Central England Law Centre provides specialist legal support to clients in Coventry and Birmingham. We use our legal expertise to improve the lives of those who are often vulnerable and socially excluded due to poverty, illness or disability.
What will you be doing?
We are looking for up to three Trustees to join our Board. We are seeking applications from individuals who represent a range of backgrounds, and especially those with an interest in how embedding a knowledge of rights within communities can help reduce inequalities and challenge unfair systems, ultimately empowering people to live better lives.
As a member of our Board, your purpose is to work with other Trustees to form an effective governing body which holds the Law Centre senior leadership team to account for its work, providing leadership for all activities and performance of the organisation.
Alongside your fellow Trustees, your responsibilities will consist of:
- Shaping and agreeing the strategic direction of the organisation
- Monitoring and evaluating performance with the objective of fulfilling the Law Centre’s vision, mission and aims
- Safeguarding the Law Centre’s reputation, vision and mission
- Ensuring that the Law Centre remains financially stable, and is managing its assets effectively in pursuance of its objectives
- Overseeing compliance with all relevant legislation including employment, company, charity and health and safety law
- Ensuring all work is conducted within the framework of the Law Centre’s Memorandum and Articles of Association
- Assuming legal responsibility for the Law Centre’s staff and volunteers
- Acting as employer of the Law Centre’s staff
In undertaking these responsibilities, we would look to you to:
- Prepare for and attend trustee meetings (1 main Board meeting per month, plus any meetings of sub-committees which you opt to join)
- Understand and be fully committed to the vision, mission and aims of the Law Centre
- Lend your specific expertise either for one-off advice and projects or to work on a sub-committee
- Support all decisions following agreement by the Board
- Maintain the highest levels of confidentiality on all Law Centre matters

The merger of Fight for Sight and Vision Foundation, which took place on 1st April 2023, will enable us to address both questions. By combining our strengths and expertise we are now the only significant national funder with the efficiency,

We are a new organisation forged from two ambitious charities: Fight for Sight and Vision Foundation. Our single, unifying mission is to save sight and change lives.
It is a mission that reflects two urgent questions everyone faces when they receive a diagnosis of sight loss: ‘How do I stop this?’ and ‘How do I live my life?’

THE MERGER
Fight for Sight funds breakthrough research and life-changing services to build a more equitable future for blind and partially sighted people by accelerating breakthroughs in multiple sight loss conditions.

OUR FUTURE
Our principal role is as a grant-maker. We award grants to the scientific community that could lead to scientific breakthroughs and treatments to stop eye diseases from progressing. In the future, we believe research can prevent people from losing sight and reverse sight loss. We invest to advance treatments that will cure eye disease and protect and grow the community of world-class scientists, technologists, and data scientists who can deliver tomorrow’s breakthroughs. Historically, Vision Foundation has funded innovations that directly impact people who are blind or partially sighted, from music classes for children to projects that take eye tests into at-risk communities. We invest in programmes, organisations and activities that deliver equity for and with blind and visually impaired people.
As a grant-maker, we are change-makers, accelerators and drivers of impact. We are bold, energetic, challenging, disruptive, tenacious, and determined.
We aren’t afraid to tackle the challenges facing the sight loss community, either. Recent campaigns include The Unseen, which unearthed the shocking scale and nature of domestic abuse among blind and partially sighted people, and See My Skills, which addressed high unemployment rates. The charity excels at working in partnership with others towards creating a more equitable society for the sight loss community.
As we progress, we’ll scale the impact of projects like these, look beyond the nation’s capital, and drive systemic change. We’ll need to secure the funds to invest in our trusted partners to achieve our ambitions. We’ll continue to fundraise by engaging with supporters and companies through legacies, events such as the London Marathon, and our network of charity shops.
The evidence we commission influences policy and decision-making to demand equality for all.
We’ll shortly have a new name that reflects our united ambitions, so it’s an exciting time for us and the people we serve.
OUR FINANCES
The charity is in a strong position financially, with a high level of reserves that we intend to draw down over the coming years as we focus on investing in sustainable growth and increasing our impact. Compared to many charities, we
have well diversified income streams, predictable costs, and are in the fortunate position to hold a sizable portfolio of investments. Our plans for the short and medium term are to invest in our income generation infrastructure, and to significantly increase the amounts of funding we can put to our charitable purpose.

Fight for Sight / Vision Foundation is the only organisation in the sight loss sector with an Executive Leadership Team that has over half of its members with lived experience of sight loss.
The Board currently numbers ten trustees, including our newly appointed Chair.

As the most senior leaders in our charity, trustees play a pivotal role in guiding our strategic direction, amplifying our impact, and ensuring the fulfilment of our mission to save sight and change lives. MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Leadership & Planning
- Provide leadership and strategic guidance to the charity, aligning efforts with the mission and values of the organisation.

Governance
- Ensure effective governance, decision-making, and compliance with legal and ethical standards.

Engagement

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Specialist experience
At this time, we are particularly interested in candidates who have leadership experience in:

TERMS OF APPOINTMENT
Remuneration
This role is not accompanied by any financial remuneration, although reasonable expenses may be claimed.
Time commitment
While the exact time commitment may vary based on the charity’s needs and priorities, we anticipate the following general expectations:
- A minimum of four Board meetings per year
- Up to four subcommittee meetings per year (the specific committee depending on skills and experience)

The Best You can Be Mentoring Programme is a community-led initiative supported by the Mercers fund. It aims to engage young boys and girls from the ages 9-18 years of ethnic minority backgrounds living in or attending a school in Hackney, in a 12- month mentoring relationship.
The programme focuses on three key areas:

Activities might include helping with homework, helping students with reading, writing, maths and science, life skills, understanding the working world and sharing skills and experiences, playing a board game, financial literacy support, CV writing, writing an article for the mentoring magazine and group trips to places of interest.
Note: Mentors must be willing to undergo an enhanced DBS check and a comprehensive mentoring and safeguarding training programme before being matched with a student. The ACS will cover the cost of the DBS check and provide training.

We are currently seeking to appoint new Board members to join the International Board of Amnesty International. As a Board member, you are a committed individual who will bring your expertise and skills to help us deliver our ambitious strategy and advance our mission and vision of a world in which every person enjoys freedom, equality and justice.
Ours is an active organisation made up of inspiring and dedicated volunteers from all walks of life who bring a wealth of expertise and experience to the organization and are passionate about defending human rights. International Board members serve as essential leaders and decision-makers and play a pivotal role in ensuring effective organizational management, long-term impact and success.
We would like to hear from candidates from a variety of professional backgrounds and with particular experience in global governance. The role of International Board member is modestly remunerated and expenses for travel on Amnesty business are reimbursed.
There are currently International Board members from Australia, Germany, Malaysia, Mexico and New Zealand. Interested individuals resident in any of these five countries are not eligible to apply this year.

PROFILE
We are looking for ONE suitably qualified and motivated International Board Members with the following competencies:
-Governance in other international organisations
To succeed in this role you will have a proven track record in either a senior executive management or governance role within a commercial or non-profit international organisation. Experience in the non-profit sector is welcomed but not essential.
Essential global governance skills:
-Global Perspective: Demonstrates understanding of global trends, including Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) trends relevant to the organization's mission. These trends encompass a wide range of topics including climate change mitigation, promoting workforce and board equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI), human rights and good governance critical to ensuring the responsible development and ethical use and transparency of artificial intelligence technology.
-Strategic leadership and execution: Demonstrated experience of successfully implementing organizational strategies in organizations of similar scale and complexity as Amnesty International. Proven track record of ensuring alignment between Board and management for optimal organisational performance, ideally in a Trustee, Board member or senior leadership role.
-Legal and regulatory compliance: Proficient in ensuring the organization's adherence to legal requirements. Experience of working with international organisations to implement policies and standards needed to strengthen governance and accountability.
-Risk management: Comprehensive grasp of the financial, operational and ESG risks linked to organizations with a presence in multiple locations.
-Ethical leadership: Commitment to promoting and enabling principled and value driven leadership, operating with integrity, openness, transparency and accountability.
-Cross-cultural competence: Ability to navigate and collaborate with diverse stakeholders. Demonstrates a proactive commitment to fostering EDI.
-Diplomacy: Strong diplomatic skills to represent the organisation effectively in international settings. Provides an independent perspective gained from working in other international organisations to positively challenge the organization.
WHAT'S INVOLVED?
The International Board is made up of nine members including the International Treasurer, who are elected to office for a three-year term with a maximum of two consecutive terms by the Global Assembly, Amnesty International's highest governing body.
As an International Board member you will play a key role in setting and monitoring the strategic direction of Amnesty International and ensuring the organization lives up to its shared vision, aims, and values.

Key governance responsibilities include but are not limited to:
-Ensuring Amnesty International complies with its governing documents (the Articles of Association), UK company law, charity law, the Amnesty International Statute any other relevant legislation or regulations;
-Providing high-quality, independent fiduciary oversight of Amnesty International's financial resources;
-Discharging responsibility for strategic leadership, accountability for managing institutional risks, whether financial, operational, reputational, environmental, sector-related or legal;
-Ensuring transparency and accountability and actively holding International Secretariat management to account for delivering the organization's strategy;
-Appointing and supporting the Secretary General and monitoring their performance;
-Acting as a responsible employer by ensuring there are appropriate policies and procedures in place to care for the welfare of International Secretariat staff, including a safeguarding policy across the organization;
-Reviewing organizational health indicators and performance information.

For over seventy years the Osteopathic Foundation (initially the Osteopathic Education Foundation) has been supporting osteopathic education, research, and development. We fund research and education activities through our grant-giving programmes. Since 2000, we have distributed over £1 million of support to advance osteopathic practice for public benefit.

Our mission is to support and enable the people who use our services to lead fulfilling lives, to be involved in their local wider community, and to have access to the same opportunities as all members of society.
Mid Norfolk Mencap was established since 1977, and every year we provide residential living, social opportunities, and specialised Community Outreach support for more than 100 people with a learning disability in Norfolk. However, with around 16,500 adults in Norfolk with a learning disability, we know we can do so much more.
This is an exciting time for us as we work to grow and strengthen our services. As a trustee you will play a vital role in helping us deliver a stronger and more sustainable organisation for the benefit of our service users, their families, and for the staff who work to deliver those services.
Position: Trustee
Location: Trustee Board meetings and many of our charity’s activities take place in Dereham. In addition, some work may be required remotely using Zoom/ Teams, or in other parts of Norfolk from time to time.
Salary: This position is unpaid but reasonable expenses may be paid.
Responsibilities
This role is suited to candidates who can demonstrate professional or skills-based knowledge of benefit to the charity. We would particularly welcome applications from people with experience in the third sector, PR, fundraising, governance, risk management, management and law, and accountancy.

Training
You will be given a basic induction to the charity and opportunities to meet with the senior management team. We also strongly encourage trustees to spend time participating in our services delivery, getting to know our staff and volunteers – and most importantly, our beneficiaries. We will customise a training and familiarisation package for the successful candidate based on prior knowledge and experience.

About the role
Lay members of Council have a vital part to play in the governance of the University and bring knowledge and experience of particular value, given the nature of the environment in which universities work.
Lay Members are expected to play an appropriate part in ensuring that the necessary business of Council is carried on efficiently, effectively, and in a manner appropriate for the proper conduct of public business. You will be expected to make rational and constructive contributions to debate and to make your knowledge and expertise available to Council as opportunities arise.
Members have a responsibility to ensure that the governing body acts in accordance with the instruments of governance of the University and exercises efficient and effective use of the resources of the University to meet its charitable objectives, maintain long-term financial viability, and safeguard its assets.
Members do not play an executive role, which is primarily advisory and facilitating, and we expect Members to establish a constructive and supportive, but challenging, working relationship with the University.
Members are covered by the University’s Professional Indemnity cover in respect of fulfilling their duties.
Members of Council are appointed for three years and membership may be renewed for up to two more terms of three years. It is hoped that Lay Members will serve on one or more of the Council’s sub-committees.
As such, the University is seeking Lay Council Members who can commit up to 16 days per year to this role, which roughly equates to a time commitment of one to two days per month.
You will be provided with a full induction and training opportunities to support your work on Council.
