Job description

Could you be a trustee of the Brontë Society?

In readiness for our anticipated AGM later this year, The Brontë Society is seeking applications from people interested in joining the Board of Trustees.

The Brontë Society is a registered charity (charity number 529952) and a company limited by guarantee.  It is responsible for the accredited Brontë Parsonage Museum in Haworth and is dedicated to promoting the Brontës’ literary legacy within contemporary society.

It is a pivotal time to be a trustee and board member as the Brontë Society emerges from the challenges of the pandemic and looks to the future as a resilient, inclusive and modern charity.  We are proud to be one of Arts Council England’s National Portfolio Organisations for literature and are entering a period of development as we refine our strategic plans and key objectives in readiness to apply for the next four-year cycle of funding which will commence in April 2023.

The board of any charity should comprise a diverse range of individuals who collectively bring different expertise, skills and lived experience to form a whole and balanced team.  At the current time, we are keen to hear from people who have expertise in the following areas:

  • Accountancy and finance (to be our Board Finance Lead and Chair of our Finance and Audit committee)
  • Business and e-commerce
  • Legal and HR
  • Digital development

We are committed to becoming a more diverse and inclusive charity and particularly welcome enquiries and applications from those currently under-represented in our organisation including those from Black, Asian and ethnically diverse backgrounds, LGBT+ people, D/deaf people, disabled people and people aged 16 – 30.

As the majority of board and committee meetings take place online, we also welcome enquiries from people who might only be able to join our meetings remotely. We expect anyone standing as a trustee to demonstrate a commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusivity.

The Brontë Society is proud to be a membership organisation and, while our Articles of Association have some provision for us to co-opt people to the Board, the majority of our trustees are elected by the membership at the AGM.  In accordance with our Articles of Association, candidates standing for election need to be members of the Brontë Society at the point of nomination and proposed and seconded by two other members.  We would be happy to explain this process in more detail as part of your application.
