The Finance team are a key function within the Corporate Services directorate, providing accurate and timely management information to colleagues across the organisation to support effective decision making.
We are seeking an Assistant Management Accountant to join as an integral part of the team, to work collaboratively with the Finance Officers to ensure a tight and accurate month-end close with all accounts reconciled.
The ideal candidate will bring experience of working in both accounts payable and receivable environments and be able to provide further analysis to ensure that transactions have been correctly recorded. There will be the opportunity to take responsibility for the trial balance by preparing nominal ledger journals and undertaking monthly balance sheet account reconciliations.
You should have excellent organisational skills and be able to prioritise to meet deadlines, have the ability to work collaboratively, along with excellent attention to detail and great customer service skills.
You will have experience of using computerised accounting systems along with being proficiency in Outlook, Microsoft Word, and Excel as all are essential for this role.

We currently operate across three sites, two in London (Tottenham Hale and Whitechapel) and one in central Manchester. We are looking for a Management Accountant, ideally with experience in the Education sector, who will strengthen the Finance and Data team through effective processing and analysis of the College’s finances.
The role
This is a hands-on role in a growing organisation. You will lead on day to day processing of transactions, regular reconciliations and production and analysis of monthly management accounts to support effective decision making. You will support the Finance Manager and Director of Finance in ensuring effective financial control processes are in place and followed as well as supporting financial submissions to relevant bodies and providing information for the annual accounts.
This role will suit someone who enjoys working as part of a small time and is happy to work on their own initiative.
Key responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:
Processing of income and expenditure transactions, allocation to cost centres and cost codes and processing journals in the Xero accounting system;
Undertaking regular bank reconciliations including charge and credit cards transactions;
Ensuring purchase orders are raised for expenditure and ensuring they are appropriately approved and authorised;
Working with the Finance Manager and budget holders, ensure that budgets are effectively monitored and action taken as appropriate;
Produce monthly management accounts, including P & L, Balance Sheet and cashflow and provide analysis of key variances and financial performance for reporting to the Finance Committee and Board;
Be the main point of contact for finance queries including liaison with bankers, HMRC, payroll provider and other bodies;
Train staff on using the Purchase Order system and relevant parts of the Accounting system;
Support completion and submission of relevant financial returns to the ESFA and other funders;
Support on and provide information as required for the annual statutory accounts process.
The above list is not exhaustive and may be changed by the Director of Finance and Data as required. The post holder will be expected to comply with any reasonable request to undertake work of a similar level that is not specified in the job description.
The successful candidate will have the following essential qualities:
Experience of working in finance in an education establishment or the sector;
Experience in transaction processing and bank reconciliation processes, ideally using Xero or similar;
Understanding of financial processes and controls;
Ability to analyse financial information and explain variances in written and verbal form;
Ability to manage own workload and meet deadlines;
Able and willing to use own initiative to complete tasks

Some of the responsibilities and duties:
- Assist in the preparation of the statutory financial accounts and audit of the College
- Responsible for complex monthly reconciliations and ensure timely and accurate reporting of the balance sheet
- Assist with the preparation of quarterly VAT returns for all entities and corporate taxation in compliance with the relevant tax regulations
- Assist with the review of financial policies and procedures and embed continuous improvement mindset relating to processes and controls
- Supervision and motivation of 3 Assistant Accountants to work towards various deadlines for the management and statutory accounts

This role will work alongside two other Rent Accountants and will support the Financial Controller in delivering across all areas of this role, which is a key conduit between the finance function and their external national housing management provider.

Description
The responsibilities of the Rent Accountant include:
- Assists in maintenance of rent ledger and responsible for posting rent journals to general ledger, along with servicing Rent email inbox
- Supports the Service Charge team to post annual service charge actuals and updating rent ledger for correct service charge amounts to tenants
- Ownership of Net Operating Income (NOI) P&L lines relating to rent and service charge income, posting accruals and prepayments when appropriate plus reviewing accounts to ensure high degree of posting accuracy
- Provides Financial Controller with rent receipts data for quarterly reporting to our lenders
- Completing and maintaining monthly balance sheet reconciliations
- Assists in the maintenance of Shared Ownership Direct Debit payment file to ensure correct rents captured timely from tenants, as well as maintaining and reconciling cash book entries
- Works closely with Management Accounts and Accounts Payable teams to ensure smooth running of month-end processes
Profile
The successful Rent Accountant will be:
- Part-Qualified - ideally a finalist
- Strong attention to detail to ensure a high degree of accuracy
- Experience of maintaining rent ledgers and cashbooks required
- Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
- Property sector experience preferred
- Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Excel

Reporting into the Financial Controller, you will be responsible for:
- Complete the month end processes in line with the closing calendar deadlines
- Business partner with key business stakeholder groups including leads, cost centre owners and finance stakeholders
- Support the preparation of routine management, reporting including associated variance analysis, fixed costs and commentary
- Ensure compliance to internal controls as set and governed via the group internal control framework
- Assist in explaining accounting issues and evolving accounting guidance to other areas of the business
- Provide support and assist in operational aspects of business initiatives or projects
- Ensure day to day accounting activities comply to Group accounting policies and procedures or specific regulations, laws and standards
- Support the preparation of budget and forecasts in line with agreed time lines
- Assist with quarterly/ half year reviews and audit requirements
- Identify areas for improvements and actively participate in the continuous improvements of accounting processes, financial systems and reporting
Profile
The Successful Management Accountant:
- You will have a minimum two years' experience of working in a similar role.
- Be able to demonstrate an understanding and application of relevant accounting standards.
- Have proven track record of robust forecasting of organisational cash flows.
- Must be able to demonstrate experience of working to strict timetables. We are looking for someone who is adaptable, creative and has a keenness to learn and develop professionally.
- You will have experience in interpreting and communicating financial results through reports.
- You will be confident in proactively preparing a budget with the business and offering professional challenge where appropriate.
- You will enjoy making processes efficient by default.
