About SOS!SEN

SOS!SEN is an independent UK charity dedicated to helping families secure the right educational support for children and young people with SEND. Our team of over 70 volunteers with firsthand experience provides legally-based advice and practical guidance to confidently navigate the SEND system. We support parents, carers, and young people through every phase of their journey. With a 95% success rate at Tribunal and 1,400 helpline calls answered yearly, we empower all children to reach their full potential through the provisions they deserve. We also raise awareness of SEND challenges through training, campaigning, and lobbying, ensuring that legal duties to children are fulfilled.

We are the independent champion for people who use health and social care services in Islington. We’re here to make sure that those running services put people at the heart of care. The treasurer's role is to oversee the financial health of the organisation and ensure that it's managed in a way that protects its financial integrity.

What we are looking for:
• A finance professional. A knowledge of charity finance is an advantage.
• A strategic thinker with the ability to balance risk and opportunity.

Duties include:

• Working with the CEO and accountant on the presentation of budgets, internal management accounts and annual financial statements to the Board of Trustees.
• Ensuring, at a board level, that proper accounting records are kept, and that appropriate accounting procedures and controls are in place.
• Monitoring and advising on the financial viability of the charity.
• Overseeing financial controls and adherence to systems, regularly liaising with the CEO and accountant
• Being knowledgeable of the financial implications of the charity’s strategic plan, including overseeing the charity’s financial risk-management process
• Ensuring investments and assets are maximised.
• Working with the CEO and chair to oversee the development and implementation of systems for appraising, mitigating and reporting financial risk.
• Supporting the CEO/ accountant to ensure that the accounts are prepared and disclosed in the form required by relevant statutory bodies e.g. the Charity Commission
• Keeping the board informed about its financial duties and responsibilities and liaising with the CEO and chair to develop the financial understanding of the Board of Trustees.

Who are we?

We are the largest provider of palliative and end of life care and support children and their families in East Anglia, delivering a comprehensive range of services across our three hospices as well as in family homes, hospital and in the wider community.

Our primary focus is on meeting the needs of babies, children, young people and their families, working alongside them as they face complex, health, social and emotional issues. Over the past 30 years, EACH has developed an enviable reputation in the field of children’s palliative care, both in the UK and internationally.

We are very proud that our three hospices; The Nook (Norfolk), The Treehouse (Ipswich) and Milton (Cambridge) are rated OUTSTANDING by the Care Quality Commission.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for a talented, qualified nurse, allied health professional, wellbeing or clinical specialist to join our board of trustees to bring strong knowledge of clinical governance frameworks and healthcare regulations. You’ll bring valuable previous experience at a senior level to give specialised input on clinical governance to ensure safe, effective, and ethical delivery of EACH’s healthcare-related objectives. You will work with the Care leadership team to monitor adherence to healthcare standards, including those set by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Prior experience of maintaining clinical and quality standards and risk management in a clinical setting will be key to this role.  Ideally you will also be familiar with clinical safeguarding and regulatory compliance.

Our trustees drive our strategic development and hold our management team to account and the range of perspectives and lived experience trustees bring to board-level discussions helps us respond more effectively to our service users and the children and young people we support.

We would particularly like to hear from individuals who are well networked in our local communities across East Anglia (and the Cambridgeshire region would be advantageous).

We value hugely the contribution trustees make to EACH helping us to ensure our service users and families receive safe, well-led compassionate care.  You should be able to commit to four full day committee meetings per year (held in person at our hospice near Norwich) as well as four half day meetings held at our Milton (Cambridge) hospice. There is normally an additional one-day awayday meeting annually and some ad hoc activities, such as hospice quality visits or attendance at fundraising or community events in the East Anglia region.  Applicants will need to have their own transport.

You must be over 18 and eligible to act as a Charity Trustee in England.  We are looking ideally for a start date in around Spring 2025 with some flexibility.

• Training Coordinator: Develop and implement training programmes to equip our volunteers with the skills they need to succeed and thrive within the roles and within our charity.
• Policy Developer: Establish and maintain HR policies, systems, and procedures to support our start-up charity.
• Volunteer Advocate: Foster a positive volunteer experience, recognising their efforts and addressing any concerns.
• Team Builder: Create a close-knit team of dedicated, passionate, and committed volunteers who embody the values of SUNSHINE.

You will also be an Experience creator, making sure that everyone involved with SUNSHINE feels the positive, uplifting, vibrant and happy sunshine vibes.

As the Treasurer/Accountant, you will play a crucial role in our transformative mission. Your role will involve:

• Financial Steward: Manage and oversee the financial affairs of our charity, ensuring transparency and accountability.
• Budget Planner: Develop and monitor budgets, providing financial reports and insights to guide our strategic decisions.

1. Lived Experience: Trustees who have personal experience with social isolation or loneliness can provide us with valuable insights and empathy and guide us on our journey, especially when making key decisions.

2. Community Engagement and Partnership Building: Experience in community development and engagement would help us  reach the communities we serve and help us build and maintain strong community connections and partnerships.

3. Fundraising and Financial Management: Trustees with skills in fundraising, budgeting, and financial oversight can help ensure the charity’s financial health and sustainability, especially in getting hands on to write funding grant applications to help us generate income or to lead on fundraising events to help us kickstart our charity.

4. Governance and Compliance: Knowledge of charity governance, legal requirements, and compliance would help us ensure the charity operates within the law and follows best practices.

5. Strategic Planning: Trustees should be able to contribute to the strategic direction of the charity, helping to set goals and develop plans to achieve them.

6. Marketing and Communications: Experience in marketing, public relations, and communications can help us to raise awareness of the charity’s mission and attract support, as well as expand our reach to those who need our support.

We also accept applications from people from other backgrounds and experiences who can really help our brand new start-up charity make a real difference.

As a Trustee, you will play a crucial role in our transformative mission. Your role will involve:

• Governance Guardian: Oversee the governance of our charity, ensuring we operate within legal and ethical guidelines.
• Strategic Advisor: Provide strategic oversight and guidance to ensure our charity’s objectives are met.
• Fiduciary Steward: Monitor our financial health and ensure resources are used effectively to achieve our mission.
• Advocacy Ambassador: Represent SUNSHINE, advocating for our cause and building relationships with key stakeholders.
• Leadership Mentor: Support and mentor our team, embodying the values of SUNSHINE and fostering a culture of excellence and empathy.
