Make a difference by providing company and conversation to an older person in Croydon. Our Befriending service supports older adults by alleviating loneliness and isolation, supporting independence, and increasing self-confidence, by making weekly or fortnightly visits to a client living in the borough of Croydon.

Befriender - In Person

Duties:
• Providing companionship to clients in their home, sharing a cup of tea
• Other activities mutually agreed by both the volunteer and client, such as reading together, or helping with post, and within the Befriending Programme’s guidelines
• Maintaining records of client visits and sending those to the Befriending Coordinator on a regular basis
• Accompanying client out for a walk or to the shop if they are sufficiently able
• Accompanying client to weekly activities or social clubs to support client’s
independence
• Escorting clients to GP/hospital appointments as needed
• Adherence to Age UK Croydon’s policies and procedures, including Confidentiality and Safeguarding
Skills Required:
• Good listening and communication skills
• An open-minded and non-judgemental attitude
• An understanding and awareness of issues faced by older adults
• Ability to maintain professional boundaries

Befriender - Telephone

Duties:
• Providing companionship to clients by telephone for a chat
• Maintaining records of telephone calls to clients and sending those to the Befriending
Coordinator on a regular basis

Skills Required:
• Good listening and communication skills
• An open-minded and non-judgemental attitude
• An understanding and awareness of issues faced by older adults
• Adherence to Age UK Croydon’s policies and procedures, including Confidentiality and
Safeguarding
• Ability to maintain professional boundaries

Chatterbox Befrienders offer one-to-one telephone support and will call a client once a week offering companionship and a listening ear for an individual who might otherwise go unheard. Chatterbox volunteers befriend a variety of people including carers, socially isolated individuals who are struggling with loneliness, people with ill health and those that 
have been bereaved.

- Calling your client once a week for a chat of up to 45 minutes; this is a 26 week initial commitment, at the end of which each client’s needs are reviewed

- Completing an online call log record promptly after each phone call

- Ensuring immediate contact with the Chatterbox Coordinators if you feel that the client might be a risk to themselves or others

- Liaising with the Chatterbox Coordinator on a regular basis regarding the service, as well as discussing personal learning and development needs

- Respecting service standards, appropriate boundaries and recognising the range of policies and procedures that impact on befriending vulnerable adults

Age Connects Cardiff and the Vale are reaching out to find new volunteers to help our older clients stay in contact with the outside world. Many older people remain alone at home for long periods of time, with only the TV for company. You can get out into your community and help an older person combat loneliness and isolation.

With around 90% of our income coming from our amazing supporters, we simply couldn't do what we do without them. That's why our community fundraising volunteers are at the heart of our mission - bringing people together to raise vital funds that help protect children and prevent cruelty and abuse.

What will you be doing?

Volunteering in this role will mean you become a valued member of our local community fundraising team. You will engage with the public, local organisations, and your community, and raise awareness of our vital cause. The role will involve attending events, helping us out with spreading the NSPCC's messages across the area, raising funds and just proudly representing the NSPCC and what we stand for. How regular is the volunteering?

This role is a flexible, 'as and when' volunteering opportunity with no regular time commitment required! We understand that life comes first, which is why this role can easily fit around you and your schedule. It Gets Better UK is a lived-experience-led LGBT+ youth charity, working to tackle the disproportionate mental health challenges LGBT+ young people face today, through a collection of community-sourced, lived-experience stories; educational programs; and community-building initiatives.

About the role

We are looking for a volunteer to support It Gets Better UK in securing trust and foundation funding. This role is perfect for someone who enjoys research, writing, and bringing together a compelling case for support. You’ll help us continue telling stories that inspire, uplift, and empower LGBTQ+ young people.

What you’ll do

• Research grant-making bodies, trusts, and foundations that align with our mission.
• Draft and edit funding applications with guidance from our team.
• Support with tracking deadlines and requirements for applications and reports.
• Work alongside our CEO and small team to identify new funding opportunities.
