Job description

Migrant Democracy Project Vision and Values
Migrant Democracy Project is building migrants’ political power in the UK. We are registering migrants to vote, campaigning for everyone to have the right to vote, and getting more migrants elected! The Electoral Organiser is essential in delivering our MPower - Political Leadership training programme, supporting first-generation migrants to stand for election, and creating
infrastructure of power for their electoral success. The MPower Programme aims to create a new generation of migrant political leaders in the UK.

We believe that our power comes from our lived experiences, community connections, and core values. We want to support migrants getting elected to create a fairer society for everyone. The Electoral Organiser will bring their political organising vision to this role by recruiting the next cohort of participants, creating a training plan for a new generation of migrant candidates to get elected, and supporting their communities’ ongoing needs. We believe our power comes from the community, so electoral organising and community organising go hand-in-hand. The Electoral Organiser will work and train our migrant candidates to become leaders and win for and with their communities.

Responsibilities

1. Delivering the MPower - Political Leadership Training Programme

  • Strategise and design the second MPower Political Leadership Programme.
  • Organise training sessions with migrant communities, considering needs of participants, suitable speakers, and employing engaging facilitation methods.
  • Review the MPower Political Leadership pilot programme and set out recommendations for the next cohort.
  • Strategically plan the geographical areas the next programme will be active in and how many participants will be in the programme.
  • Run the recruitment of the next cohort of participants by engaging with civil society organisations, social media, and other recruitment channels.
  • Schedule, plan, and organise the training sessions. This will be a mix of online and offline activities. This will include organising an in-person launch event as well as end-of-programme graduation event.
  • Maintain open and regular communication with the training cohort, including coaching participants, collecting feedback, and being the main point of contact to resolve participants’ needs.
  • Keep a record of training session attendance and participant queries.
  • Work with the Director of Operations on implementing the MPower programme budget (speaker fees, venue costs, stipends use, etc.).

2. Leading on Migrant Democracy Project’s work in the electoral space

  • One-to-one coaching and practical support for former and current MPower Political Leadership candidates on key campaigning skills such as voter registration, canvassing, media engagement, mobilisation of supporters, and more.
  • Organising voter registration drives with MPower programme participants and graduates in key locations.
  • Attending stakeholder meetings in the democracy sector related to migrant voter registration, political representation, and diversity in politics.

3. Administrative tasks

  • Attend regular progress meetings with the Executive Director.
  • Contribute to relevant funder evaluation reports linked to the role’s activities.
  • Represent Migrant Democracy Project at relevant events when required.

Qualifications

We are looking for a proactive, confident, flexible, and well-organised person with the following skills:

  • Excellent knowledge of the UK political system and the main political parties, including the candidacy processes, at least at the local level.
  • Proven experience in an electoral organiser role, either for a candidate, party, or issue.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a special focus on interpersonal skills that build up other people’s confidence and trust with the organiser and the organisation.
  • Excellent administrative and planning skills, including dealing with last-minute changes to events.
  • Knowledge of the UK immigration system and experience working with migrant communities, including campaign or support groups.
  • Experience delivering or facilitating training sessions.
  • Experience in coaching people.
  • Good social media skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of IT systems and online platforms, such as Zoom, Google Drive, Calendly, etc.

The following experiences would be helpful, although not necessary:

  • Experience of organising training sessions with migrant communities.
  • Experience producing campaign social media and media content.
  • Knowledge of languages other than English.
  • Knowledge of campaign strategies and theories of organising.

We particularly encourage applicants from people with lived experience of migration to apply for this role. Although most training sessions will be online, there will be some in-person activity in London and other areas where the cohort of programme participants will live. Ideally, this role would suit a person based in Greater London.

Recruitment process

Please apply with a 2-page CV and a 1-page cover letter on why you would like this role.

We are looking for an Electoral Organiser to start on 1 July 2024. The applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an in person interview on Thursday 20 June between 10am and 5pm in central London. There will be a practical assessment part of the interview process, sent by email in good time.
