Job description

Share and learn as you work alongside a team of staff and volunteers helping to look after the objects in our care.

The Royal Air Force (RAF) Museum has over one million collection items, which require regular care so that the story of the RAF - past, present, and future – can be preserved for future generations. Conservators within the Small Objects Team treat and maintain items in the museum collection at the London site. Items within the category of Small Objects include, but are not limited to, archival materials, textiles, fine art, medals, and aircraft components. Volunteers would be joining Conservators behind the scenes to contribute to the important practical and analytical work necessary to ensure the museum collections are accessible to visitors and researchers.

 

What will I be doing?

·       Assisting with condition assessments and looking for agents of deterioration

·       Assisting with Preventative surface cleaning and maintenance of collection items as required

·       Assisting with the preparation of objects for exhibitions

·       Assisting with object movements across the museum

·       Assisting with the implementation of the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) system

·       Occasionally interact with the public, discussing your tasks and sharing your knowledge of the collection.
