We're a young and developing volunteer-led heritage charity with lots of aspirations. We're seeking trustees to increase the range of skills and experiences we have on our board of enthusiastic trustees.
Set in rolling countryside, Halstead is a community-spirited town, with a history that is reflected in the townscape. Yet these natural and built assets are not as well-known as they deserve to be, and some are at risk. Halstead 21st Century Group promotes, preserves and educates about the heritage in Halstead, Essex and surrounding areas for the public benefit.
What will you be doing?
We're looking for people who want to make a difference by contributing their skills and enthusiasm to our existing trustee talent pool: helping us to turn our aspirations into reality.
We neither own nor manage assets yet (but that's something we aspire to) so there is no office base. Your duties can therefore be carried out remotely via a virtual meeting platform. Trustee meetings are currently held monthly, but as an evolving organisation our practices could change.
You’ll work with five co-trustees to:
- Determine the strategic direction of the Group and make key decisions about new projects, funding applications and recruitment etc.
- Ensure that the Group carries out its purposes for the public benefit
- Make sure that the Group complies with the law and our governing document and acts with due diligence.
- Manage all the Group's resources in the most productive way possible
What are we looking for?
All of these would be lovely to have, but any of them would be highly desirable
- experience in the heritage or conservation sector
- communication/marketing skills
- Financial, including fundraising and bid-writing some legal knowledge
- experience in strategic or business planning
What's in it for the volunteer?
- See your own contribution to the organisation through outcomes
- Be intellectually stimulated
- know you are a valued member of an active, results-driven organisation
- benefit from training opportunities
- increase your understanding of the heritage and/or charity sector
Time commitment
Trustees' meetings usually take place one evening a month from 7.30 - 9.00pm. Other input will be at your convenience.

Parentkind is a charity (turnover c.£1.5m) which represents over 12,500 Parent Teacher Associations across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. These PTAs are supported to raise a staggering £122 million per year for their schools (£80 million during Covid) and the charity has huge ambitions to grow the number of PTAs across the UK and support them to collectively raise a quarter of a billion to directly impact the young people in their schools.
The charity is the representative voice of parents, guardians and carers with educational responsibility and has been a go-to source for government and other key educational stakeholders, including during the Covid-19 pandemic where we collated and represented parents’ views on diverse topics such as mask-wearing in school and pupils sitting exams.
We champion the role of those with parental responsibility in their child’s education through our research and by influencing senior education policymakers and legislators such as MPs, education unions and government officials. The Covid-19 pandemic has had a measurable impact on our children and young people and their education. It has also changed the relationships between schools and homes. Moving forward, Parentkind is uniquely positioned to represent the voice of parents and carers at local, national and government level.
While the turnover of the charity is lean at the centre, the impact of the charity is significantly large, and our work ensures parent and carer voices are heard at a local, regional, and national level. The evidence is clear that parental participation in education benefits children in schools and society as a whole and increases the opportunities for social mobility for our younger generations.
The Trustees and the Parentkind team have collaborated to create a new strategy with a focus on our four strategic pillars – Growth, Inclusivity, Credibility and Collaboration.
Parentkind currently supports 12,500 PTAs in schools. Our ambition is to increase this number significantly and to work in partnership to ensure parental participation is fully diverse and inclusive. We will actively ensure that schools in under-represented communities are part of our membership and have access to third-party funding. We want to ensure we are active across all geographical areas in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and that our support and communications are inclusive and resonate with all who have parental responsibility.
During the last two years, we have been more active than ever in the media and have built a reputation as a credible voice within the Department for Education and equivalents across the nation.
We now want to build on this to be a thought leader; gathering compelling research and ensuring we spread our message of parental participation and its benefits.
We will also continue to empower PTAs to promote their positive outcomes and inspire parents and educators locally and nationally.
As we enter an exciting phase of Parentkind’s history, we are looking to appoint a new Treasurer to chair our Money & Risk sub-committee and two new Trustees to come on board.
In particular:
For the Treasurer, we are looking for a financially qualified professional with an understanding of the charity sector.
For our new Trustees, given we are looking to grow our membership we are keen to have a membership professional who has experience in growing, retaining, engaging, and motivating membership.
In line with our new strategy, we are looking for one of our new Trustees to bring experience in policy influencing and public relations to help us ensure the voice of those with a parenting role is heard.
We provide training and support and encourage first-time Trustees to apply. We value inclusivity and actively encourage people from all backgrounds and cultures to apply.
We have four main board meetings a year held in central London, and three sub-committees (People & Governance, Impact and Money & Risk), Trustees are expected to serve on one subcommittee. We have an annual strategy away day once a year. Currently, we are moving toward having our sub-committees take place on the same day as the board meetings.

The Change Project was established in 2017 to change harmful relationships to create positive futures for children, victims, and perpetrators.
1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men experience domestic abuse every year. This equates to two million people in the UK – these are only the figures that are reported to health and the police and do not estimate the abuse behind closed doors.
It is estimated that 130,000 children live in abusive homes.
The Change Project was created to support people to achieve a life free of abuse. We aim to achieve this through increasing the safety of victims, changing the behaviour of perpetrators, reducing the impact of domestic violence for future generations, and educating professionals and the public about domestic abuse.
The Change Project’s services include:
- Domestic Violence Perpetrator Programme: a RESPECT accredited, 27-week structured group programme, designed to engage perpetrators and work with them to understand their behaviour.
- The Change Hub: addresses domestic abuse in the community. Domestic Violence Awareness Practitioners deliver one-to-one behaviour change interventions matched to the level of risk and the client’s individual circumstances.
- Centre Counselling: provides counselling to families, couples, and individuals to promote wellbeing through healthy relationships. We address sexual problems through counselling and psychosexual therapy covering all aspects of relationships.
The Change Project’s influence in the field of domestic abuse has continued to grow, but our work is not done. There are more than 100,000 people in the UK at imminent risk of serious injury. Services rightly need to focus on meeting the needs of victims, but this means only 1% of perpetrators get specialist intervention that might help prevent future abusive behaviour.
We are now looking to grow our board through the appointment of a new Chair and two trustees.
The Covid-19 pandemic has been challenging, creating a “perfect storm” for an increase in domestic abuse related incidents, and thus more people needing our services.
Regrettably, unable to continue many services during the pandemic lockdown, the charity experienced a decline in income and the size of our organisation was downsized.
As we continue to rebuild with a desire to scale, grow, and have a greater impact, we are looking for a new Chair and trustees who can support us to create our next strategy. The focus will be on growing our organisation, responding to national need, expanding our services, establishing our brand, and extending our reputation for quality.
To achieve this, we are looking for a Chair who can lead us in our next strategic phase, bring strong understanding of charity governance and a commercial lens to our organisation.
For our new trustees, we are interested in people who bring a wealth of experiences including, but not limited to, a domestic abuse specialist, commissioning and contracting, safeguarding, legal and HR. We are looking for a highly committed and a more diverse board who can support us to achieve growth and impact while also diversify our income.
The board meets quarterly in the evening for 1.5 hours. Currently, the board meets virtually but would like to have a mix of face to face and virtual in the future. The expected time commitment for the Chair is 1-2 days per month, while for trustees this is expected to be half a day a month.
Closing date: 9 a.m. Monday 6th June 2022

The National Autistic Society is the UK’s leading charity for autistic people and one of the country’s major charities, with a turnover of around £95 million. Since 1962, we’ve been transforming lives, changing attitudes and helping to create a society that works for autistic adults and children.
Our head office is in London, and we have national offices in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales and a network of regional offices and volunteer-run branches across the UK. As well as adult services and schools, we run a range of programmes, have dedicated diagnostic services and run specialist helplines. We also work closely with businesses, local authorities and government to help them provide more autism-friendly spaces, deliver better services and improve laws. And we improve public understanding of autism and the difficulties many autistic people face.
Over the last two years, we have achieved much to be proud of – as well as continuing to provide support and guidance to tens of thousands of autistic people and their families through the Covid-19 crisis. We opened a new school and services across the UK, we developed our existing services and launched them online, to continue to support people who’d otherwise have been isolated during the pandemic. We had important policy wins, including on getting more autistic people access to vital blue badges and seeing the first NHS autism diagnosis data published. We have continued to invest in our digital transformation with a new website and new digital care management tool and last year we appointed a new Chair to lead our Board, Dr Steve Ladyman.
We’re continuing to advocate on longstanding issues such as social care funding, and campaign for what autistic people need to see in the forthcoming autism strategy in England and its equivalent in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. We’re also growing our branch network – including national online branches – and we’ve begun work on a new mental health programme combining research, digital guidance and policy influencing.
This is a truly transformational and vital time to be part of our charity as we look to create a new organisational strategy with our new Chair.
Looking to the future, we’ll be developing a new strategy as we head towards our charity’s 60th anniversary later this year.
We’re proud of what we’ve achieved – but there’s always more to be done. As the economic, social, and political landscape changes, our strategy must evolve to reflect changes. We need to ensure we continue to increase our fundraising and commercial activities to deliver the scale of impact required.
We’re looking for a new trustee to join our board to help us navigate the future challenges and in particular we are looking for this individual to play a role on the board as a trustee with safeguarding expertise. With this in mind we are looking for people who have an expertise and understanding of safeguarding responsibilities in multi-faceted organisations, this could be in adult or children’s social care, education, health or the charity and/or private sectors.
We’re keen to ensure our board is diverse in every way and we’re committed to ensuring our Trustees reflect our society, our charity and the people we represent and support. We welcome applications from autistic people, their families and carers. To achieve greater diversity, we’re actively encouraging applications from people of all backgrounds and regions.
We’re looking for people who can provide strategic direction, appropriate oversight, scrutiny, challenge, leadership and passion to support our development.
The National Autistic Society Board meets four times with one overnight strategy away day every year. We expect our Trustees to join one sub-committee which also meets four times a year. All our meetings are currently virtual, and, in the future, we expect that we’ll have a blended mix of face-to-face and virtual meetings. We expect the time commitment overall to be one to two days per month.
