Job description

Education for Health is a charity that aims to improve the lives of people with long term physical and mental health conditions by providing high quality education to health care professionals and others who support them.

We are seeking two new Trustees to join our Board and would welcome Trustees with a background in business growth, development and expansion. A background or interest in healthcare and/or education would be an advantage as would experience in the context of health, well-being and medical products. 

The Board meet four times a year and this Trustee would also be a member of the Commercial Committee which meets four times per year. Meetings are a mixture of in person and on line. The role is voluntary but we pay travel expenses.

Trustees are responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of Education for Health and for developing the organisation’s aims, objectives and goals, whist operating within financial, legal and regulatory guidelines.

We will be looking to appoint a new Chair from November 2026 and therefore welcome applications from experienced Trustees who may have an interest in applying for the Chair role next year. 

Core Responsibilities:

To ensure that the charity functions within its legal and regulatory requirements and in line with the organisations’ governance, continually striving for best practice.

To undertake such duties in a professional manner acting with integrity.

Use reasonable care and skill in their work as trustees, using their personal skills and experience to ensure that the charity is well-run and efficient.

To act in the best interest of the charity and its beneficiaries at all times.

To promote and develop the charity for it to grow and maintain its contribution to health and well being.

To maintain sound financial management of the charity’s resources, ensuring expenditure is in line with the organisations’ objects, and investment activities meet accepted standards and policies.

To interview, appoint and monitor the work and activities of the CEO and executive team, according to the Scheme of Delegation.

To ensure the effective and efficient administration of the charity and its resources, including, where appropriate, acting as a counter-signatory on bank payments and any applications for funds.

To maintain absolute confidentiality about all sensitive/confidential information received in the course of trustee’s responsibilities to the charity.

Business growth and income generation:

To support the executive with the development of a commercial and growth strategy

To support the executive with business growth and expansion

To oversee and support new product development and the identification of new markets and support the commercialisation of all our educational packages

To oversee and support the executive in achieving income targets set by the Board

To develop the organisations approach to securing grants and bursary opportunities

 

 

Accountability

As the board are responsible and liable for the governance and functioning of the charity, they are accountable in varying degrees to a variety of stakeholders including learners, commissioners, University of Hertfordshire (our awarding body), the Charity Commission, and Companies House.

 

Requirements:

To attend Board meetings approximately four times per year and to read papers in advance of meetings.

To attend the Commercial Committee four times per year.

To attend the AGM (usually adjacent to a Board meeting).

Person specification for a trustee:

Each trustee must demonstrate:

A commitment to the organisation and its objectives.

An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship.

A willingness to devote the necessary time and effort to their duties as a trustee.

Strategic vision.

Sound, independent judgment.

An ability to think creatively.

A willingness to share their view.

An ability to work effectively as a member of a team and achieve consensus
