Roots Academy exists to bridge this gap by providing a structured and transformative Islamic education that speaks directly to the needs and challenges of young Muslims today, delivered in an engaging and accessible form that removes barriers to access and provokes thought and action.
Role Summary.
The Finance Analyst plays a pivotal role in scaling its financial operations as the organization transitions into a charitable entity. This role involves collaborating closely with the Finance Lead to enhance and develop robust financial systems and policies. The position is key to ensuring the organization’s financial operations are scalable, compliant, and efficient.
Key tasks
Financial Operations & Reporting: Support monthly financial activities including bank reconciliations, transaction reviews, accounts payable and receivable, reimbursements, invoicing, and basic financial reporting.
Financial Controls & Compliance: Review transactions for appropriate approvals, supporting documentation, budget alignment, and adherence to Roots’ financial policies. Help maintain accurate records and a clear audit trail.
Budget Monitoring: Support budget-to-actual tracking by monitoring spending, identifying variances, and escalating potential budget issues or unusual transactions to the Finance Lead.
Process & Documentation: Maintain finance trackers and supporting documentation, assist with month-end close activities, and help ensure that finance processes are followed consistently across the organization.
Cross-Functional Support: Work with program leads, volunteers, and leadership to resolve financial questions, follow up on outstanding items, and support the timely completion of finance-related requests.
Week in this role
Typical week may include:

1 hour — Financial Operations: Review and process reimbursements, invoices, AP/AR items, and other transactional finance activities.

1 hour — Financial Controls & Reconciliations: Review transactions for appropriate approvals and documentation, update finance trackers, and support reconciliation activities.

1 hour — Process & Documentation: Maintain financial records, organize supporting documentation, and assist with improving or standardizing finance processes.

0.5 hour — Finance Team Meeting: Meet with the Finance Lead to review priorities, discuss outstanding items, and align on upcoming activities.
Average time commitment: 3–5 hours per week. Work can generally be completed flexibly throughout the week, with additional time potentially required around month-end.

Comfortable working with Excel/Google Sheets.

Interest in building financial systems within a growing non-profit organization.

Accounting, finance, business, or related experience is an asset.
