Shelter Bristol operates a dynamic city centre hub offering a range of holistic advice and support services to a diverse range of clients, including legal advice and representation and housing related support services. We specialise in housing, welfare benefits and debt.
About the role
This post is designed to be flexible to reflect the needs of the service. Whilst the post will have a key focus, the role of ASG worker is designed to have flexibility to provide a mix of both advice and support. It may cover a range of activities from providing specialist housing, welfare benefits or debt advice to working closely with clients to support them in finding and retaining their accommodation; the balance of these elements will depend on the need in the local area. There may also be a requirement to provide briefings and updates to housing providers.
About you
To succeed, you’ll need relevant experience gained working within housing , debt or welfare benefit advice and within a safeguarding framework working with vulnerable people or those with multiple and complex needs. We’ll also be looking for a proven ability to work effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders, both statutory and non-statutory. Proficiency using a range of IT tools to carry out your work, including case management systems, Microsoft Office applications, internet and email etc. is important too, with the ability to type preferred. Proactive, results-driven and sensitive to the needs of others, work well within a team and aren’t afraid to challenge the status quo and introduce new ideas, methods and processes if appropriate.

Your challenge? To do everything you can to help the individuals we work with to source appropriate work experience placements with local organisations/employers. Day to day, you’ll offer support, careers advice and guidance, helping people to set their own recovery and employment focused goals and provide training in personal and skills development such as CV preparation, interview techniques etc. You’ll also be responsible for establishing and maintaining positive links with partner organisations, local employers and Mental Health teams and have the initiative to develop and promote the service. Additionally, you will have responsibility for maintaining efficient admin systems to ensure referrals, assessments and reviews are completed in a timely manner.
As well as a good understanding of mental health problems and the issues and barriers this can create for our clients, you’ll need excellent motivational, presentation and listening skills and a willingness to travel in the local area and to work outside of office hours as required.
The post holder must be willing to work remotely and travel within the Bath and East Somerset area therefore access to their own vehicle and a clean driving licence is essential. Business mileage will be compensated.

- A minimum of two NGB qualifications from: Summer Mountain Leader/Walking Group Leader assessed – Rock climbing Instructor/Climbing Wall instructor – Paddle Sport Leader or Instructor – MIA S Level 2 or British cycling Level 2.
- Skills or training evidence in a third adventurous/outdoor activity
- First Aid qualification with outdoor focus and relevant to other qualifications (BASP, REC, etc)
- D1 driving license.
