About Bookmark
Bookmark exists to change children’s life stories through the joy of reading. We partner with schools to develop whole school reading cultures and to provide one-to-one reading support.
For the children who need us, we’re changing their story.
About the role
Each year, one in four children leave primary school unable to read well and disadvantaged children are disproportionately affected. Struggling to read can contribute to poor educational attainment, lower literacy in adulthood and has even been linked to a lower life expectancy.
Bookmark volunteers spend one hour a week reading stories and playing games with a child aged between five and ten years old, on our secure online platform. The programme involves two 30-minute sessions a week with the same child, for six weeks. You book your programme through the Bookmark Volunteer Hub and select sessions at times that work with your schedule.
“It was such a wonderful experience. I was very happy knowing that I was helping someone. The child really improved a lot during the 6 weeks. It was really rewarding for me to see the improvement.” — Joe, Bookmark volunteer
Why volunteer with Bookmark?
New government data shows that attainment fell further for poorer pupils this year which has widened the attainment to the largest it has been in 10 years.
As a Bookmark volunteer, you’ll help to bridge this gap. You’ll:
- Help children who struggle with their reading gain essential skills at a crucial age. This will prepare them to move up the school, ready to tackle new challenges without falling further behind. Three quarters of our volunteers noticed their reader become more confident with their reading.
- Make learning to read fun by bringing your own personality into the sessions and getting to know your reader’s interests. It’s amazing when you introduce a book, comic or poem for the first time that they love! 90% of teachers said that pupils enjoy reading more after our programme.
- Give a child one-to-one attention and be a role model. Teachers have told us that children really benefit from this dedicated time and found it boosted their self-esteem and confidence as well as their reading. You can read more about this in our Impact Report.
Helping a child with their reading is also really fun and rewarding. Over 60% of our volunteers said their own wellbeing had improved because of volunteering with Bookmark.
Is volunteering with Bookmark right for me?
Our volunteers are all ages and from all walks of life. At Bookmark we aim to make volunteering accessible to as many people as possible, so we can help more children.
- Are you over 18 and currently living in the UK?
- Are you passionate about literacy and its importance?
- Are you able to show enthusiasm, encouragement, empathy and patience?
- Can you commit to two 30-minute sessions a week, for six consecutive weeks?
- Are you willing to complete at least 3 six-week programmes a year?
- Can you provide two references for your application (for safeguarding reasons)?
- Do you have access to a PC, laptop or Chromebook with a webcam and internet connection (iPads, phones and/or tablets are not compatible), and do you feel relatively comfortable using technology?
- If NO, then you can still apply to be to volunteer on our face-to-face programmes in certain locations.
Main duties and objectives
- Help children who struggle with their reading gain essential skills at a crucial age. This will prepare them to move up the school, ready to tackle new challenges without falling further behind. Three quarters of our volunteers noticed their reader become more confident with their reading.

About Onja
Onja is a social enterprise training underprivileged youth into world-class software developers.
We find the brightest students in Madagascar who can’t afford to continue their education, and train them in English language and software development. After just two-and-a-half years they are ready to work as remote front-end software developers in international tech teams.
Once in a job, our developers earn a good salary that helps them support their families and pay forward the opportunity to a new wave of students. They unlock exciting careers that fulfil their potential, and accelerate the development of their nation (see ‘How Onja Works’ below).
Our first cohort, ‘Wave 1’, consists of nineteen talented and committed graduates who are now working remotely for our partner companies in Europe and the US. With this immensely successful first cohort, and a proven social model, our goal is now to scale our impact: we aim to take on 360 new students over the next four years.
About the Role
In 2019, we developed and delivered a full-time course that allowed twenty students to progress from absolute beginners to upper intermediate speakers (B2 level) in just one year, with some students even reaching an advanced (C1) level. Our first cohort contained 19 developers and we plan to train hundreds of students in the coming years. Our challenge now is to scale our organisation, bringing opportunities to hundreds, moving to thousands of students. Your mission as our English Course Designer is to rebuild this course, from the ground up, into a highly scalable online-style programme.
Your responsibilities include:
- Creating engaging video lectures, learning activities and course content to build on an existing course.
- Create supporting material/media (audio, video, simulations, role plays, games etc)
- Collaborate with existing Onja teachers, incorporating their specific experience into your course design.
- Applying tested instructional design theories, practice and methods
- Decide on the criteria used to assess learners’ performance and develop assessment instruments.
- Maintain project documentation and course folders.
This is a pivotal role for Onja at this exciting time. We are poised to grow fast and our dream is to train thousands of new students each year. You will be setting the foundations not just for this first cohort but the waves of youth that will follow in future years.
Requirements
- A twelve-month commitment is preferred.
- Instructional design experience as well as teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) experience is preferred however a willingness to learn and grow in the role is most important to us.
What you can expect
- You’ll join our tight-knit, committed team in Toamasina, Madagascar.
- We know it’s a big move so we will look after you and make sure you are secure and settled.
- We’ll provide secure, comfortable, beachfront accommodation and food.
- We are able to offer a good local salary – enough to live comfortably and have plenty left over for holidays travels.
- Unlimited annual leave. We recommend between 30 and 35 days as a guide to give you time to explore the wonders of Madagascar
- We also offer 25% remote work, for when you are keen to get some city vibes in Madagascar.
- We’ll provide optional weekly Malagasy lessons to bring you up to speed with the language.
- Your visa will be sponsored.
- Sponsored flights.
Start date
We are ready for you now, but generally allow for two months from the time the contract is signed.
How Onja Works
Onja is a social enterprise with a sustainable model:
- Search for brilliant minds who would otherwise be limited to low-paid, unfulfilling careers.
- Students receive two years of English and software development instruction.
- Graduates earn (and continue learning) at our outsourcing enterprise.
- All profits are used to train the next wave of students and the cycle begins again.
The client requests no contact from agencies or media sales.

- a personalised reference
- access to a career mentor and seminars
- lifetime access to our Team Up community
This is an opportunity to expand improve your employability and expand your network - all whilst tutoring young people from low-income backgrounds!
Our tutors say:
'The resources offered by Team Up are exceptional; they always allow me to plan my lessons successfully and get the most out of each class.'
'My favourite part was when I could see my pupils enjoying themselves as I think that is the most important role of a tutor - to encourage pupils to enjoy learning. It is very rewarding when your pupils finally understand a concept they have been struggling with.'
Summary of responsibilities:
-
Deliver weekly 60-90 minute tuition sessions in a local school
-
Suggested 30 mins for lesson planning each week

Ongoing coaching, training and support from an experienced teacher who will be assigned to support you over the course of the programme

Sessions will take place on a fixed day of the week, normally at the end of the school day (between 3-5pm) or on a Saturday morning
-
Each programme runs for a school term - Summer (May to Jul), Autumn (Sep to Dec) and Spring (Jan to Apr). You will be expected to volunteer for at least ten weeks (one school term)
-
This role requires you to undergo a free of charge DBS check which will be arranged by Team Up
-
All our programmes are delivered in person
-
Reasonable travel expenses are covered
What our pupils say:
"My favourite part of Team Up is that it doesn’t feel as stressful as it does in a classroom. If you get something wrong in the classroom you have 30 people looking at you, but here you just have 2 people and so it doesn't matter if you get it wrong."
"Team Up is very encouraging - it builds your confidence in tests and it helps you to learn more words to use in your writing. Team Up is actually really cool."
'I felt nervous before starting Team Up because I get nervous when I meet new people ... Now I feel a lot more confident coming to the sessions, and it wasn’t at all as scary as I thought it would be! ... It also helps me to feel more confident to put my hand up in class, and I get less nervous when my teacher sets us challenging bits of work, or picks on people at random in the class, because I know I can answer maths questions better now.'
