In this role you’ll be representing Shelter at local events and functions, speaking about our work and encouraging more people to support our movement for change. You’ll also promote our local Shelter services and our campaigning work to tackle the root causes of the housing emergency.
Location: London (various)
Suggested contribution: Ideally at least once month, but it’s up to you.

Main activities may include:
· Delivering talks to local community groups, schools and faith groups about the work of Shelter and the ways in which your audience could help us achieve our goals.
· Raising awareness of Shelter and our work through talking to friends, family and on social media
· Attending cheque presentations on behalf of Shelter to thank people and say a few words about how the money raised could be used to tackle homelessness
· Supporting our campaigns to tackle the root cause of the housing emergency by encouraging people to sign petitions and spreading the word in your community
This role fights the housing emergency by raising funds that enable Shelter to provide advice and support and campaigning for change. The events you’ll be attending are also great for raising awareness of the housing emergency and how people can get involved to help tackle it.

Overview of the Branch Trustee - HR & Employee Relations
As a HR & Employee Relations expert you would be supporting the branch by helping them maintain and develop staff throughout the organisation. You would play a key role in advising Trustees on the long-term and strategic direction of human resources and contributing towards policy setting.
As a minimum, trustees would normally be expected to attend a monthly committee meeting lasting some 2 to 3 hours. However, the commitment may vary depending on whether the trustee takes on additional duties.

The London South East Branch is one of the branches of RSPCA, but we are also a separately registered charity looking after animals in our local area. The London South East Branch has two retail shops (Sydenham Road and Norwood Road) and supports the work of the Inspectorate through rehoming of animals within the branch area.
Primary responsibilities of the Branch Trustee – HR & Employee Relations
- Advise Trustees on the long-term vision and strategic direction for investment in human resources.
- Support the Branch grow, maintain, and develop staff throughout the organisation.
- Contribute to HR policy setting, strategic direction, goal and target setting, and evaluate performance against targets, budgets, plans and charitable objectives.
- Ensure that HR activities and interventions are linked to the branches charitable objectives and complement the company culture.
- Advise on and help improve management of HR.
- Ensure the Board of Trustees properly remunerates staff, reviewing and rewarding performance and development opportunities.
- To work with the Branch Manager to review current HR management arrangements and provide guidance on HR strategy and short and long-term direction.
- Receive progress reports on HR and any recurring staffing issues.
Core Branch Trustee responsibilities
- Appreciate and support the aims and policies of the RSPCA.
- Work in conjunction with fellow trustees and branch officers and jointly act in making decisions for the best interest of the branch and the RSPCA.
- Work with national RSPCA staff to ensure that the branch meets all minimum animal welfare standards (MAWS).
- In conjunction with your fellow trustees and Branch Partnership Manager write, adopt, monitor, and review a development plan setting out the short and long term aims of your branch.
- Actively participate in branch committee meetings and to attend the branch annual general meeting and regional conference.
- Be aware of the outcome of regional board meetings and support regional initiatives.
- Actively promote and advertise the society in an ongoing programme to recruit new branch trustees and volunteers and welcome new members.
- In conjunction with your fellow trustees, ensure the proper management and control of all activities and decisions relating to any premises held or staff employed by the branch if applicable.

About Us
My Black Dog is a charity that offers anonymous, peer to peer mental health support through our web-chat service. We are committed to making a positive impact on mental health in the UK as we tackle an epidemic that millions of people face.
We were founded on the motto "talk to someone who gets it". We want to connect people who share lived experiences to provide an empathetic, non-judgmental space where everybody understands how it feels to experience mental health struggles.
Position Overview
Our web-chat service is run by our Volunteer Pack, each of whom have their own lived experience of mental health challenges. In addition, each shift has a 'Leader' and a 'Mentor'. These are Volunteers who carry out specific roles during the shift and, together, ensure its success:
- Leaders - Managers of the shift. There to ensure the shift runs as it should. They support and guide Volunteers through chats and follow safeguarding processes when an alert is raised. They escalate safeguarding alerts to the shift's Designated Safeguarding Lead (a trained professional). They also complete a 'Shift Handover' document once the shift is completed.
- Mentors - There to support and guide Volunteers through chats. Will take over from the Leader if there are safeguarding issues that need the Leader's attention and/or if the Leader needs a break.
As My Black Dog looks to expand our opening hours, we are looking to recruit additional Leaders and Mentors who can run shifts and cover additional shifts as necessary. We are looking to fill the following positions and shifts:

Leaders and Mentors will be assigned a shift based on your availability and preference. The expectation is that Leaders and Mentors will form a ‘pair’ and, together, will do one shift at the same time each week. This is to provide stability, predictability and to encourage community-building between Volunteers. Shifts are 2-3 hours long. We may ask you to cover another shift when we are short, but you will never do more than 6 hours per week.
Training will be provided and you will be supported on shift by a Designated Safeguarding Lead, who will manage all safeguarding issues.
The work you will do as Leaders and Mentors will ensure we provide the best possible service to our Guests. You will also be helping our Volunteer Pack to do what we do best: helping those in need by speaking to someone who 'gets it'.
Who We Are Looking For
We are looking for people who have experienced their own journey with mental health and are in a strong position to support others. We ask that our Leaders and Mentors:

- Have experienced mental health issues in order to relate to those seeking help

- Can remain calm and focused during busy times and when safeguarding alerts are raised

Role Responsibilities
- Supervise and support Volunteers whilst on shift with general enquiries, positive feedback and signposting.
- Assist with general volunteering enquiries whilst on shift. Provide time for guidance, instruction and de-briefing for Volunteers if required.
- Follow Leaders & Mentors processes including unexpected absence reporting, Volunteer check-in and check-out, and completing Shift Handovers.
- Monitor web-chat conversations and ensure all chats are tagged.
- Maintain ability to listen, remain calm and provide intervention if necessary.
- Be able to have difficult and often complex conversations about mental health, including Guests experiencing crisis and first-stage intervention support.
- If a Leader, work alongside the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) when safeguarding risks are identified and, if a Mentor, take over responsibility for shifts when Leader and DSL have to address a safeguarding crisis.
- Exercise discretion in handling confidential situations and information, conveying sensitive information in a timely manner to necessary individuals.
- Provide written follow up of shifts via handover, ensuring all necessary information is handed over at the end of the shift.
- Adhere to all standards, policies and procedures of My Black Dog.

This is a remote, volunteer position with the option to attend our office, located in Hackney, London, for those who prefer occasional in-person meetings. In this role, you will be responsible for developing and overseeing the HR strategy, policies, and processes that support our staff and volunteers, ensuring that Children With Voices remains a supportive and inclusive workplace.
The ideal candidate will bring substantial HR experience, excellent leadership abilities, and a genuine passion for making a positive impact on the lives of children. You will work closely with the senior management team, providing strategic HR guidance and supporting the growth of the organisation.
Key Responsibilities

Strategic HR Leadership

Develop and implement HR strategies that align with Children With Voices’ mission and values.

Advise the CEO and senior management team on HR-related issues, ensuring the HR function supports the organisation’s objectives.

Cultivate a positive, inclusive, and supportive workplace culture in line with the organisation’s ethos.

Recruitment and Onboarding

Oversee and lead the recruitment process, ensuring the organisation attracts and retains talented individuals who are passionate about our cause.

Manage onboarding procedures for new staff and volunteers to ensure a smooth integration into the organisation.

Employee Relations and Compliance

Provide expert advice on employee relations matters, ensuring fairness and compliance with UK employment law.

Offer guidance on disciplinary and grievance procedures and ensure that these processes are conducted fairly and in accordance with best practice.

Develop, implement, and maintain HR policies and procedures to ensure consistency and fairness across the organisation.

Training and Development

Identify opportunities for training and development that will enhance the skills of both staff and volunteers.

Promote continuous professional development and support leadership initiatives.

Ensure that staff and volunteers have access to the necessary tools and resources to succeed in their roles.

Wellbeing and Staff Engagement

Lead initiatives to promote the wellbeing and mental health of all staff and volunteers.

Develop and implement staff engagement programmes to foster a motivated, satisfied, and high-performing workforce.

HR Operations and Administration

Oversee the day-to-day HR administration, including maintaining accurate records, supporting payroll processing (where relevant), and ensuring that employee benefits are effectively managed.

Develop HR reports and provide insights to support decision-making.

Ensure all HR activities are managed efficiently and with the highest level of confidentiality.

Key Requirements

Experience:
-
Proven experience in HR management, with a strong understanding of employment law and best practices.

Experience in managing employee relations, performance management, recruitment, and organisational development.

Experience working with senior teams to implement HR strategies.

Skills:

Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively and provide strategic guidance.

High organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a remote working environment.

Sound knowledge of HR software and systems for managing HR functions.

Ability to work independently and remotely, with occasional in-person meetings as required.

Qualifications:

CIPD Level 7 or equivalent HR qualification is desirable, but not essential.

- Safeguarding, offering support to the chair and safeguarding leads with the management of safeguarding cases and keeping up to date with best practice
- Legal and Governance, including strategic planning and understanding of the wider political Greater Manchester landscape
- Human resources and personnel management, including a knowledge of employment legislation
- Financial management, planning and budgeting
- Public Relations, Marketing and fundraising, including awareness raising and campaigning through social media
- Capacity building and training, especially for volunteers
- Women’s health and mental health, outreach and partnership work with local services
TRC was set up in 2010 to provide a free, confidential and non-judgemental specialist support service run by women for women and girls who have experienced any form of rape, sexual abuse or sexual violence at any time in their lives. We are a feminist organisation and we actively challenge the values, beliefs and behaviours that contribute to women’s
oppression. Our mission is to raise awareness about sexual violence through providing training, guidance and information and working in partnership with local service providers and communities to promote the values of TRC.
