Whether you’re a jobseeker interested in a career in construction or woodwork, a student or recent college graduate seeking experience, or just someone with spare time on your hands, wanting to do something positive and meet new people, volunteering with the Touch Wood project at EMERGE 3Rs may be just the ticket!

Touch Wood is a wood recycling and upcycling initiative, which collects surplus and waste wood and timber and gives it a new lease of life, preventing it from being burned, chipped, or dumped in landfill.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

* Preparing wood for resale

* Assisting with the construction of wooden products, from small household items to pieces of furniture

Our Touch Wood volunteers are able to gain skills in practical woodworking, as we offer hands-on experience of working with reclaimed timber; from making basic lumber products ready for resale, through to assisting with the creation of bespoke items, such as kitchen equipment and home and garden furniture.

Full training in woodworking and health and safety is provided, along with Personal Protection Equipment.

The UK generates around 5 million tonnes of wood waste every year, but less than 1% is reused. Touch Wood rescues waste timber that would otherwise be landfilled or turned into woodchip; creating jobs and training opportunities for disadvantaged local people at the same time. We collect from construction sites, industrial estates and other commercial sources, reclaiming everything from pallets to indoor cycle tracks – you name it, we take it! Anything we can’t reuse is locally recycled, so nothing goes to waste. This reduces the carbon emissions associated with disposing of waste wood, offers cost savings for DIY enthusiasts, and provides training and job potential to volunteers in the workshop. Some of the timber we work with comes from high profile sources, including the entire track of the Manchester Velodrome cycling centre and wood removed in the recent refurbishment of Manchester’s historic Town Hall!

Our skilled team of staff and volunteers often use reclaimed timber to create beautiful and practical products, such as home and garden furniture. We regularly create bespoke pieces to order; some of it for famous clients like Olympic cycling champions Jason and Laura Kenny, for whom we made a table from the Manchester Velodrome track.

Please be advised that our volunteers require a fair level of physical fitness and manual dexterity as the role is entirely practical.

Our Touch Wood workshop and wood store is open Mon-Fri, 8.30am - 4pm.
We occupy a unit at Maynard House, inside New Smithfield Market, in Openshaw, North Manchester, which is accessed from the main entrance on Whitworth Street East (off Ashton Old Road). The site is served well by buses, and we have free parking onsite, as well as secure storage racks for pushbikes.

You must be resident in the UK and living in Greater Manchester, or within easy commuting distance of our base, in order to volunteer with us. There are no exceptions to this rule. This is because we require volunteers to be able to reliably commit to regular shifts for some of our roles. We are unable to offer sponsorship for overseas applicants.

We aim to become an Accredited Museum and to significantly improve the look and feel of the museum, and to become well known in the sport of Badminton.

What will you be doing?

We are looking for a number of additional Trustees to actively participate in the achievement of the strategy. We are looking for skills in fundraising, museum operations, financial overview, web and social media, and ideally but not necessarily deep seated knowledge of the sport.

What are we looking for?

Fundraising, museum operations, financial experience, some with a deep knowledge of the sport of Badminton.

What difference will you make?

They will actively participate in the strategic plan, taking leadership in their field of expertise. Its an exciting time for the Museum and will be for the new and existing Trustees. Gaining accreditation itself is a multi-year project involving the creation of policies, and best practice museum processes. Gaining enough funding is a crucial part of the strategy, as is animation of the museum, and significantly improving the public awareness of the museum.

Expenses
We reimburse travel expenses up to £6 for car drivers, and up to £5 for public transport costs.
Up to £3 is given towards the cost of lunch if a volunteer has special dietary requirements. (We provide lunch for our volunteers, so will contribute towards the cost of a volunteer's meal, should they bring their own, if what we are offering in the canteen isn't considered suitable; for example, a diet that's restricted for reasons of health, religion, or ethics).

About Us
As a sustainability charity, we take surplus food that's donated to us and redistribute it to people in need.
The front line initiatives we support include food banks, schools, community groups and charities who, in turn, help people who are disadvantaged by poverty.

Our vital work supports people experiencing extreme hardship and prevents perfectly good food going to landfill, where it would otherwise contribute to climate warming. 

We need helping hands in our busy warehouse to receive and catalogue supplies, to load and unload vans, and to prepare orders for delivery. This role is vital to the work of FareShare, ensuring that the food in our warehouse is correctly sorted, labelled and organised into orders placed by our charities and community groups.

Our volunteer opportunities are available Monday to Friday, for a whole or half day, with shifts between 8:30-am - 12:30pm and 12:30 - 4:30pm. Volunteers are typically involved for one day a week. We are flexible around the hours you can offer us.

What will I be doing?

Receiving, sorting, cataloguing and storing chilled and ambient surplus food in a warehouse, and preparing orders for delivery.

Ensuring food quality and safety by checking ‘use by’ and ‘best before’ dates.

Sorting and unpacking deliveries; categorising and recording food.

Assembling food orders placed by charities and community groups.

Maintaining health and safety and food hygiene standards. 

Helping with cleaning and other tasks identified by warehouse staff.

The Practicalities

Time commitment:

We have four full board meetings per year. Three of these are online and last for two hours, and one longer full day meeting is in person (likely in London. All costs will be covered). Directors are expected to attend these, and come prepared, having read all board papers in advance.

We have additional committees such as Finance and Governance, and Directors will be expected to join a committee. There may be other events that Directors are invited to attend, and other opportunities to get involved.

We also expect that Directors will provide ad hoc support based on their expertise and available time. We estimate the time commitment to be up to half a day per month.

We are looking specifically to appoint up to three more Directors, and are seeking expertise in the following areas to add to our board:

Finance - such as small company or charity accounting, financial policies and systems.

People and Ops - such as safeguarding, HR policy and law, good practice and people development, progressive and anti-oppressive practice.

SportCheer England seeks a strategic, hands-on Chair to lead them to full NGB status and champion inclusive governance and athlete-centred impact in a fast-evolving sport.

Who we are

SportCheer England (SCE) is the officially recognised national governing body for cheerleading in England, endorsed by the International Cheer Union (ICU) and on track for full recognition by Sport England. Representing over 89,000 athletes across recreational, competitive and elite levels, we are the voice and guardian of one of the UK’s fastest-growing sports.

Cheerleading in England is a dynamic, inclusive, and high-performance sport, encompassing both acrobatic team routines and performance cheer styles. From grassroots clubs to world championship podiums, England is a global leader pioneering ParaCheer divisions and consistently medalling at the ICU World Championships.

Since our formation in 2019, we’ve built a strong governance foundation, launched a formal membership structure and achieved pre-recognition approval from Sport England. As we enter a pivotal phase of growth and sector influence, we are seeking a strategic and hands-on Executive Chair to help shape the future of cheerleading in England.

About the role

We are recruiting an Executive Chair to lead SportCheer England through a critical period of operational development, governance maturity and sector impact.

This is a hybrid role, combining the strategic oversight of a traditional Chair with the collaborative, hands-on support of an executive leader. You will guide the Board in setting direction, ensure alignment with Sport England’s Tier 1 governance standards and help deliver key milestones on our journey to full NGB recognition.

The Executive Chair will work closely with the CEO and senior leadership team, champion inclusive and athlete-centred governance, and represent SCE externally with credibility and care. You’ll also play a vital role in shaping our membership offer, supporting financial sustainability and modelling the values that underpin our sport.

This is a voluntary role with reasonable expenses reimbursed. Time commitment is approximately 4–5 days per month, with flexibility to accommodate operational demands during this formative phase.

Who we are looking for

We welcome candidates with proven leadership experience at board or executive level, ideally within sport, youth or voluntary sectors. You’ll bring a strong understanding of UK sports governance, safeguarding and organisational development, alongside a commitment to equity, inclusion and athlete welfare.

You may have prior experience within a national governing body or have led organisations through growth, change or recognition phases. Familiarity with the Code for Sports Governance and lived experience that reflects the diversity of the cheerleading community are highly valued.

Make a difference to the lives of rescue cats! We have a number of roles within our cat rescue based in York. 

Home visitors

Join our fantastic volunteer team to help us improve the welfare & quality of life for the cats & kittens in our care.

Our home visit volunteers help us to assess each home environment and a families circumstances to ensure our cats are suitably matched to their new family. This is a vital step in our rehoming process to ensure our cats get the happy ending they deserve.​

You can dedicate as much or as little of your free time to this role- picking up outstanding home visits as and when you can.

This role can also be done remotely (from home) if necessary or preferred.

We rely on our fantastic team of dedicated volunteers to continue our work and would love for you to join us.

Fundraising

We are looking for cat loving people with a little free time and lots of ideas to join our fundraising team!
 

This role includes all aspects of fundraising including organising and taking charge of ideas/ events with the support of the wider team and helping out at events. 

We need your help to raise much needed funds to support the work that we do and help give cats and kittens in need a better future. 

Fostering

Join our fantastic volunteer team to help us improve the welfare and quality of life of cats & kittens in our care.​

We are looking for people to join our wonderful supportive team of foster carers! 

Caring for cats/ kittens in your home while they undergo rehabilitation and wait to be adopted doesn't cost you a penny. We provide full training & support along the way.

Transport Volunteers

We are always looking for transport volunteers to join our team. This role involves transporting animals, equipment and donations too and from various locations in and around the York area. We may also occasionally need help transporting cats and equipment from further afield.

Role overview:

​As the Volunteer Fundraising Coordinator, you will play a vital role in helping us raise the essential funds that keep our cat rescue work going. This position is key to ensuring we can continue to provide care, veterinary treatment, food, and a safe haven to cats in need. You will take the lead on planning and delivering fundraising activities and work closely with the wider team to help grow support for our charity.

• Fundraising campaigns: Plan, lead and deliver creative fundraising initiatives (both online and in-person).

We are searching for an enthusiastic, hard working volunteer to take on President’s responsibility and oversee the chapter in LONDON. They will run the chapter and ultimately be responsible for activities carried out by committee members and volunteers. The President must coordinate with their committee to ensure that all of the needs of the charity are met and the law, constitution and handbook are not broken.

The Chapter Secretary ensures the smooth running of the local chapter by managing communication, meetings, and documentation. The Secretary is responsible for organising chapter meetings, prepare agendas, take structured minutes, and upload them to Onedrive, ensuring they are shared with all attendees. In addition the Secretary also help coordinate volunteer socials and support chapter activities.

The Chapter Secretary should have strong organisational and administrative skills, with the ability to coordinate meetings, manage calendars, and keep accurate records. Attention to detail, good communication skills and time management are essential in addition to being reliable, proactive and collaborative..

Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, OneDrive.

Helping to coordinate their committee to ensure that all of the needs of the charity are met and the law, constitution and handbook are not broken.
