Job description

VOLUNTEER HEAD OF SERVICES, PROGRAMMES & IMPACT

Join SUNSHINE — Bringing Connection, Joy, Community Spirit and SUNSHINE to Every Neighbourhood

WHO WE ARE

SUNSHINE is a start‑up loneliness charity at the very beginning of its journey — a modern, volunteer‑powered movement bringing people together through simple, meaningful activities that spark connection, build confidence, and spread joy.

Our work reflects the diversity of London — its cultures, communities, and neighbourhoods.

We don’t rely on a building or a centre. We go where people already are — parks, libraries, cafés, community halls, online spaces, neighbourhood corners. Wherever people gather, we show up with warmth, welcome, and community spirit.

Loneliness affects people of all ages and backgrounds, often silently.

We’re building a future where every neighbourhood feels connected, supported, and full of opportunities for people to grow, contribute, and belong. If you believe in people, community, and the power of small moments to create big impact, you’ll feel right at home here.

WHAT WE DO

SUNSHINE will be delivering free and low‑cost community‑led activities that help people connect, learn, and thrive, including:

  • Social groups and pop‑up events.

  • Health and wellbeing sessions.

  • Skills workshops (digital, creative, financial, employment readiness).

  • Family‑friendly activities.

  • Neighbourhood outreach in underserved areas.

  • Volunteer‑led community projects.

Everything we do is shaped by local voices and powered by volunteers — bringing connection, joy, and community spirit to the places people already love.

OUR APPROACH

  • Local — We go where people already are.

  • Inclusive — Everyone is welcome.

  • Flexible — We adapt to community needs.

  • Volunteer‑Powered — People make this possible.

THE ROLE — VOLUNTEER HEAD OF SERVICES, PROGRAMMES & IMPACT

We’re looking for a Volunteer Head of Services, Programmes & Impact to help shape, grow, and strengthen the heart of SUNSHINE’s work — the activities, services, and community experiences that bring people together and reduce loneliness.

This is a strategic and hands‑on leadership role for someone who loves designing meaningful programmes, supporting volunteers, and ensuring our work genuinely improves people’s lives.

You’ll help build the systems, quality standards, and impact approach that will guide SUNSHINE as we grow across neighbourhoods.

As our Volunteer Head of Services, Programmes & Impact, you will:

1. Lead Service & Programme Development

  • Shape the design of SUNSHINE’s activities, groups, and community‑led programmes.

  • Ensure our services are safe, inclusive, accessible, and rooted in local needs.

  • Support volunteers to deliver high‑quality, welcoming, community‑spirited activities.

2. Champion Quality & Safeguarding

  • Embed good practice across all services.

  • Ensure safeguarding, risk management, and accessibility are central to everything we do.

  • Help create simple, clear guidance for volunteers delivering activities.

3. Drive Impact & Learning

  • Develop a light‑touch, human‑centred approach to measuring impact.

  • Help us understand what’s working, what’s changing, and what communities need next.

  • Use insights to shape future programmes and strengthen our movement.

4. Support Volunteer Teams

  • Work closely with volunteer leads to ensure they feel confident and supported.

  • Help build a culture of learning, reflection, and continuous improvement.

  • Celebrate successes and help volunteers feel proud of the difference they make.

5. Work with Leadership

  • Collaborate with the Founder/CEO and other volunteer leads to shape strategy.

  • Help ensure our services grow sustainably across multiple neighbourhoods.

  • Champion our values and embed them in every programme and decision.

This role is perfect for someone who:

  • Loves community, connection, and people‑powered change.

  • Enjoys designing meaningful programmes that make a real difference.

  • Has experience in community work, service design, programme management, or impact — or is excited to grow into it.

  • Thrives in start‑up environments where you can build things from scratch.

  • Values inclusion, kindness, and making things simple and accessible.

  • Wants to help reduce loneliness and strengthen neighbourhoods.

  • Believes in volunteer‑powered movements and grassroots impact.

Time commitment is flexible and can fit around your life. We welcome people from all backgrounds and experiences — especially those with lived experience of loneliness or the communities we serve.

WHY IT MATTERS

Loneliness is one of the biggest challenges facing our communities today. Too many people feel disconnected, unseen, or without a place to belong.

SUNSHINE exists to change that.

By joining us as our Volunteer Head of Services, Programmes & Impact, you’ll help shape the activities and experiences that bring people together, build confidence, and create moments of joy and belonging.

Your leadership will directly influence the quality, reach, and impact of our work — helping SUNSHINE grow into a trusted, community‑powered movement that brings warmth and connection to every neighbourhood.

Together, we can bring SUNSHINE to every corner of our communities.
