Volunteering volunteer roles

Climate and nature are urgent, motivating issues, so we attract great volunteers. We want to fulfil our potential by making sure we get the best out of our fantastic people and all the future ones we attract by keeping them happy and active. That is the role.

What will you be doing?

EcoCounts is a group of volunteers working together to embody EcoCore’s approach to the climate crisis. EcoCore covers a lot of ground because the climate and biodiversity crisis is so all-encompassing, which means we have a lot of varied and different volunteer tasks available, ranging from carbon footprint data collection, setting up sub-teams of friends or colleagues or doing social media or running workshops. 

Your responsibilities would be to create volunteer tasks from our work streams, which would include things like: 

• creating a role description for each volunteer task to give a good outline of everything required and expected

• keeping track of what volunteers are active on

• encouraging and inspiring volunteers to deliver on commitments

• creating an incentives or rewards framework for volunteers, potentially working with supporting businesses to agree on gift vouchers, tokens etc

• managing a small budget

• building up a social network with events, collaborations and other inputs

• using our social media accounts to advertise, to celebrate achievements etc

• help other directors, trustees & secretary keep reporting, stats, and feedback on activities up-to-date

Goals

1. Our 2025 target is 100 people doing their carbon footprints

2. We’re looking for 20 coordinators

3. We have about a dozen volunteering roles to fill beyond the two above

What are we looking for?

1. You should be a people-person with experience of managing people. You should be happy to put in the time and effort communicating with the volunteers both all-together and individually in a way that gets the best results from them.

2. Personal change is only one of the five ways that we can change society - we don't focus on personal change alone, we want to change our community, our local businesses and our local government.

3. You should check out our manifesto on the About page to make sure you agree with the ways we advocate for the way forward in the climate crisis – are you happy what we suggest is one of the best approaches?

What difference will you make?

Society has got itself into a dangerous situation with the climate crisis and EcoCounts aims to create a way out. We need all sorts of different people, not just climate nerds and sustainability fanatics, although of course that doesn't hurt. The person we need right now is someone who knows what people need to keep them happy and effective as a volunteer for us.

Being a volunteer-based organisation at this stage still, that might make the volunteer chief of staff the most important person we have. Of course we all consider each other equal. Being small and dynamic means EcoCounts can offer the flexibility for you to do an excellent and fulfilling job.

Rewards

We are seeking a reliable individual (or individuals to share the role) to assist us in supporting our teams of volunteers who work across our three projects: FareShare Greater Manchester, EMERGE Recycling and Touch Wood, as well as our parent charity, EMERGE 3Rs.

With your organisational skills, you’ll assist the Volunteer Management Team in the administration of our volunteer programmes and help us with the day-to-day operation of the office.
This position presents an excellent opportunity to gain or refresh valuable transferable skills that can be used across a wide range of working roles in future. 

This role is shared between several volunteers; each covering different shifts, so we have flexibility in accommodating what hours you are able to offer us.

ABOUT EMERGE

We operate three initiatives:

* FareShare Great Manchester - the regional hub of national charity FareShare UK, which redistributes overstocked food to community initiatives and food banks, diverting it from polluting landfill

* Touch Wood - our reclaimed wood workshop, which takes wood destined for landfill or incinerators and prepares it for resale or upcycles it into crafted items

* EMERGE Recycling - a pioneering recycling social enterprise

The volunteer administration support role is one of the broadest ranging opportunities we have on offer; being a blend of many working practices, from general administration to assisting with recruitment. You will be working with a diverse range of individuals, from many different types of backgrounds and circumstances, so a friendly attitude and an interest in helping people are advantageous traits for applicants.

Typical tasks include:

* Answering and redirecting phone calls and greeting visitors

* Data entry

* Assisting with monitoring information

* Assisting with preparation of induction sessions

* Undertaking routine tasks, e.g. photocopying, laminating

* Preparing information packs

* Maintaining supplies of flyers and forms used for volunteer recruitment

REQUIREMENTS:

Organised and reliable

Good communication skills: comfortable speaking in person and on the phone in a polite, clear and friendly manner

Strong computer skills; particularly familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook

Accuracy and attention to detail

Good standard of personal presentation

GETTING TO US

We are just a 15 minute bus ride from Manchester Piccadilly, with our new base, Maynard House, located on new Smithfield Market, which is only a few yards off a main arterial route into the city, Ashton Old Road. 

Public Transport

The market site can be easily reached by a number of bus services, with the 219 being the most frequent.

If travelling to us by car, please be aware that many satnav systems wrongly direct drivers to the rear of the market site. Instead, please enter by the main gate on Whitworth Street East (off Ashton Old Road). There is plenty of free parking on site.

There is a bus stop immediately opposite the main entrance to the market.

Greenwich + Docklands International Festival (GDIF) is London's leading festival of free outdoor theatre and performing arts. It is supported by a team of 150 volunteers, and is proud to be the first festival in the UK to be awarded Platinum level in Attitude is Everything's Live Events Access Charter.

The festival runs from 22 August - 6 September 2025.

GDIF is seeking enthusiastic volunteers to play an essential role in the festival’s delivery. Whether it's providing a friendly face to visitors, being a team leader, or championing access in the arts, the experience will be yours to make your own.

Volunteer requirements  

Anyone aged 18 or over. 

Friendly and reliable people, with an interest in art. 

Those that can give 15 hours of their time (3 approx. 4 hour shifts plus training), or want to commit to more!

Volunteer responsibilities  

Whether this is your first-time volunteering anywhere or you’re looking to add leadership or festival access support experience to your CV, we have the role for you!

General festival volunteer: The smiling face of the festival! Helping out in a Front of House capacity, ensuring that audience members have a wonderful experience at GDIF. Duties involve collecting audience feedback, helping audiences find their way around and collecting donations to support the festival.

Team Leader: Would you like to help coordinate a team? We are looking for confident people to help coordinate volunteer teams at this year’s festival. Team leaders will be chosen before the festival and given additional training.

Access Champion: Passionate about accessibility? We put provision in each year to make the festival as accessible as possible to our D/deaf and disabled audiences. In this role you would help broaden access to art by supporting the access team across our events. Access champions will be chosen before the festival and given additional training. 

Health appointments are crucial for staying well, but we know that getting there, navigating the journey, or remembering everything said during an appointment can be stressful or overwhelming, especially alone.

Our volunteers accompany beneficiaries – on foot, or by bus, taxi or patient transport – and provide support, connection and care, often during the appointment itself.

We’re looking for compassionate and committed people to join our team and help older people maintain their wellbeing. This is a rewarding, flexible role suitable for people who cannot make regular weekly commitments.

This role is really flexible! You could choose to volunteer at one event for a couple of hours or attend multiple fundraising events.

We’ll keep you up to date with upcoming local events where volunteers are needed. You’ll then be able to choose which events you’d like to volunteer at and how many hours you’d like to give. However much time you can give, your contribution will help raise much needed funds to continue the work of Cats Protection.

Are you a dedicated and organised person, passionate about helping others? Join our night-time party and lots of other Volunteers at The MoonWalk Scotland on Saturday 6th September 2025 from Holyrood Park, Edinburgh! Bring your energy and enthusiasm and help us make a difference, by supporting the thousands of Walkers get through the night and raise millions of funds for cancer prevention and research, and for the emotional and physical care of those living with cancer.

We need your help now more than ever…This is going to be a super special year, as it will be our last MoonWalk in Edinburgh before the MoonWalk goes on tour to a new city.

We recruit hundreds of Volunteers to make The MoonWalk a safe and enjoyable event; looking after our Walkers as they take to the streets of Edinburgh overnight, and above all giving them the encouragement they need to complete their epic challenge.

Join in the party atmosphere in Dynamic Earth on Saturday Evening, with help needed from around 6 PM through till Midnight. A busy period when our Walkers and Volunteers arrive en masse, from litter picking, to registering baggage, to handing out Volunteer uniforms or help managing the queues of excited Walkers, there is so much to get involved in!

The Night-Time is where the challenge really gets going for our amazing Walkers. If you like the nightlife, marshalling, or giving out water whilst surrounded by Edinburgh’s famous landmarks, this could be for you! Start times vary between 8 PM and Midnight, depending on your role, and last on average 8 hours. We can also offer site-based roles at MoonWalk Arena throughout the night. Early finishes can of course be requested.

Finally, the early morning team take the helm on Sunday Morning, starting between 5–6 AM until Midday. Watching the sunrise against an Edinburgh skyline is quite a sight to see! This truly is the most testing time for our Walkers… whether you join the route or MoonWalk Arena teams… your kind and motivating words could be all that is needed to get someone across that finish line!

On the night you will be provided with training, a t-shirt, cap and free light refreshments. All roles will develop teamwork and confidence, no matter what you do on the night… so why not bring your friends and family along to share this unique experience!

Support the work of St John Ambulance in your community by volunteering as a Community Volunteer, an exciting new role which is designed to revamp how volunteering looks in the modern world; flexible, innovative and is open for all.

We need people who have a passion for helping others, care about their communities and want to make a difference, supporting them to become safe and more resilient. Community Volunteers can choose from a wide selection of activities – including fundraising, talks and demonstrations, supporting at events, volunteer welfare, social media and administration support.

Through supporting the growth of community partnerships, you will bring people along to our cause, growing our membership and fundraising base and spreading the message that First Aid Saves Lives.

Through volunteering as a Community Volunteer, you’ll get a huge sense of satisfaction and pride delivering an essential service. It’s great for you, great for your community and great for our nation, and it requires only a small commitment of your time.

Once we have completed your selection and screening for this role, we will provide you with an induction, as well as invite you to any necessary training sessions. We will also provide you with a supportive environment while you are volunteering with us. Information about our volunteer roles are included in the role descriptions.
