation financially. They act as an informed reference point for the Chair and other Trustees.
Although it is the Treasurer’s responsibility to ensure proper financial records and procedures are maintained, much of this work is delegated to the Finance and Audit Sub-committee and paid staff.

Role of Mountain Training England Treasurer
- The Treasurer oversees the financial matters of Mountain Training England in line with good practice and in accordance with the governing document and legal requirements of the Charities and Companies Acts and reports both quarterly to the Board and also to the Members at three Council meetings per year about the financial health of the organisation.
- The Treasurer ensures that effective financial measures, controls and procedures are in place.
- The Treasurer takes the lead on the formulation of policies for finances, reserves and investments.
Specific Responsibilities
- To oversee/verify and present budgets, accounts, management accounts and financial statements to the Board and Members after discussion with the Finance Committee.
- To ensure that appropriate accounting procedures and controls are in place.
- To ensure that full and accurate accounts and records are kept.
- In conjunction with the Executive Officer maintain sound financial management of MTE’s resources, ensuring expenditure is in line with the charity’s objects.
- To ensure compliance with relevant legislation e.g. Companies and Charity legislation and contractual agreements with external agencies such as funders and statutory bodies
- Chairing the Finance and Audit Committee in line with its terms of reference and reporting back to the Board.
- Present the annual statement of accounts to the Members at the Annual General Meeting.
- To liaise with designated staff about financial matters
- Advising on the financial implications of MTE’s strategic and operational plan.
- Liaising with the independent examiner to ensure that the annual accounts are compliant with the current Charities Statement of Recommended Practice.
- Ensure any recommendations of the independent examiner are implemented
- Contribute to the fundraising strategy of the organisation.
- Advise on reserves policy and investment policy
- Ensure that there is no conflict between any investment held and the aims and objects of MTE or partner organisations
- Ensure that MTE has sufficient liquidity to meet its future commitments.
Commitment
As Treasurer you will chair the Finance & Audit Committee, which meets quarterly. You will also be expected to attend four Board meetings and three Members’ Council meetings per year.
Occasional attendance at MTUKI Council meetings and Finance Planning Group meetings is required.
Role Description – Adventure Activities Sector Trustee

Mountain Training England (MTE) is looking for the right person to join a Board of eight Trustees. The Trustees share the responsibility for overseeing the management of the organisation and implementing the strategic objectives of its members.
Who are we looking for?
We seek a person who has an excellent knowledge of the wider mountaineering, climbing and hillwalking sector, and experience of the Mountain Training qualifications, and who can contribute to the Board’s work in developing and implementing national strategy to support competent leadership and participation in these activities.

Commitments
The Board of Mountain Training England meets four times a year. There are a further three meetings of Members per year. See separate document explaining the time commitments.
Trustees also participate in sub-committees and special project groups such as the Finance sub-committee, the Screening committee and Award Review groups.
Trustees serve for a term of three years and are re-elected annually at the Annual General Meeting. At the end of the first three-year term of office Trustees are eligible for re-election for one further term of three years. From time to time the positions of Treasurer, Vice-Chair and Chair become subject to renewal. Applications are invited and the Members appoint at the Annual General Meeting.
Term

The Diocese of London is seeking an experienced leader, for our next Chair of the Audit and Risk Committee, to play a key role in the work of the London Diocesan Fund (‘LDF’), as we seek to do everything we can to support the church in London as it contributes to the flourishing of people and communities across the city
The size and missional opportunity of the Diocese of London is huge. Set up in 1988, now a Charitable Company Limited by Guarantee, we have just celebrated 35 successful years, offering more than 600 counselling hours to young people every month. Demand and complexity of services continue to increase, and we have thus improved space and availability to meet that demand.
Our anniversary year meant a new logo, and in 2023/24, our income was maintained at £220k, with a successful funding bid. Of course, income-generation remains a high priority, as for all charities.
The role and what we are looking for in a new trustee
Trustees are the people who make the top-level decisions for our charity. Our Board includes people with experience and skills in governing a youth counselling charity, and we require new trustees to have empathy with our cause and our beneficiaries.
You don’t necessarily need prior experience of charity trusteeship, as full induction and guidance from our trustees and staff will be provided, including access to external training, as needed.
We are looking for new trustees with some skills or experience in:
- Income-generation
- Employee & volunteer support/HR
- We also are looking for ‘general’ trustees who are interested in our mission and services

The Charity
Ships and seafarers touch our lives like no other group of individuals and are largely invisible from us as they ply the oceans every day to bring us 90% of our daily necessities. To bring us our supplies seafarers navigate treacherous weather conditions and are separated from their homes and families for long periods. They often experience isolation, impacting their mental health. They can be abandoned by irresponsible ship owners, and they can be jailed through no fault of their own.
The Mission to Seafarers has been helping bring practical, emotional, and spiritual support to seafarers and their families since 1856. We are well established and well-known throughout the maritime world. Across our nine regions, our network of 200 port operations in 50 countries provides emergency assistance and the hand of friendship to those who find themselves lonely and isolated in a foreign port.
The Mission to Seafarers is a Christian charity closely linked with the Church of England and the wider Anglican Communion. While this is central to its purposes, it also enjoys a wide diversity of trustees, staff, volunteers and supporters, prides itself on the breadth of its partnerships, is deeply committed to the service of those of all faiths and none and expresses its “mission” in strongly holistic and practical ways.
The Board
The Charity is led by a high calibre Board of Trustees who are prominent leaders with wide experience of the shipping industry, leading members of the clergy or industry leaders with relevant experience. The Board is led by the Chairman, Thomas Boardley, who has over 30 years’ experience in the maritime sector, including several years as Marine Director at Lloyds Register.
The Trustees provide appropriate oversight, strategic direction, expertise, support and contacts for the Mission’s work and hold meetings a minimum of four times a year (usually January, April, July and October). The Board also has the following sub-committees which usually meet once or twice a year: Audit and Risk, Governance and Nominations, Grants and Programme, Investment, and Remuneration. Trustees are usually required to sit on a minimum of one committee and some Trustees serve as the lead Trustee for one of our nine regions, and act as a sounding board for the regional director. The position of Trustee is voluntary but reasonable expenses will be reimbursed by The Mission.
The Role
Each Trustee term lasts for three years and Trustees may be appointed to the Board for up to three consecutive three-year terms making nine consecutive years. Board meetings are normally held in London with a hybrid (online) option available for each meeting when Trustees are unable to attend in person. Meetings normally last about three hours and Trustees are expected to devote sufficient time to prepare for meetings and attend. The Remuneration Committee normally meets once a year with occasional ad hoc meetings as required.
Whilst the Charity has a large global footprint, most of its global work is carried out through locally employed personnel in the various regions, some of which are grant funded by the UK entity. The remit of the Remuneration Committee is therefore primarily ordained and lay staff in the United Kingdom with opportunity to contribute expertise in broader Board discussions including those relating to Human Resources Management globally.
Trustee Role Description
- Working with other Trustees to ensure that the Mission pursues its charitable object, as defined in its governing document, by developing and agreeing a long-term strategy.
- Ensuring that the charity complies with its governing document, charity law, company law, any other relevant legislation or regulations and principles of good governance.
- Placing the Mission’s beneficiaries at the forefront of all debates about strategic direction, budget-setting, planning and other relevant functions.
- Ensuring the effective and efficient administration of the charity and that appropriate policies and procedures are in place for good governance.
- Ensuring the financial stability of the charity and that the organisation applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its charitable object.
- Ensuring that the Mission defines its goals and evaluates performance against agreed targets.
- Safeguarding the reputation and values of the charity and leading by example.
- Protecting and managing the property of the charity and ensuring the proper investment of the charity’s funds.
- Participating in any board induction, training and evaluation identified as an individual trustee and as part of the board or committee.
In addition to the above statutory duties, each trustee is expected to use any specific skills, knowledge or experience they have to help the board of trustees reach sound decisions. This may involve scrutinising board papers, leading discussions, focusing on key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives, or other issues in which the trustee has special expertise.
Member of Remuneration Committee Role description
In addition to those duties and responsibilities performed by all trustees, this role involves being a member of the Remuneration Committee. Responsibilities include:
- Alongside other members of the Committee, contributing skills, experience and opinions in order to ensure adequate scrutiny of the Charity’s remuneration policy.
- Advising the Committee and the Board on the charity’s HR practices and remuneration strategy.
- Acting as a sounding board for the Chief Operating Officer on HR matters as required.
- Acting as Deputy Lead Safeguarding Trustee. Experience of safeguarding practice is not essential to fulfil this role.
- Representing the Mission at occasional events, meetings or functions as appropriate.
Person Specification
- Commitment to the charity’s purpose, values, and Christian ethos.
- Qualified human resources professional with demonstrable commercial awareness and knowledge of compensation and benefits.
- Ability to work effectively and collegiately as a member of the Board.
- Sound, independent judgement and a willingness to speak their mind.

Watford Mencap supports over 600 people with learning disabilities and their families in South West Herts. They are affiliated with Royal Mencap but are a self-funding and independent local charity that has provided services and support to local families for the past 70 years. They currently operate across 10 sites in Hertsmere, Three Rivers and Watford. It’s an exciting time of change for the charity, having recently bought a new building to bring together its head office and children’s centre along with their plans to develop a range of brand-new short breaks services in this exciting new central hub for the charity in Watford. Over the next 5 years they shall expand and develop this hub into a multipurpose site used by the charity and other local groups.
Watford Mencap is now looking to appoint their next Chair of Trustees – ideally, someone with previous experience of being a Chair or a Charity CEO who can demonstrate significant experience in helping an organisation with their strategy, governance and management. You will be enthusiastic about supporting people living with learning disabilities and want to Mencap develop the services they offer.
Trustees have a duty to ensure that the charity is well run, solvent, legally compliant, and working towards the charitable purpose for which it was established, and Trustee roles are an important and highly rewarding way to support an award winning organisation. Action for Stammering Children (ASC) is looking to recruit an enthusiastic and suitably qualified person to join our Trustee Board as Treasurer to replace our current Treasurer who has sadly come to the end of his term.
Who are Action for Stammering Children?
Action for Stammering Children is the UK charity for children and young people who stammer, their families, and the communities who support them. We are a small charity, founded in 1989, but one that punches above its weight and with Dr Ria Bernard, who joined us as Chief Executive in 2022, we have big ambitions!
We’re here to make sure that every child who stammers has the support, respect and confidence to live the life they want to lead.
We support and empower parents, caregivers and professionals; facilitate and champion research; and campaign for changes in policy and societal attitudes
What do we do?
Information, community and support
We provide resources, advice and guidance for children and young people who stammer, their families, and the professionals who support them.
Changing policies and attitudes
We make sure the voices of children and young people who stammer are heard. We work with politicians and other decision makers to ensure the unique needs of children who stammer are reflected in public policy. But we know we can’t stop there. That’s why we campaign to challenge prejudices and misconceptions, seeking to change how society treats stammering and promote acceptance.
Championing research
We support and promote research into childhood stammering in order to build understanding and feed into our advocacy work, informing positive changes in policy and practice.
Our team
ASC currently has a staff team of three (one of whom is part-time) but we hope shortly to recruit a part-time book-keeper and an events co-ordinator, in order to be able to deliver on our ambitious strategic objectives.
Our Board of Trustees has been chaired by Dame Jane Roberts since 2021. With a number of trustees having come to the end of their term, we have had a number of trustees join the board recently including a new Company Secretary and two new trustees who had previously been members of ASC’s Youth Panel. With the Chair, the Company Secretary has been reviewing our governance to ensure that we conduct ourselves in line with best practice in charity governance. The Youth Panel is made up of young people who themselves stammer and who inform our strategic direction as well as engage in projects of their own. Our Annual Report for 2022-23 is available on the Charity Commission website, in addition to Trustees’ Reports for previous years.
Executive and Non-Executive, we are a professional but friendly bunch who would extend a warm welcome to a new Treasurer as well as ensure that there was a generous handover period with the current Treasurer.
Who are we looking for as Treasurer?
We would like to attract a qualified accountant, perhaps still working, perhaps recently retired. You might have a personal connection to stammering but this is not required. Your interest, enthusiasm and experience are the most important.

Role description of the Treasurer
Purpose
- To monitor the financial matters of the organisation and report to the Board of trustees at regular intervals on its financial health in line with good practice and in accordance with the governing document and legal requirements
- To oversee arrangements for risk management and ensure that these are adequate to organisational need, governance requirements and legal obligations.
Main responsibilities:
- Oversee the framework of internal controls and, in conjunction with the Company Secretary and Chair, the charity’s policies, procedures and delegated responsibilities in line with good governance, legal and regulatory requirements
- Oversee and review the preparation of budgets, management accounts and the annual financial statements, ensuring that they are brought regularly and in a timely manner to the Board
- Monitor and advise on the financial viability of the charity, including the adequacy and use of charitable reserves and other funds
- Oversee the risk management framework, ensuring that the risk register is brought regularly to the Board for review
- Develop a working knowledge of the activities, services and products of Action for Stammering Children
- Provide advice and financial analysis to other Board members
- Play a key role in the annual accounts, budgeting, cash flow and management accounts processes
- Act as a liaison with the external auditors
- Monitor the charity’s reserves and use of funds
- Act as a counter signatory on all financial transactions and applications to funders when required

Purpose of role:
The Board of Trustees is responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of Wandsworth Care Alliance (WCA).
Scope and objectives:
Trustees have a duty individually and collectively to:
- Determine the overall direction and development of WCA through good governance and clear strategic planning.
- Ensure that WCA pursues the objectives defined in its governing documents, and complies with charity law, company law, employment legislation, and with all other relevant legislation, constantly striving for best practice in governance.
- Uphold the financial responsibilities invested in their position, undertaking such duties in a way that adds to public confidence and trust in WCA.
- Ensure that WCA uses its resources in pursuit of its charitable objects.
Main duties:
- To contribute actively to the Board’s role in providing direction for WCA, in setting overall policy and in maintaining a framework of good governance and accountability, and in evaluating performance against agreed targets.
- To give clear direction, leadership, guidance, and advice to the WCA director and staff.
- To safeguard the good name and values of WCA and to act as an ambassador for the organisation.
- To provide vision, inspiration, and support to the WCA director and staff.
- To ensure the effective and efficient administration of WCA.
- To ensure the financial stability of WCA.
- To appoint the director and monitor his/her performance.
- To use specific skills, knowledge, or experience to help the Board of Trustees to reach sound decisions.
This may involve:
- Scrutinising Board papers;
- Contributing to or leading Board discussions;
- Acting as a board champion for a particular area of WCA’s work;
- Identifying and focusing on key issues;
- Providing guidance on new initiatives;
- Being part of a working group.
Duty of care:
Each Trustee will:
- Apply reasonable care and skills as a Trustee, using their knowledge and experience to ensure that WCA is well run and efficient;
- Be ready to consider the need for external professional advice on matters where there may be material risk to the charity, or where the Trustees may be in breach of their duties;
- Safeguard the good name and values of WCA.
- Maintain absolute confidentiality about sensitive information received in the course of responsibilities as a Trustee.
Each Trustee will:
- Ensure that the charity is and will remain solvent; keeping informed of the charity’s activities and financial position;
- Avoid undertaking activities that might place the charity’s property, funds, assets or reputation at undue risk.
Each Trustee is required to act reasonably and prudently in all matters relating to the charity and must always bear the interests of WCA in mind.
Section 72(1) of the Charities Act 1993 disqualifies anyone who:
- Has been convicted of an offence involving deception or dishonesty unless the conviction is spent.
- Is an un-discharged bankrupt.
- Has previously been removed from trusteeship of a charity by the court or the Charity Commissioners.
- Is under a disqualification order under the Company Directors Disqualification Act 1986.
It is an offence to serve as a charity trustee while disqualified unless the Charity Commission has given a waiver under section 72(4) of the Charities Act 1993.
Accountability:
The law imposes a duty of care on Trustees to act responsibly and prudently in all matters relating to their charity and to act in the best interests of the charity.
WCA is a registered Charity and Company Limited by guarantee and Trustees are therefore accountable to the members, the Charity Commission, and to Companies House (as company directors).
Suitability as a WCA Trustee will include many of the following:
- Commitment to Wandsworth Care Alliance (WCA).
- Willingness to devote the necessary time and effort.
- Availability to attend meetings regularly.
- Strategic vision.
- Good, independent judgement.
- Ability to think creatively.
- Willingness to participate actively in discussions, listening to others and con- tributing accordingly.
- To use professional experience and any technical skills and knowledge to contribute to Trustee decision making.
- Ability to work effectively as a member of a team.
- Ambassadorial ability and willingness to represent WCA in a range of situations.
- Experience of involvement in community or residents’ groups and/or in building community involvement.
- Commercial awareness including, but not limited to: marketing, branding, fundraising and social media.

The role

The person

While previous experience as a trustee is beneficial, it’s not essential. Key qualities include strategic planning, performance monitoring, and effective team collaboration. Trustees should demonstrate good governance knowledge, sound judgement, and a values-driven approach. An understanding of the voluntary sector’s context in Scotland, coupled with the ability to challenge constructively and work collectively, is crucial to support SCVO’s mission and long-term vision.
