Cancer Support Scotland exists to improve the wellbeing of those affected by cancer, whether they are a person with cancer, a carer or loved one. Our wellbeing services range from professional one-to-one and digital counselling to stress management and self help tools. In the last year we’ve offered over 6,500 appointments and demand for our services is continuing to rise. The Generation Trust, based at Guy’s Hospital in London, seeks new charity trustees to support its mission of advancing scientific research and translating discoveries into clinical practice.
The Generation Trust was created in 1982 with the aim of raising funds to invest in genetic research, with a particular focus on the work of expert scientists in the Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics at Guy’s Hospital, London. Initially the charity raised about £2m and it currently has reserves of £700k. The charity has provided early support for a number of projects leading to better understanding of a number of disabling and life changing conditions.
The science of genetics continues to make exciting and rapid advances in the knowledge of human disease, helping to inform diagnostic practice and to develop new treatments.
The Department at Guy’s has played a key role in helping to move scientific knowledge ‘from bench to bedside’ in the NHS, advancing new methods of preventing or treating a range of life-changing and disabling conditions in both children and adults.
Modern DNA sequencing techniques at Guy’s have advanced understanding of the molecular origins and characteristics of breast cancer, leukaemia, inflammatory bowel disease, psoriasis and Huntingdon’s Disease as well as some of the rarer genetic diseases in children.
Funds raised by The Generation Trust have been used to invest in the early careers of the Department’s brightest young scientists, in PhD students or post-doctoral fellows, in pilot studies to ‘prime the pump’ for successful major grant applications and occasionally in capital projects to enhance the facilities of this world class research centre.
At the end of 2023, the Trust had reserves of about £700,000. The founders of The Generation Trust now hope to find the next generation of charity trustees to succeed them. We aim to recruit a small group who between them will have an interest in or, at least, a curiosity about the development of health science, cell biology, bio-informatics, DNA sequencing and genome analysis.
To sustain and grow the Trust we would like to add some expertise in investment management, charity governance and, ideally, access to wider networks of potential financial support in the City of London and elsewhere.

CMTUK supports people living with the group of neurological conditions known as Charcot Marie Tooth Disease (CMT). The board is seeking members to enhance the board and is keen on increasing its diversity.
Who we are
CMTUK supports people living with Charcot Marie Tooth Disease and related conditions. It is a small charity with four part time members of staff, based in Christchurch, Dorset. Trustees are from across the UK.
The role
The CMTUK board meets 5 times a year, these are mostly online with at least one of these meetings in person, usually the evening before the annual conference (This has been during April/May in West Midlands). About us
Lipodystrophy UK is a dedicated charity, set up to support people affected by Lipodystrophy. Lipodystrophy is a rare disease which affects the body’s ability to store fat under the skin. This can lead to metabolic complications including insulin resistance, diabetes, dyslipidaemia, heart disease, kidney disease, fatty liver disease and many others.
We are a small but growing charity and need help with our Trustee board, after some dedicated long-serving members have stepped down.
We’re looking for a socially-conscious individual to help support our goals. This will be a fantastic opportunity to gain experience as a Board member and Trustee, facilitating the growth of the charity in its continuous efforts to support patients and their families. We welcome anyone affected by Lipodystrophy, rare disease, or anyone who wants to help our vibrant community.
Your role
You’ll be required to:
- Attend quarterly Board meetings (virtually)
- Offer opinions and recommendations on charity projects and directions
- Support our actions through organisation of/support organisation of different projects, for example:
- Arranging the printing of information leaflets
- Being a point of contact to a collaborator/collaborating organisation
- Organising a patient support day, etc.
- Liaise with and advise fellow trustees and other volunteers regarding assigned projects/tasks, keeping the Board up-to-date with any related developments
- Maintain a flexible approach in line with community engagement
- Give regular updates (quarterly Board meetings and ad hoc, when required) to the other Trustees on the Board

- Ensure proper records are kept and that effective financial procedures and controls are in place
- Monitor and report on the financial health of the organisation
- Liaise with and advise fellow trustees and other volunteers on all financial matters to ensure the financial viability of the organisation
- Make fellow trustees aware of their financial obligations and take a lead in interpreting financial data to them
- Produce or assist with the production of all necessary financial reports and returns, accounts and audits
- Regularly report the financial position at trustee meetings
- Appraise the financial viability of plans, funding applications, proposals and feasibility studies and advise the trustees accordingly
- Ensure that funds are properly expended in accordance with any restrictions placed by the donor
About you
You’ll be comfortable communicating with others, discussing the merits and disadvantages for different approaches. You will be comfortable suggesting ideas to support patients and willing to take on responsibility for different projects, as required (expect no more than a few hours commitment a month). It would be great if you had an understanding and/or a personal connection to Lipodystrophy and/or rare disease, or a willingness to learn about Lipodystrophy and its challenges. You must be sensitive to the difficulties experienced by the lipodystrophy community. To be considered for a Trustee role you will have:

● Experience: A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in finance, accounting, or a related field, with a strong understanding of charity finance and governance.
● Qualifications: Recognised accounting qualification (e.g., ACA, ACCA, CIMA) is highly desirable.
