Check my CVThe Alec Dickson Trust is a grant making charity looking to recruit up to five volunteers to join its Board of young Trustees. The Trust supports young people who, through volunteering or community service, aim to enhance the lives of others, particularly those most marginalised by society.
About the Alec Dickson Trust
Alec Dickson together with his wife Moira, founded Voluntary Service overseas (VSO) and later Community Service Volunteer (CSV) as they passionately believed that anyone – whatever their background – could make a positive contribution to the world around them. Alec pioneered the involvement of young volunteers with backgrounds in offending, drug misuse and homelessness, built up a programme of community service work in schools, and campaigned vigorously for a nationwide community service. It was with this spirit of adventure and belief in young people that the Alec Dickson Trust was established after Alec’s death in 1994. Since then, the Trust has remained in the hands of young people all of whom are under the age of 30 to continue his legacy by awarding grants to young people with innovative community projects promoting volunteering up to the value of £500.
As a Trustee of the Alec Dickson Trust, your role is to review and discuss exciting applications from young people dedicated to making changes in their community - this happens four times a year at quarterly board meetings (January, April, July and October). All applications are marked on a grading system looking at innovation, impact and how they promote youth volunteering. During 2020, we provided almost £15,000 in funding to over twenty projects around the UK, including many projects that directly supported those most affected by Covid-19.
Trustees are also expected to develop the Trust by sharing new and innovative ideas to improve the grant-making process so we can continue to make a real and positive difference and demonstrate impact. This presents a great opportunity to learn new skills or strengthen existing ones.
Joining the Alec Dickson Trust
We are looking to recruit 3-5 trustees with a diverse set of skills and experiences. It’s an exciting time to join the Alec Dickson Trust, as we are entering into the first year of our new five-year strategy and are exploring new ways of funding volunteering projects.
We welcome applications from disadvantaged/underrepresented groups and backgrounds outside of the charity sector. We are particularly interested to hear from applicants with skills in fundraising/income generation, legal, marketing/PR, evaluation, HR and digital.
There will be some flexibility in the exact nature of each trustee role, but we currently expect vacancies on the following committees: Fundraising, Evaluation, Strategy, and Communications – please let us know in your application if you want to apply for a specific role.
If this sounds like the role for you, we would be delighted to hear from you and look forward to being in touch soon.
