Outcast Activists Forum (OAF) was established in January 2020 and incorporated in August 2020 as a grassroots network of activists and likeminded people with an aim to bring about social change through empowering the community in the fight for gender equality, youth inclusion on the issues of social justice, women empowerment, the fight against poverty, unemployment, teenage marriages a pregnancies, address human rights-related abuses, environmental protection and revive the need for child education and com drug abuse and alcoholism.

OAF slogan “Amplifying voices, Enriching communities” represents the voices of the people in the nationwide suburbs, communities with several cases of unwanted pregnancies in adolescents, early child marriages, poor health, poverty, child abuse, and human rights abuse, and unemployment, lack of career guidance, inadequate information and poor livelihood. OAF started its operations by doing ground research on issues deteriorating society in the poor suburbs regionally.

Responsibilities
 

• They are looking for a VOLUNTEER Communications Officer they are rebranding and seek a talented and self-driven individual who has great written and spoken communication skills (English). A creative individual who can easily communicate their mission to the wider global audience through social media, blogs, newsletters, etc. We'll be happy to change the world together with you!

• Volunteer 2-3 hours per week remotely for 6+  months ��

As a community engagement volunteer you and your fellow branch members will create a range of activities to help spread the word about SSAFA within your community. What is a Helper?

SSAFA Helpers provide support to local SSAFA branches, so that the service to veterans and their families can run smoothly. Perhaps you could help out at an event, take care of some office admin, or give a talk about SSAFA?

We’ve been supporting the Armed Forces community since 1885. Our clients come from all backgrounds and age groups and may have served in WW2 or in a more recent conflict like the Falklands or Afghanistan.

There are SSAFA branches throughout the UK and overseas who support local volunteers to deliver services to veterans, serving personnel and their families. Some branches are divided into smaller divisions to ensure the best local service delivery. Each branch has a team of volunteer caseworkers, support volunteers, executive roles, and fundraisers.

We have peak times throughout the year when we need extra volunteers. Whether you enjoy organising behind the scenes or being out meeting the public, we need people who can offer some time on a flexible basis.

When would you be needed and where would you be based?

This role will suit you if you are looking to volunteer on a flexible basis as and when you are available, and we need extra help. You may be based in an office, at home, or out and about at events.

What would you be doing?

• Helping at public events by staffing stalls, stewarding etc
• Helping to distribute Christmas hampers to clients.
• Giving talks about SSAFA to schools and local groups
• Helping with office tasks like stuffing envelopes, ordering marketing materials

The remit of this role may change over the next 12-18 months depending on the outcome of a trial currently being undertaken.

There are SSAFA branches and service committees throughout the UK and overseas. We use local microsites and social media to raise awareness of our services, raise funds and find new volunteers. Digital Marketing volunteers help us maximise our message, keep content up to date and increase traffic to our sites.

What is a Caseworker?

Caseworkers visit clients to work out what type of support they need. You will listen without judgement to assess and provide tailored support to help those serving, who have served and their families to navigate life in and beyond military service. Some examples of support are securing funding for special equipment for someone with a disability, adaptions to a property so an older client can remain at home or funds for a rental deposit. Caseworkers also sign-post clients onto specialist local services for advice on benefits, housing, mental health, debt, finding work etc.

There are SSAFA branches throughout the UK and overseas who support local volunteers to deliver services to veterans, serving personnel and their families. Some branches are divided into smaller divisions to ensure the best local service delivery. Each branch has a team of volunteer caseworkers, support volunteers, executive roles, and fundraisers.

Volunteer Caseworkers are the lifeblood of SSAFA, supporting a growing number of people in need of financial, practical, and emotional support. Clients come from all backgrounds and age groups and may have served in WW2 or in a more recent conflict like Iraq or Afghanistan.

When would you be needed and where would you be based?

The essential part of the role is visiting clients, so you will need access to a vehicle or another way to travel to meet clients at home or in a care home setting. As part of your local branch, you might have access to an office, but you can complete the administration part of the role from home as long as you have access to IT equipment and the internet.

What would you be doing?

• Contacting beneficiaries and arranging to meet them at a mutually convenient time.
• Meeting beneficiaries and completing a form to assess their circumstances, using good communication skills, empathy and understanding.
• Sign-posting clients onto local services providing specialist advice.
• Applying for funding on the behalf of the beneficiary through a specific process and system  
• Arranging for the purchase of goods and services
• Keeping the beneficiary informed of their case progress.
• Liaise with the branch and regional office, regarding your availability.
• Keeping up to date with training and SSAFA news so that you are best able to support clients.
• Being a positive ambassador for SSAFA remembering that anyone you meet could be a potential client, volunteer, or fundraiser.
• Volunteering within the standards and values of SSAFA
• Adhering to SSAFAs policies and procedures at all times, including safeguarding, volunteering policy, equality, diversity and inclusion, health and safety, data protection and confidentiality.

• Role specific training to prepare you for your voluntary role – confidentiality and boundaries, personal safety, caseworker training, and caseworker IT system training. The caseworker training takes 3 days and a further half a day for the other training.
• Mandatory on-line training modules to complete at home, so you are up to date on how to keep clients, their families safe and personal information safe.
• Access to a range additional e-learning courses as well as local opportunities for your personal and professional development.
• Local induction including assigning a person from the team who will be your main point of contact.
• Regular opportunities to meet and share best practice with other caseworkers.
• Range of support from central and regional volunteer operations team.
• Reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses
• Volunteers will be covered by SSAFAs Public Liability Insurance whilst carrying out the role.

What are we looking for?

• Friendly and approachable with good listening skills, patience, and a positive attitude.
• Good communication skills both written and verbally.
• Respectful and non-judgemental approach with beneficiaries, their family, other agencies and SSAFA colleagues
• Willingness and ability to use IT systems for initial and on-going training and to enter cases on the Casework Management System. Willingness and ability to send and receive emails – you will receive your own SSAFA email address which you will be required to use when exercising your role.
• Ability to make enquires on behalf of beneficiaries by phone, email, letter or by filling in forms.
• Ability to keep within boundaries of the role with regards to friendship or giving advice
• Reliable, prompt and trustworthy.
• Access to public transport or a car to travel to appointments with clients.

Do you want to gain experience in the charity sector? Would you like to help community groups to find suitable funders and robust evidence to support their funding applications? Do you enjoy doing research and working with data? 

As a Community Southwark Research and Data Volunteer, you will find and read through research which could be useful for charities and groups and summarise the key data. You’ll also play a key role making sure that opportunities on our funding database are up-to-date and accurate. 

What will you do? 

• Research useful reports and data which could be useful for Southwark community groups 

• Read through reports and articles to pick out key statistics 

• Use our data library (on AirTable) to record information about useful data sources 

• Reviewing entries in our funding database (also on AirTable) to check they are correct 

• Uploading new funding opportunities to our funding database 

Person specification:  

• Confident with or happy to learn to use Microsoft Outlook for emails and our internal databases, hosted on Airtable 

• Able to conduct research using search engines on the internet

• Able to read through written reports and articles in English and summarise key information 

• Good attention to detail when working with numbers, facts and spreadsheets 

What you will gain: Increased confidence in working with data, research and databases. An understanding of the community and charity sector in Southwark. Administrative and IT skills. 

We are committed to the ongoing development of our volunteers with skills development, 1-2-1 support, a reference after 3 months and further opportunities to get involved in our work.

Expenses: Community Southwark reimburses travel expenses up to £6 per week and lunch expenses up to £5 when volunteering 4 or more hours in person.

Times and location: This role can be carried out from our office in Bermondsey or from home, and can be a one or two day per week role – flexible to your availability.

• Strategic communications, public or political campaigning, movement building or digital marketing. 

• Fundraising, including individual giving and major donors

We are looking for a Chair-designate for our Board, to work alongside our outgoing Chair for a set period of time, eventually taking-on chairing duties.

As the oldest charity in England (formed in 1451) we’re looking for someone to lead our Board, to work with other trustees and our Charity Manager to continue to shape our strategy and operational delivery, building on almost 600 years of successful support for local  people.

Wokingham United Charities has a mission to relieve poverty and enhance the quality of life of those people in need in our community. We do this by the provision of Almshouse accommodation, by using our funds to help individuals in financial distress, hardship and poverty, and by providing funding to local charity, voluntary and community groups who themselves provide support to residents of Wokingham Borough.

Our usual income per annum is ~£700k, but we’ve been managing funds to help to relieve poverty in the midst of this cost-of-living crisis, and recently our turnover has been ~£1.5m.

About the role

This is a high-profile appointment, with strong commitment to the future of our organisation, and prior experience of charity leadership, both essential qualities.
Experience of committee or similar work, with a focus to lead the stable and forward-looking Board are also part of what we are looking for.

Our Board includes people with understanding of our charity, and we’d obviously expect new trustees to have empathy with our cause and our beneficiaries. Full induction to our organisation will be provided, plus specialist support you may need, including access to external training.

If you can think collectively and strategically to lead us to plan long-term, you have the primary skills needed; you’ll also help guide other trustees. Support from our paid employees is always available, as they will be dealing with the day-to-day running of the organisation.

We are a charity not a business, but we apply business principles to governing our organisation. We want to expand our Board’s diversity, in all its meanings, and strongly welcome applications from people from less-represented groups. 

The Board currently meets every two months in Wokingham, with online/hybrid attendance from some people. It would be expected that our Chair attends face-to-face for the majority of meetings.

Would you like to do something practical to help older people? Do you have a few hours a month to spare? We are looking for caring and compassionate people with excellent communication and administrative skills to assist us with reception duties at our footcare clinics.

Your volunteering responsibilities

• Help prepare the venue before and after clinics.

• Act as first port of call for clients attending the clinic, e.g., direct them where to park, welcome them on arrival, provide drinks and chat while they wait for their appointment, and inform the Foot Care Practitioners when they have arrived.

• Ensure that clients are informed of fire safety procedures e.g. signing in and out, evacuation procedures.

• Alert the Independence at Home Manager if there are any issues or concerns.
