We are excited to be recruiting a part-time Finance & Operations Officer.
The Foundation for Common Land provides a single voice to co-ordinate knowledge and share learning across Common Land. We work with commoners’ associations and federations, owners of common land and farming bodies as well as environmental NGOs, and government bodies such as the Defra group, including the Rural Payments Agency and Natural England.
This role is central to the organisation’s success, a lynch pin for the team, you will work closely with our Operations Director to support our small but mighty team to meet our charitable objectives. This is a varied role covering multiple operational areas including payroll coordination, organisational operations, financial administration, and project support. Given the versatile nature of the responsibilities and the small team size, candidates will need to demonstrate flexibility, adaptability, and the ability to take ownership while working independently.

Contract type: Permanent
Contractual hours: 18.75 per week (0.5), flexi-time to be agreed with line manager
Location: Hybrid role. It is expected that you would work from our central Ambleside office a min of two days a week.
Salary: £27,000 - £37,000 FTE, dependent on experience

We are seeking a highly efficient, collaborative professional with a keen eye for detail to work closely with the CEO in a supporting role. This role will be critical to the functioning and effective governance of the organisation, providing a broad range of support as required. Tasks will be varied and will involve both supporting our frontline functions and assisting with back-office admin, ranging from providing a compassionate response to people dropping into our office for support or dealing with telephone queries from vulnerable migrants, to processing invoices and assisting in the drafting of fundraising applications.
This is a new post to support efficient administration at HMC, ensuring the smooth running of HMC’s office and providing essential support to the CEO.
We are a busy team supporting a large number of vulnerable people and working hard to deliver impactful services in a challenging external environment. In a small team with limited resources, we all wear multiple hats and this will be a varied and busy role juggling tasks across multiple areas.
This role offers a rewarding opportunity for a highly organised person who is as comfortable delivering public-facing services as they are working alone in deep focus to complete an administrative task or write a report. The ideal candidate is confident speaking to and supporting others, and enjoys administrative tasks, creating and maintaining structure and working in a supportive capacity.

The Fellowship and Administration Officer is the main point of contact for Society Fellows, applicants and general enquiries. They administer and update records in the Society’s CRM database and undertake financial and general office administration. They also support the delivery of the Society’s annual programme of in-person, online and hybrid events.
Main Responsibilities
- Acts as the main point of contact for Society Fellows, prospective Fellows and general enquiries by telephone, email, letters and in person
- Assists with application, Fellowship and subscription queries and Fellowship applications and sends welcome packs to new Fellows
- Administers and updates database records and provides reports from the database (for example, mailing lists for sending biannual newsletters and other printed items to Fellows)
- Assists the Finance Manager with financial administration relating to Fellowship, including standing orders, credit notes, direct debits and Gift Aid, renewals and various mailings
- Assists Fellows with website login access and event bookings
- Monitors the Society’s main email inboxes, responding to queries or forwarding to other colleagues as appropriate
- Produces the monthly Fellows e-newsletter and additional e-mailings as required
- Undertakes general office administration, including meeting room bookings, booking accommodation for Trustees, printing meeting papers and mailings
- Supports with the operational delivery of Society events, including Eventbrite and survey-related tasks for Fellows-only events, liaising with speakers, arranging travel and accommodation, uploading recordings of Fellows-only events to YouTube, and attending and helping at events as required
- Contributes to internal quarterly reports
- Processes and posts merchandise orders
