At the Public Interest News Foundation (PINF), we want everyone in the UK to benefit from public interest news that speaks to them, for them and with them. We work with print and digital news providers of all shapes and sizes, focusing in particular on independent providers with turnover below £2m. These innovative social enterprises are developing new models of journalism, but they face great challenges.
Since we started work in March 2020, we have provided independent news providers with funding and leadership development opportunities, backed up by original research. Now, we want to strengthen the support for our mission among policymakers in the UK Government and devolved administrations.
As Campaigns Manager, you will have lead responsibility for the success of the ‘News for All’ campaign, which aims to promote the value of independent public interest news to policymakers and stakeholders. You will also be responsible for coordinating the Public Interest News Network, through which we work with a range of our partner organisations. And you will make sure that our core communications are clear and compelling.
We are a small, dedicated team with big ambitions. We work remotely from home or in co-working spaces, with get-togethers at least once a month. We all contribute to PINF’s evolving strategy, and we support and stretch each other to do our best work.
We are committed to building a diverse team who can bring their experiences from work and home into this role. Therefore, we actively encourage applications from Black, Asian or minoritised groups, LGBTQ+ people and people with disabilities.
You will have the following skills and attributes:
- Advocacy. You will be able to develop and deliver an effective campaign, drawing on your excellent knowledge and understanding of the UK’s political framework to build effective working relationships with Ministers, MPs and Peers, members of the devolved administrations and civil servants.
- Communications. You will be able to use your outstanding written and verbal communication skills, including copy-writing and public speaking, to draft and deliver output including speeches, consultation responses, blog posts and comment pieces.
- Media. You will be able to engage effectively with print, digital and broadcast journalists, and manage PINF’s social media channels.
- Policy. You will be able to distil complex policy issues into clear and compelling positions by drawing on internal and external research. You do not have to be a sector specialist when you start the role, but you should be able to build your knowledge and understanding rapidly.
- Partnerships. You will be able to build a coalition of organisations and individuals, drawing on your skill for effective working relationships and your instinct for collaboration to engage and empower people from all backgrounds and experiences.
- Administration. You will be able to stay on top of your workload by using relevant software (including Microsoft Office, e-campaigning tools and content management systems), keeping accurate and up-to-date records, and prioritising between competing tasks.
In your first 12 months as Campaigns Manager, you will:
- Lead on the successful delivery of the ‘News for All’ campaign, through which we are working in partnership with a range of organisations and individuals to ensure that policymakers support independent news providers through the forthcoming Digital Competition Bill and other areas of public policy.
- Co-ordinate the Public Interest News Network, through which we are developing our relationships with our partner organisations, to ensure that we contribute as effectively and efficiently as possible towards our shared aims.
- Build PINF’s profile and reputation with key audience groups, including not only policymakers, but also independent news providers, philanthropists and big tech companies, through a running programme of media and social media communications.
Benefits
We are a small and friendly team of dedicated people who work remotely with a high degree of responsibility and autonomy. We meet at least once a month in London, and we can cover reasonable travel costs for employees who are based outside London to attend these meetings. We can also pay for employees to use co-working spaces in their local area if they prefer not to work from home. We are happy for employees to manage their own time, so long as they are available to take calls and meetings and respond to emails within normal office hours (9.30am-5.30pm, Monday-Friday). The Campaigns Manager will be entitled to 28 days paid leave, including bank holidays.
At PINF, we are committed to promoting a diverse and inclusive organisation. We offer flexible working arrangements to support staff from different backgrounds, and we particularly encourage applications from people whose backgrounds are under-represented in the news media.
We intend to appoint the Campaigns Manager on a twelve-month full-time contract (40 hours per week with an hour each day for lunch). With further funding, we hope to develop this into a permanent role, so, for the right candidate, this could be the start of a long-term involvement with the Public Interest News Foundation. Permanent employees receive matching pension contributions of 5% and can participate in our salary sacrifice scheme to lease an electric car.

Background:
Founded in 2011, Kaleidoscope Trust works to uphold the human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT+) people in countries around the world where they are discriminated against or marginalised due to their sexual orientation, gender identity and/or gender expression. We work with British and international institutions and partners to support the work of LGBT+ activists to bring about positive legislative, policy and social change for LGBT+ people everywhere. We do this principally through our research- and evidence-based advocacy and our high-impact programmes. A significant result of our work was our contribution to influencing former Prime Minister Theresa May to express her deep regret for the legacy of discrimination and violence that colonial-era legislation continues to inflict on people across the Commonwealth at the 2018 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).
Kaleidoscope Trust helped found the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Global LGBT+ Rights, in 2015. We are also a founding member and hosts the Secretariat of The Commonwealth Equality Network (TCEN), the first civil society network to sustainably advocate on behalf of LGBT+ people in the Commonwealth. Since its foundation in 2013, TCEN has actively participated in Commonwealth spaces to raise the profile and mainstream the discussion of LGBT+ people and their rights and concerns, and to engage with national-level decision-makers and policymakers on these topics. The network currently comprises over 65 member organisations representing 47 Commonwealth countries drawn from all regions, and was accredited to the Commonwealth in 2017.

- Build and maintain relationships with government officials, and the wider policy community across multiple countries, strategically deploying senior organisational staff or representing Kaleidoscope Trust in external meetings and civil society forums as directed.
- Draft insightful and compelling policy submissions, briefings and papers.
- Identify and share insights into relevant emerging international political and policy trends helping to anticipate issues, risks and opportunities.
- Fulfil the key responsibilities of the job role in a professional manner while adapting to often changing circumstances and re-prioritising accordingly.

Overview and Summary:
We are seeking to appoint a part-time Campaign Officer (0.8 FTE) on a 12-month contract – a crucial role for our more than 60-strong coalition during a vital period for our work.
We’re in the middle of a steadily building campaign that spans political advocacy, public communications and engagement with businesses, targeted towards ensuring the introduction of what our coalition calls a UK ‘Business, Human Rights and Environment Act’. This role will play a central role in shaping and driving forward the campaign, working alongside our civil society group partners to do so.
We are a broad coalition, including NGOs, trade unions and law firms, and spanning a range of political and thematic priorities, spanning workers’ rights and modern slavery, to climate and the environment, global justice and the rights of women and girls, children and indigenous peoples. But what brings us together is a shared commitment to improving corporate accountability for human rights abuses and environmental destruction: in line with this, collaborative work for change alongside our partners is at the heart of all we do.
While it’s fundamental that you have a minimum of two years’ experience of working in campaigns/the not-for-profit sector, and we want you to be a skilled writer, we’re keen to hear from candidates with different skill sets. If you’d like to have a chat about the role ahead of applying, please do feel free to get in touch with.
Please note, applicants must hold the right to work in the UK to be considered for this role.
CJC is an equal opportunities employer committed to refining anti-oppressive practises in its work. We particularly welcome applications from black and minority ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in the business and human rights sector.
What we’re looking for
First and foremost, we’re looking for someone who is highly motivated and has a real commitment to campaign for change on corporate accountability for human rights abuses. You’ll be enthusiastic and full of ideas, able to juggle multiple deadlines and tasks, while being ready to show initiative and take ownership of your area of work.
You don’t need to be a policy expert on our issues, but you’ll need to have the ability to rapidly gain an understanding of what we work on and why. And you’ll need to be a confident and skilled writer who’s equally happy writing tweets, drafting scripts for social media videos and writing press releases and comment/analysis for media outlets.
Facilitating joint work alongside our coalition partners is fundamental to everything we do, so we’re looking for someone who already has experience of working in the not-for-profit sector - whether in the UK charity sector or elsewhere - and who will be at ease regularly communicating with other organisations and facilitating meetings which can have multiple organisations in attendance.
Our work spans engagement with politicians, the public, journalists, academics, lawyers and businesses. So you’ll need to be adaptable and able to work with such a wide variety of stakeholders.
You will be the main point of contact for our partner organisations working on this campaign, so it’s crucial that you’re comfortable with and enjoy collaborative work with others. We need someone who recognises and understands the value of civil society groups working together effectively, and relishes the opportunity of being a key enabler of such coalition work.
This is a crucial, very busy, outward-facing role in a small organisation seeking to make big changes. The role offers a huge opportunity to play a key role in a growing campaign with the potential to secure a meaningful change in UK legislation.
Please see attachment for more details.
Please send a CV and cover letter outlining your reasons for applying for the role and why you believe you are suitable for it. Please also include up to three samples of published writing you may have available to share.
Please note that we will review, shortlist and interview applicants on a rolling basis.
