Health medical volunteer roles

At St John Ambulance, we are looking to develop our volunteering offer and become an even more integral part of our communities through delivering community first aid and education. 

We need people who have a passion for helping others, care about their communities and want to make a difference, supporting them to become safe and more resilient by sharing your first aid skills and knowledge. As a Community First Aider, you’ll deliver first aid to those in need through local events, as well as provide education to the public so that the ripple effect of First Aid grows.

Through supporting the growth of community partnerships, you will bring people along to our cause, growing our membership and fundraising base and spreading the message that First Aid Saves Lives. 

Through volunteering as a Community First Aider, you’ll get a huge sense of satisfaction and pride delivering an essential service. It’s great for you, great for your community and great for our nation, and it requires only a small commitment of your time. 

We will make sure you will have access to a proper induction to volunteering with SJA and the training you need for the role you take on. We will also provide you with a supportive environment while you are volunteering with us. Information about our volunteer roles are included in the role descriptions. What you can expect from SJA, and what we expect from those who volunteer with us, is included in the volunteer charter.

The Unit meets for 2hrs a week either on a Monday or a Tuesday evening in the Swale and Medway area.

We are looking to run a volunteering selection session between  27 -29th May 2025.

If you are successful you will need to undertake induction & training for role at these dates:
Welcome Event (Induction) - 30th May 2025 (18:00 -21:00) in Queenborough
Training - Community First Aid Course - Day 1 05/07/25 & 1Day 2 12/07/25 - Must attend both days to attain the qualification.

We will be running a number of information events locally and these are:
Selection Events for this role will be held on the evenings of 23 and 24 April 2025. 23 April will be at Southampton (Bitterne) HQ, and 24 April will be at Southampton (Millbrook) HQ.

Welcome Events will be scheduled at Southampton (Bitterne) and Southampton (Millbrook) HQs. Dates TBC.

Community First Aider course will be held at Southampton (Bitterne) HQ. Date TBC.

All individuals will be interviewed via teams or at a mass interview venue.

We are looking to run a volunteering selection session and interviews between 26/05/2025 - 09/06/2025

Training for role - You will be required to undertake training both face to face and computer based, traveling to training venues where possible.

Skanda Vale Hospice offers unhurried, highly individualised care and respite to families affected by life-limiting illnesses, completely free of charge. What will I be doing?

• Providing skilled nursing care, administering medication, managing symptoms, and helping with personal care.

• Carrying out thorough, holistic patient assessments and developing care plans.

• Building trusting relationships with patients, families and colleagues.

• Keeping accurate and up-to-date records of patient care.

• Offering support and advice to patients and families.

• Working collaboratively with other team members to support genuinely patient-centred care.

How much time should I give?

10 hours or 1 shift minimum per month (averaged over the year).

What do I need to have?

• Registered Nurse qualification with current registration and indemnity insurance to practise without restrictions.

• Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

• Strong clinical assessment and nursing skills.

• Ability to communicate effectively with sensitivity and respect with people from diverse backgrounds.

• Empathy, with a patient-centred approach to care.

• Ability to respond well to changing circumstances.

• Composure in potentially stressful situations and the ability to respond promptly to critical events. 

• A permanent UK address or a visa that allows you to stay and volunteer in the UK (unfortunately we cannot sponsor visa applications). 

What training and support will I be given?

You will receive comprehensive induction and training to familiarise you with hospice policies and procedures as well as ongoing support and supervision from our Lead Nurse / Deputy Lead Nurse to ensure you feel confident and valued in your role. We also offer a range of team wellbeing and development opportunities.

At all times provide specialist, clinical, social and holistic care to undertake clinical assessment and interventions those individuals in the pre-hospital environment, which may include stadia, concerts, motorsports, road races etc. This may encompass working on both ambulances / FRV’s and within treatment units as required.

Successful candidates will be registered Paramedics with the HCPC and be able to provide evidence of CPD activity within the previous 12 months.

This will mainly involve working in mobile treatment centres or temporary event medical centres.

 Successful candidates will be registered registered medical practitioners with the GMC, without cautions or restrictions, and hold a licence to practice outside of an approved practice setting.

Interviews will be conducted at District/County level as required.

• Sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, dusting and disinfecting surfaces in bedrooms, bathrooms and throughout the hospice.

• Washing, drying, and ironing laundry.

• Disposing of waste (general and clinical), including recycling.

• Helping with infection control by following our in-house procedures and using personal protective equipment when needed.

• Working as part of a wider team to keep the building fresh, clean and welcoming.

How much time should I give?

Completely flexible, whatever you can offer – some volunteers offer time every week, others support on a monthly basis at the end of respite stays, some help quarterly with deep cleans or just occasionally to prepare or clear up around special events in our calendar.
