The Zone Plymouth is an established and well-respected local charity dedicated to supporting and empowering young people aged 13–25. Operating in Plymouth for over 35 years, the charity delivers a range of commissioned services in partnership with other agencies, including sexual health, mental health, homelessness prevention, targeted school-based support for emotional health and substance use, and interagency support for young people in or leaving care.
With 24 staff (17.5 FTE) and 36 volunteers, The Zone has a strong foundation and is well positioned to leverage its strengths to achieve its long-term ambitions. While navigating challenges such as cultural change, income diversification, and skills development, there are exciting opportunities to strengthen leadership, expand funding streams, and raise the charity’s profile across Plymouth. About the Role
The Chair of Trustees will provide strategic leadership and guidance to the Board, ensuring it functions effectively, meets its legal and regulatory obligations, and supports the charity to deliver meaningful outcomes for young people in Plymouth. This voluntary role is central to shaping the strategic direction of the charity, fostering a positive culture, and holding the senior team accountable.
Key responsibilities:

Ensure the Board functions effectively, meetings are led inclusively, and duties are carried out in line with legal and regulatory requirements.

Lead the Board in setting the charity’s strategic direction, creating a positive organisational culture, and holding staff accountable.

Support recruitment, induction, and development of Trustees, promoting diversity and inclusion.

Line-manage and support the CEO, providing constructive challenge and oversight.

Liaise with the Secretary to arrange meetings, set agendas, and chair meetings to ensure they are well-run and focused.

Approve the annual operations/business plan, budget, and risk management plan, and monitor progress against these.

Monitor Board decisions and agreed actions to ensure implementation in a timely manner.

Build strong, positive relationships with staff, volunteers, beneficiaries, and external stakeholders.

Act as an ambassador for The Zone, representing its values and interests in the community.

Our inpatient ward at Martlets helps us care for our patients and their families. The ward, comprising of two wings, has 14 bedrooms, each with its own en-suite bathroom and access to outside spaces. The rooms are designed to be calming and comfortable. The inpatient ward has a dedicated team of specialist doctors and nurses supported by health care assistants. Some people choose to spend their final weeks with us. However, most patients can go home once we have their symptoms under control.

Introduction
Have you given up smoking and know just how hard it can be? Would you like to use your experience to support others, stay active and give back to your community? Trafford Leisure is looking for local residents, who have previously smoked to become Volunteer activity and wellbeing supporters.
As a Smoke Free Support Volunteer, you’ll encourage people who are trying to quit smoking, help them stay active through walking, fitness, leisure or community activities, and use your lived experience to motivate and inspire. Volunteers will be supported with training.
What does a typical day look like?
As a Smoke Free Support Volunteer, your day will focus on motivating and supporting people who are trying to quit smoking. When you arrive to volunteer, you’ll be welcomed by a staff member. They will give you a brief overview of the plan for the day, the goals for participants, and highlight any new referrals or individuals who may benefit from extra encouragement.
As participants arrive, you will greet them warmly, helping them feel comfortable and understood. You may chat with people about their progress, check in on how they’re feeling, and offer reassurance based on your own smoke‑free journey.
You might encourage someone who is struggling, help them set small achievable goals, or share tips that helped you stay smoke‑free. If you notice someone who could benefit from extra support, you’ll signpost them to Trafford Leisure’s PAR team or fitness staff.
You may also help to create a sense of community within the group by encouraging people to look out for each other, sharing positive stories, celebrating small wins, and helping to build motivation week by week.
After the session, you might spend a few minutes chatting with participants, recording any key stories or successes (with their permission), and promoting the programme within your neighbourhood to encourage more local people to join.
