About Bookmark
Bookmark exists to change children’s life stories through the joy of reading. We partner with schools to develop whole school reading cultures and to provide one-to-one reading support.
For the children who need us, we’re changing their story.
About the role
Each year, one in four children leave primary school unable to read well and disadvantaged children are disproportionately affected. Struggling to read can contribute to poor educational attainment, lower literacy in adulthood and has even been linked to a lower life expectancy.
Bookmark volunteers spend one hour a week reading stories and playing games with a child aged between five and ten years old, on our secure online platform. The programme involves two 30-minute sessions a week with the same child, for six weeks. You book your programme through the Bookmark Volunteer Hub and select sessions at times that work with your schedule.
“It was such a wonderful experience. I was very happy knowing that I was helping someone. The child really improved a lot during the 6 weeks. It was really rewarding for me to see the improvement.” — Joe, Bookmark volunteer
Why volunteer with Bookmark?
New government data shows that attainment fell further for poorer pupils this year which has widened the attainment to the largest it has been in 10 years.
As a Bookmark volunteer, you’ll help to bridge this gap. You’ll:
- Help children who struggle with their reading gain essential skills at a crucial age. This will prepare them to move up the school, ready to tackle new challenges without falling further behind. Three quarters of our volunteers noticed their reader become more confident with their reading.
- Make learning to read fun by bringing your own personality into the sessions and getting to know your reader’s interests. It’s amazing when you introduce a book, comic or poem for the first time that they love! 90% of teachers said that pupils enjoy reading more after our programme.
- Give a child one-to-one attention and be a role model. Teachers have told us that children really benefit from this dedicated time and found it boosted their self-esteem and confidence as well as their reading. You can read more about this in our Impact Report.
Helping a child with their reading is also really fun and rewarding. Over 60% of our volunteers said their own wellbeing had improved because of volunteering with Bookmark.
Is volunteering with Bookmark right for me?
Our volunteers are all ages and from all walks of life. At Bookmark we aim to make volunteering accessible to as many people as possible, so we can help more children.
- Are you over 18 and currently living in the UK?
- Are you passionate about literacy and its importance?
- Are you able to show enthusiasm, encouragement, empathy and patience?
- Can you commit to two 30-minute sessions a week, for six consecutive weeks?
- Are you willing to complete at least 3 six-week programmes a year?
- Can you provide two references for your application (for safeguarding reasons)?
- Do you have access to a PC, laptop or Chromebook with a webcam and internet connection (iPads, phones and/or tablets are not compatible), and do you feel relatively comfortable using technology?
- If NO, then you can still apply to be to volunteer on our face-to-face programmes in certain locations.

IHF Overview
The International Humanity Foundation (IHF) is a 501 c3 International Non- profit, founded in
2001. Our two-fold mission is (1) to Educate marginalized children—activating their highest
potential and nurturing healthy, loving communities around them. The happiness of our worlds
children rises above all political and religious differences; And equates to the quality of our
worlds happiness tomorrow. — (2) to Educate global citizens through communication and real
life experiences, (online and in person), about the realities of marginalized communities; while
teaching practical skills in aiding needed efforts, thus giving voice to the voiceless.
For over twenty years, IHF has offered children and adults (from young through retirement)
venues for learning and safely practicing leadership skills.
IHF is a unique organization. It believes in absolute transparency and functions almost
entirely through the efforts of its hundreds of unpaid volunteers from all over the world. Our
volunteers give their time, skills, energy, and love, working toward a better world for all, one
child, one human, at a time. We believe caring, quiet growth produces deep healthy roots.
Every community across the UK deserves equitable access to trees and the benefits they bring; from reducing air and noise pollution, alleviating stress and anxiety, making our neighbourhoods more attractive places to live and work, and boosting local ecosystems. However, while some urban areas enjoy abundant greenery and tree cover, others lack these essential natural assets. Our new Tree Equity Score tool, developed in partnership with American Forests, has been developed to help us understand where disparities in urban tree cover lie.
Now we need your help to collect data from remote urban areas across Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland to complete our map of tree equity across the UK. Between February – May 2024, we need your help to complete over 500 tree canopy cover assessments. Do as many or as few as you like, pick any available location from our list, and complete the assessment at a time that suits you - they only take around 1.5 hours to complete. Send us your findings by the end of this project and we will add them to our database. No specialist technical knowledge is needed and guidance is provided.
This is a 'Drop-in-Days' volunteering opportunity for people that lead busy lives, or that just want to volunteer ad-hoc or for a one-off event or project. Registering to take part in this project will provide you with access to our volunteer news and we will let you know about other volunteering opportunities in your area for up to to 12 months after the initial event. You can opt out anytime.

Keeping in regular contact with our members to check on their wellbeing is one of our key services.
Our Wellbeing Volunteers contact a range of different members every week to make a friendly 'check in' call and have a chat. During these calls, you'll provide the opportunity for our members to talk, offer friendly support and make them aware of the Deafblind UK services available to them.
Whatever the conversation you’ll be making a positive difference!
This is a home based role so you don't need to be 'local' and you don’t need experience to become one of our Wellbeing Volunteers. The majority of our members communicate with clear speech so no specialised skills or knowledge is required. You just need to be comfortable chatting over the phone and be able to commit to a regular weekly time slot to make calls to our members. Some knowledge or experience of sight and or hearing loss would be an advantage in this particular role and confidence in speaking with people of all ages and backgrounds.
We provide full training and ongoing support in this role and ask for a minimum commitment of three months.
We require you to have Wifi and access to a PC, tablet or mobile device. This is to allow you to complete training, have access to the Deafblind UK phone system and to submit online contact logs.
Volunteering with our charity is special because you get to hear first-hand the difference you make to people’s lives. Click on 'apply' and make a difference today!
