Job description

Community Engagement Volunteer – Support your local Armed Forces community, one conversation at a time

Location: Anywhere in Warwickshire, Coventry and surrounding areas

Hours: Flexible – volunteering can fit around your existing commitments

Role Type: Volunteer

Travel: Access to public transport or a car for attending local events

IT requirements: Basic IT skills would be helpful for communication and activity administration

Are you passionate about making a difference in your community? Do you enjoy meeting new people, organising events or spreading the word about a cause that matters? As a Community Engagement Volunteer, you can help SSAFA raise awareness, build local connections and support serving personnel, veterans and their families. No military background is needed, just your time, enthusiasm and willingness to get involved.

About the role

Community Engagement Volunteers work with fellow branch members to create activities that spread the word about SSAFA. You will help ensure the Armed Forces community knows that support is available and encourage the public support that enables SSAFA to continue offering its services.

This is a varied and flexible role. You can focus on the activities that best match your skills, interests and availability, whether that is meeting people, organising events, giving talks, fundraising, building local relationships or providing practical administration.

You may:

• Be the friendly face of SSAFA at local events and community spaces, talking with visitors and helping promote our work

• Help organise or support activities such as charity dinners, carol concerts, local fairs and awareness events

• Provide a welcoming SSAFA presence at veterans’ breakfast clubs, cafés or hubs, sharing service information and signposting where appropriate

• Deliver engaging talks to organisations and community groups about SSAFA’s history, mission and services

• Work with the Community Engagement Manager to build local networks and respond to community opportunities

• Build positive relationships with local groups, organisations, supporters and businesses

• Support fundraising by engaging local businesses, helping with events or developing creative fundraising ideas

• Assist with branch and event administration, schedules and calendars so activities run smoothly

• Help ensure no member of the Armed Forces community feels forgotten

What we’re looking for

You do not need previous charity, volunteering or military experience. You will be a good fit if you are:

• Friendly, approachable and comfortable meeting new people

• Confident engaging face-to-face with members of the public, potential beneficiaries, volunteers and SSAFA colleagues

• Enthusiastic about raising awareness and building community connections

• Reliable and willing to stay in touch with your branch and/or Community Engagement Manager about your availability

• Happy to contribute independently and as part of a friendly, inclusive team

• Willing to follow SSAFA guidance and represent the charity positively

• Comfortable with basic IT, or willing to develop these skills

What you’ll gain

• A flexible and rewarding role that can work around your other commitments

• The opportunity to use your skills, knowledge and life experience to benefit others

• Training, support and resources from your local SSAFA branch and Community Engagement Manager

• New experience and transferable skills that you can highlight on your CV and in job interviews

• The opportunity to meet people and be part of a welcoming, inclusive volunteer team

• The satisfaction of giving practical support to your local branch and helping the Armed Forces community

Why volunteer with SSAFA?

SSAFA believes that no one who has served our country should ever battle alone. Our values of Commitment, Compassion, Integrity and Understanding are at the heart of everything we do, and we ask our volunteers to uphold these values alongside our BRAVE standards.

Every conversation, community connection and local activity can help someone discover the support they need or inspire others to help SSAFA continue its work.

Ready to make a difference? Apply today and help ensure that members of the Armed Forces community know SSAFA is here for them.

SSAFA is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all those involved in our work and expects volunteers to share this commitment.
